Hello.

Quite recently, I was given permission by my family to plan our trip and I had chosen Cedar Point, being I had never been there, heard nothing but good things, and love coasters. My dad, though, wanted me to check Universal Studios, which I have only been to once as a six year old child. My oldest brother, then also recommended going to Universal, being his favorite amusement park.

Now I am torn, originally having my sights only on Cedar Point, but now not sure if Universal Studios would be a better experience.

So, I was wondering, which would you recommend?

You know your family a lot better than us.

Cedar Point = If your family is most interested in coasters.

Universal, Floridda = If your family wants more than coasters and an immersive them park experience.

People can give you all the recommendations you want. However, you probably already know enough about the parks to run your knowledge through the filter of what your family likes and dislikes to make your own decision.

I've never been to Cedar Point but seeing as how this is a family trip I'd suggest Universal. Larrygator makes some good points as well.

See? You've already opened yourself to getting advice from someone who's never been to one of your park options

Cedar Point over Universal Studios Hollywood (unless it's multi-day and you can hit up SFMM, DL/DCA, or Knotts). USH is literally a 1/2 day park when it's not crowded.

Universal Studios Orlando over CP. If time permits, can easily bounce over to Sea World for Manta, and of course, WDW looms large over the region.

I think most of the decision really is based upon available time and budget; airfare, hotels, perks that come with the hotels, etc.

CP won't be beat for the coasters, but USO is the complete theme park experience.

Larrygator is right on comparing the parks for your family. Plus, the two really are a comparing apples to oranges type deal.

I went to Cedar Point this year and Universal Studios Florida in 2001. With this being a family trip, I'd say take Universal. Cedar Point does have some great family style things to do but Universal truly does have something for everyone. So if there is a family member that does not like rides that much, there are many shows and just a fun atmosphere to the park.

The one thing about Universal is how interested in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter your family is. If that is something that would be high on your families priority list, you might consider Universal next year when it is done.

No matter which place you choose, you will have a great time. Both parks are worth a trip and provide a lot of great memories.

DBJ brings up a good point. Which Universal? I'm going to assume you're talking about Universal Studios Florida. Also, when are you planning this trip? ...2009, 2010?

See, this to me is false. Not completely, but mostly. I will agree that Universal is way better at immersive themeing, but Cedar Point has tons of things that the whole family can do together too. Cedar Point has five shows plus other various entertainment offerings, six shows if you have very little ones that would enjoy the Peanuts show in Camp Snoopy. They have the most amount of coasters as well as rides in general, there's bound to be some ride the whole family can do together.

Of course Universal is Universal. I think the biggest difference between the two parks would be cost and how long you want to be at the parks, Universal has a 7 day ticket for $99 each and CP has a four pack of Tickets for $140 (about $35 a ticket) but you also have to take into consideration location, Orlando has pretty decent transportation so you might not have to rent a car, but in Sandusky, if you are flying, you have really have little choice but to rent a car.

If you take these family vacations every year, as someone already mentioned, I would do Cedar Point this year and do Universal next year. Think of it this way, the most CP will do is add a ride, but Universal is adding an entire new land.

Both great parks. CP has the best collection of coasters in the world along with the beautiful setting on the lake. It is also more of a resort type experience unlike other Thrill parks. Universal on the other hand has some great shows (which I don't really care for) and some fantastic technologically advanced rides. Like many have said it depends on what you are looking for. Can't miss with either one.

CP is my favorite all time thrill park while Universal is my favorite theme park. Universal is definitely better than Disney unless you have a bunch of little kids.

Both are great parks for what they specialize in. But since this is a family vacation, I'd say Universal...they're isn't as much to do as a family at CP wheras almost everything is a family attraction there. Plus you have access to other stuff like world class beaches, the space center, etc., wheras there's less to do in the area of CP and the stuff that is there is mediocre compared to what you would get around Orlando.

You should save CP for another occasion, maybe a trip with friends. It's an amazing park but Universal is more ideal in this case, and this is coming from a semi-CP fanboy

This is probably my only chance to go to Cedar Point, but it seems most people in my family don't ride roller coaster other than my two brothers. So that's 3 out of 6 people. But, there is the fact that Florida is 16 hours away, while Ohio is roughly 7. For the sake of my family, I might have to go to Universal Studios, though sadly nothing there interests me other than the Hulk and a couple of rides. This is also probably the only chance I get to choose our vacation, but oh well.

I can tell you that there is no way you will be disappointed if you go to both Universal and Island of Adventure. Hulk was my least favorite ride in both parks. Wait till you ride Revenge of the Mummy, Spiderman, Terminator, Dueling Dragons, Jurassic Park, Men in Black, Ripsaw falls, the list goes on and on. You will love it!

Plus Simpsons and Rip, Ride, Rockit (if it's open).

Seriously, I don't know what your family's budget is but you could always run it by the folks to see if you could swing a trip to Sea World (Kraken and Manta) or Busch Gardens. I don't know how old you are (you sound sort of youngish) but I seriously doubt this will be the only time in your lifetime you'll have a chance to go to Cedar Point.

I vote Universal Orlando. I would sure take these coasters over Cedar Point coasters!:

-Incredible Hulk

-Dueling Dragons

-Revenge Of The Mummy

-Rip Ride Rocket if it's open

PLUS all these great rides too:

-Amazing Adventures Of Spider Man

-Dudley Do Right Ripsaw Falls

-Popeye & Bluto Rat Burdges white water rapids ride(this is the top rapids ride there is. You get drenched!)

-Jurassic Park River Adventure

-Simpsons

-Men In Black

-Twister

-Shrek 4D

-Cat In The Hat

-Jaws

-ET

so many others. Universal Orlando is the way to go. There is also Water Mania right next door. If you can afford it try to stay at the Portofino. It is the place to stay. You get free Universal Express by flashing your room key card during your whole stay & water taxi over to the park. I can't wait to go again. I haven't been since 2006 so I'm long over due. Your whole family will have fun. Make sure you do at least 2 days there & you could possibly fit in Water Mania.

First off, it's Wet n Wild, not Water Mania. Water Mania was located on 192 and closed a few years back.

Secondly, all of the hotels on property at Universal get the Express front of the line access. Royal Pacific and Hard Rock will also get you all the perks and be cheaper.

Yes, I did this in May (stayed at the Royal Pacific) and I HIGHLY recommend it!
