Fun Spot America Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I wonder if we might be looking at something on a similar scale to El Toro (the GCI one). That's like an 80 foot, more or less out and back/ L shaped design for a small park. It sort of seems like a similar to what we can maybe expect from this Fun Spot project.

^I agree. I am watching this thread a little too closely I think. Fun Spot has a good idea here and I really hope GCI gives them a Great Coaster. < That was an accident at first. A good wooden coaster there would be a Huge win, really for the whole city. Something everlasting about a ride on a wooden coaster. I myself have been watching a lot of GCI POV's lately.

With the screenshot probably being pretty accurate, can anyone give a guess to length. If the lift hill ends up closer to the 100 foot mark it's gonna be pretty fast. You have to do something with all that good momentum don't you? I wonder if we will get a good twisty drop.

Yeah, you are right. I was WAY too high.

I just looked at the expansion on Google Earth and it isn't nearly as large as I was assuming. Doing a rough measurement I actually got closer to 2,500 ft. Sound better?

I see this coaster being more along the lines of a GCI version of Wooden Warrior, which considering the reviews is a very good thing. I know that concept art picture from the news is just that, concept art, but that layout looks nothing like the Big Fun version. As long as GCI is a part of this project I'm sure it will be a huge success.

It's a shame that Busch has allowed Gwazi to fall into such disrepair. When it was new, it was quite good. The two tracks debuted on Mitch's poll at 30 and 32, but have since fallen below 100. (They actually jumped up slightly this year, and that was before the new trains.) Sure, there have been many new coasters since then, but that only accounts for about 25 of those notches they lost. So, they've still dropped a relative 50 notches. But I also bet it ranks higher than it probably should because of people like me who haven't ridden it in the past 5 years or so and still rank it based on our older rides.

I wonder if Fun Spot even knew about the Dania Beach Hurricane when they were planning this. Or if it was even closed at the time they were planning this. Even if they didn't, it's probably too late to change plans now, since they've probably already contracted with GCI, who has probably already done preliminary plans for it. But even if they knew about the Hurricane, I wonder if it would fit in the small space they have. If the new coaster is going where we think it is, it doesn't look like it will actually take up much space, thanks to the L-shape design hugging the sides and corner of the land.

Ah, the things we learned from RCT!

Well, this is one more reason to try to get back to Orlando in the next few years, after a long hiatus away.

^ I believe one article said construction will begin late spring as the park still has to get final permits from city and what not. With an opening of Feb/March 2013 I'd said we'll see vertical construction come summer.

It really isn't that much land and it looks much smaller in person at least to me when I drove by the other day.

As for Gwazi - I'm really interested to see how it runs after this winter's track work is complete. Gwazi is going on nearly two-years of daily operations without major track work. I'm no expert but retracking and then still running PTCs for a year before MFs probably doesn't help.

With the Big Fun model reportedly costing just at 3 million dollars as a complete turn key project, I doubt anyone could relocate the Dania Beach Hurricane for that much.

+1

That is without question, IMO.

Kent paid $100,000 to buy a wood coaster (Starliner) -- but it ultimately cost around $5 million to relocate and refurbish it. Starliner was the final straw that sent Cypress Gardens into bankruptcy, it cost a lot more to move and rebuild than estimated (and all the debt finished them off). The Dania Beach Hurricane is a larger coaster than the Starliner, but it would need less modification (than Starliner) to meet current safety standards -- so I'd guess the cost would probably be about the same.

I think what we end up with will be better than Starliner, At least I hope so. I was really looking forward to Starliner and it just wasn't very fun for me. The only woodies I have enjoyed in Florida Were Dania Beach Hurricane and the Flying Tiger. Both of those coasters are long since gone, that's why Fun Spot is is my new best friend. An Orlando woodie is sounding great to me. I think we will end up with a smaller woodie that's a good solid ride.

Waiting to see the actual design is killing me, I can't wait to see what GCI comes up with for that space. The L-shaped out and back seems like it will hold as the over all design but I can't wait to see what they pack in there.

The Moser Gyro Loop they are trying out is good clean fun. I am pretty anxious to see the other Flats they add. The Screaming Swing will probably be set up similar to hot seat at the Kissimmee Park. I hope they don't move the Paratrooper, it's current location is pretty cool.

Anyone have a guess at what the steel coaster might be?

I went down to Fun Spot for Paratroopering fun and noticed they have posted a small poster of the concept art for the expansion. The large ferris wheel is on top of the entrance building, not the current one but the new one. There is a large replica of the St Louis arc which functions as part of the Skycoaster. Rumor has it they will have a Statue of Liberty as well. Screaming Swing is there as well as 8 or so good sized flats. The flats are around a little pond. The small steel coaster is a family invert, I don't know the make but many of you would for sure, it looks familiar. The woodie is...not a GCI, looks to be a Gravity Group ride, it's a hybrid. The layout is what you would expect. It probably has an 80 foot drop that crosses over followed by 9 or so small airtime hills. The turn around and the turns in general look to be pretty banked and the coaster crosses over itself several times. The run into the corner of the lot really allows for a decent sized ride. You can see little Timberliners on this track for sure.

I talked for a second with one of the guys and he added that the new go cart track could be open by summer. It will be good to see the construction starting. From a construction standpoint I was looking forward to seeing a GCI because they are just so nice looking but the hybrid looks like the right ride for Fun Spot. I heard a rumor some time ago that they were leaning hybrid but then all the GCI stuff came out. Either one would be great to have around here. What they have so far looks like a great local hangout, can't wait.

I just saw a report from Park Rumors, it says the coaster is a GCI but the model is steel structure. Has GCI ever built a hybrid? There is a good image of the coaster in their report. It also looks to say 65 feet high. Phase 2 is said to include a Windseeker. This apparently came from the Municipal planning meeting.
