The Golden Ticket Awards

Golden Tickets shows only one International Woodie in the Top 20. Enough said

Especially when 3/4 of the world's Intamin plug-n-plays aren't in the US.....

^Not everyone is a HUGE fan of I305 you know....just read the KD thread and see all the crap its gotten. I personally loved it, but I am very interested to see how it does in that other poll that comes out in a few months. To me, coming in 11th place and being top top new coaster in the poll by far is a very nice showing.

Didn't there used to be a "Most Beautiful Park" category that BGW always won? Was it replaced with "Best Landscaping"?

I remember seeing both at one point several year ago.

Regardless of what poll it is or how it is conducted, these are opinion polls of people in the industry. My opinion will differ from yours, which differs from mine, which differs from others whose differs from me, who differs from everyone. wow. Ok, so you get the point.

I will admit, I DO look at the polls, but only to help me plan trips, ie what have I ridden, what would i like to, have I heard of that one before, etc. etc.

Wasn't El Toro around 10 in its first year in this poll? And now it's all the way up to #2. I have a feeling I-305 will move up some in the coming years, though may never see #2 due to the OTSR.

^I vote in this poll and I'm not "in the industry."

Sorry, I realize sometimes things are taken in an unintended context, maybe it's because many of us here are nerds. (I work in an office full of them, and several of us who consider ourselves to be moderate nerds have resorted to keeping out of site, out of mind, as everything said or done in the office is taken overlly literal with people arguing ands/or's/what's/not's)

In the industry should have been worded differently, I will concede that. My definition of "in the industry" means having envolvement with, follower, enthusaist, etc.

My overall point tho, is that these types of polls are opinion based.

I'm also kind of surprised that Intimidator 305 got snubbed, but it is only its first year, and I predict it'll be in the top 10 of next year's list. However, I still can't believe that El Toro was beaten out again in the Top 10 Wood category; either I can just hope for next year, or I need to head out to Indiana and check out The Voyage for myself. Either way, kudos to all of the winners!

I need to get to El Toro... although I must say that the one plug-n-play (Colossus at Heide Park) that I've been on was meh for me. Airtime? Hell yeah. Speed? Smooth? Great pacing? Yeah, all of the above.

I just couldn't seem to get excited about it, even after multiple rides. I kept saying to myself, "this has all those things I like in a wooden coaster... why don't I like it more?"

But I don't. It felt like a steel coaster to me. There was that sense of being out of control that woodies have that this thing just didn't have. It was immaculately engineered and felt it... which I think was its downfall for me.

Voyage certainly can't be accused of being too smooth! While it's rougher than I'd like (maybe the Timberliners will help), it always amazes me with its relentless intensity and the out of control feeling is higher than just about any other coaster I've ever ridden. No matter which one you end up liking best, Voyage is definitely a must-ride.

How do you get a ballot for the GTA? I'm as guilty as the rest of us of bashing the GTA, but I've never bothered to try to get a ballot.

Email the editor (I forgot his name)

He responds asking "you'd consider yourself a well-traveled enthusiast, right?"

You reply yes, give him your address, and you get one in the mail next time

I also email the Golden Ticket coordinator a list of TPR members who have traveled with us quite a bit to get added to the list.

I will say Some of these results are on point, but Steel was off.lol I would have seriously gone another way with that. MF is not deserving of it at all. That was my most disappointing Coaster of the year. Bizarro is at my home park, but taking those 2 out, there are still others deserving . IM sure the day is coming soon when those 2 will start falling further behind in the polls !!! Though 10 Year old coasters taking #1 & #2 spots is pretty good in my eyes !!!!

I love this stuff! Anyone who knows me will know that the Voyage's ranking has me tickled pink, but I really don't understand it. I know that I LOVE the Voyage and it's layout, but it has gotten pretty brutal in the past year or so. I'm looking forward to the Timberliners, etc... but really? I thought that only rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth fanboys like myself would still call it #1

Just call me happily confused.

You also never know the last time someone rode a coaster and if they are basing their Top 10 it on their best ride ever.

I haven't ridden Voyage since it has gotten rougher, so it is still a top 10 coaster for me. If a lot of voters are in the same boat as me it could skew Voyage's ranking higher, but #1?

Many people must also be voting for Beast based on rides they got 15-20 years ago during night time ERT. That's the only way I can see Beast living where is currently ranks, because Beast used to be great. Nowadays, not so much!

I am honestly getting really tired of the same things winning year after year. What did they do, just cut and paste last year's winners?

This argument is pretty silly if you say it out loud a couple of times.

Why WOULDNT they win year after year? If something is good enough to win say.. best wooden coaster of the year, it seems to me that unless the coaster is destroyed, changes dramatically, or something else better comes along, it's going to win that award multiple times (possibly in a row). The same mindset applies with the more general park awards. Take the landscaping award. Unless BGE went to hell, another park opened or majorly stepped up it's game, BGE is likely to win that award in successive years.

Of course with all things in 'power ranking' you'll see some flip flopping, but it will generally remain the same week to week, or in this case, year to year.

^^^^ Well said.

These are the 2010 awards, not the "all time" awards. While we'll never know exactly why someone rated something the way they did, unless they say so, I think rides should be rated based on their current, 2010 status'. It's nice that the Beast used to be a 'beast' back in the 80s, but that coaster already had its time to shine, and unless something is done to completely restore it back to 1980s form, I think it's time to move over, let some new coasters take the spotlight for a bit, and let go of the past, in my opinion. The nice thing about Mitch's Poll is if you haven't ridden the Beast since, say 1985, then that is taken into account.

Also, regarding rating it on your best ride ever, this is how I do it, and I like this way a lot. Bear with me here, but I 'average' my rides, if you will. Obviously you can't average them like you do numbers (I guess technically you could if you break it down enough, but that's too time-consuming for me), but say I had only one excellent ride and nine average rides out of ten total on a certain coaster. Obviously my rating is going to lean more towards 'average' than it is 'excellent.' That's just my opinion.

Hmm--that would depend on whether one thinks those parks should've won those awards in the first place. And it could be that many who vote in this poll just, by reflex, vote for the same parks in the same categories every year. The poll itself encourges this to happen by providing a list of the same "nominees" year after year.

Just take the FunHouse/Walktrough category, for example. I love walkthrough attractions, and sample them whenever I can. 3 of the 5 voting choices are in the US: Noah's Ark, Frankstein's Castle and the new Ghost Ship at Morey Piers. The only reason the other two are included is input from people who have traeled to Europe recently. I happened to really enjoy all 3 of these. However, those 3 are probably the only 3 US walkthroughs that could hold a candle to the Top 10-15 Funhouses/Walkthroughs in Europe. Three years ago I don't recall any International selecetion in this category outside of Noah's Ark at Blackpool (which far superior to the Kennywood version). And that doesn't even take into account some awful good ones in Japan.

^Good point. This is why, from one perspective, it makes sense that Amusement Today also encourages participants to consider voting for attractions they haven't experienced, based on what they've read about them elsewhere from those who have. This does give attractions in other countries a better chance.

Then again, I have mixed feelings about this because I could never vote for a park or attraction that I haven't experienced personally.

Now, do I think that KW's Noah's Ark is a good walkthrough? Certainly. Do I think it's better than Liseberg's Hotel Gasten? No. (And here I can speak from experience.) But it's all a matter of opinion.
