Due to the satanic NFL TV rules, we had to go out to watch the Eagles game today. While out, I enjoyed a Sam Adam's Oktoberfest, which was quite tasty. Too bad my drinking of such excellent beer did not somehow cause an Eagle victory...

DerekRX - Was that a Coor's Light tap next to the Hoptimus tap in one of the pictures? I trust you had a talk with the proprietor of the establishment about that.

 

To all the experts in the forum, my wife and I want to try one of the Oktoberfest beers. Any recomendations?

Yes, that was a Coors tap, but I'll let them keep a few "redneck" beers on tap as long as they have the ratio the way it should be 20:1 (20 good beers to 1 bad).

 

As far as Oktoberfests go, you can't go wrong with Spaten if you can find it out your way (or any of the authentic German ones; Becks, Lowenbrau, etc). As far as American ones go, Sam Adams is a good choice overall. But if you have any craft brewed Oktoberfests around you, by all means, try them.

 

As for me tonight, time for another pumpkin ale, this time the Imperial Pumpkin from Weyerbacher. Really strong ale with a nice mix of pumpkin and spices. Not a session beer like Pumpkinhead though, WAY too strong for that (at least on a Monday)

I just got in on a few bottles of Sam Adam's "Brown Ale."

 

Not anything super special but I could session this beer for sure. Pretty tasty.

Monty Python's Holy Ail.

 

I saw it at the Beer Store on the weekend and said "oh hells yes". It actually wasn't too bad. Better than I expected. But then again, I wasn't expecting much.

 

It also had an awesome label, complete with the caption:

"Tempered over burning witches"

Tonight was time to finally taste the last of my Southern Tier variety pack, the Porter. While I'm not too big into porters, it was nice and dark with a nice chocolate coffee taste and was pretty drinkable. Its no old leghumper or anything like that, but it wasn't bad, and pretty much what you'd expect it to be, not a surprise like the others in the pack.

Surprisingly good with some coffee and chocolate hints. It actually tasted like a porter, hooray Southern Tier!

With Fall in full swing and Halloween fast approaching, I'm going to give this week's selections a theme. Pumpkin Ales! Yes everybody's fall fan favorite. I've got six different ones chilling in the fridge and I'll profile a new one each night this week.

 

We'll kick the week off with the original, that put pumpkin ales back on the map in 1984, from Buffalo Bill's in Hayward, CA. And it's an OK one. Nice balance between the pumpkin and spice flavorings. Good taste up front but the finish is kind of lacking. A little too watery. I'm interested to see how it stacks up against some of the others this week.

Ellen and I were out visiting my sister-in-law (wow, that's weird!) this past weekend and we had dinner at one of my favorite brewpubs- Willimantic Brewing Company/ Main Street Cafe in CT. I decided to sample two of their four IPA's (I kid you not!). The first one was V.E.G. IPA which had a nice hop flavor but not very complex. The second was called II IPA which was just what the name implied- a double IPA. At about 9% alcohol, this one tried to be a Dogfish Head 90 Minute but fell just a bit short. It was certainly more complex in flavor and the high alcohol content gave it the sweetness I enjoy. Definitely better than the VEG. Sadly, they hadn't tapped the Rail Mail Rye which I so love from there but the IPA's were a nice choice and the first I've had since getting back on the beer. No photos yet again. I promise a few from my honeymoon very soon.

Sam Adams draft. I drove back from Orlando and stopped by a sports bar to meet a friend in town from L.A. and we planned some parts of my trip to L.A. for New Years. He's been in california for two years and hasn't been to any parks or sight see.

Thought I'd get around to putting up the pics from our recent 4+ day trip down to central Florida for the Halloween stuff. Normally Kim and I go down just for Halloween Horror Nights and BGA's Howl-O-Scream. This year we decided to add on a couple of extra days to check out the Magic Kingdom event and the Food & Wine Festival at Epcot. Of course everything was great but who really wants to hear about how the parks were? You want to see what beers I drank, right?:lmao:

 

I'll try and put a new batch of pics up this week whenever I can.

 

We flew in early Thursday morning and headed straight to SeaWorld. Then it was off to the Boardwalk at Disney for some dinner before heading to the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at The Magic Kingdom.

Time for another pumpkin ale tonight. The Post Road Pumpkin Ale, brewed by the Brooklyn Brewery. I have to be honest, I didn't care for this at all. Very thin body, I could hardly tell the pumpkin from the spices, and worst of all, it had a hoppy finish. Now normally I don't mind this at all in my selections, but NOT IN MY FREAKING PUMPKIN ALE!!!

 

Just not my cup of tea.

^Good to know, Wally. I hadn't heard of it before, but Elissa called me today from Super Walmart for my beer order for the weekend, and that name sounded somewhat fun, so I went with it. Expect my review in a few days!

 

As for tonight, I went with my Avery Kaiser Imperial Oktoberfest. I could barely make out the Oktoberfest portion of it though, because the alcohol was so strong. Good stuff, but a little too much for me to enjoy as an Oktoberfest.

Tonight's pumpkin ale get's things back on track. The Wild Goose Pumpkin Patch Ale from the former Frederick Brewing (now Wild Goose after being bought by Flying Dog).

 

This is a good one. Nice dark orange color and spicey pumpkin aroma. Starts out good with a nice blend of pumpkin and spices that sticks around through the finish. Very sweet maltiness on the back on too. This is a very good pumpkin ale.

 

I think this has limited availabilty right now. I know my place in Maryland only got in a single case of it. If your in the Mid-Atlantic region and see this at your local place, grab it!

I drank nothing tonight! I was IN Harrisburg for a flight, but couldn't get to ABC in time, and the stupid terrorist level thing won't let me bring any beer with me. So now that I'm in limbo in Charlotte and everything is closed, I'm beerless. I'll be sure to make up for that tomorrow!

So this weekend, Kim and I were supposed to go down to the parks in VA but at the last minute decided not to, opting to just hang around the area instead. Saturday, we hit up a couple of beer spots and then had an impromptu meetup with Adam and Ellen at Hersheypark In The Dark.

After Hersheypark in the Dark, we all headed over to Red Robin for some late dinner. Sam Oktoberfest was of course the beer of choice for myself...

I enjoyed the Hop Nouveau so much, that I drained another. We'll be back in a few weeks when they have the pumpkin ale on again.

A fresh hop harvest ale made with 62 pounds of hops, picked right there on site. Straight off the hand pump, it rocked!
