P. 161: Steel Curtain reopens on May 24th, 2025

I was just thinking Kennywood was probably aware of the problems before the public even said anything. It's one of those problems that's big enough to notice, but not big enough for an emergency fix, so I'm sure they were planning on fixing it from the getgo. I'm sure they listened to the guests' complaints too, but for justification.

^ That's a valid point....I hadn't thought much about it, but they easily could have noticed it when they were riding through test runs of it prior to park opening. It's just funny how some people were pretty vehement about their dislike of the change, while others (myself included) thought it was perfectly fine. I always thought of it as a "bucking bull" sensation that was kind of cool. Even my wife, who usually is not one for any sort of "rougher" transition thought it was "pretty neat".

I wonder if they still would've went through with fixing it if the response from guests would have all been positive?

Now all we need is to repaint the Phantom... That rail is going to have more rust on it than the Pittsburgh Pirates if not painted.

BTW anyone notice the Phantom support down by the water treatment plant will all the chunks of paint missing?

I've seen worse. I couldn't care less how a ride looks...as long as it is a good ride. You really think they don't know what they are doing and are just going to leave the rail bare metal, and exposed to rust?

The main reason the change occurred was the mass amount of visitor complaints the park received about the roughness...I'm not sure if Parques Reunidos decided the park needed to get it fixed early in the season, but I do know that the park started weekly inspections of that section of track which I've never seen them do before. Obviously the section was a major concern for both the park and PR, so that's why the fix happened.

^ Qbots would be ridiculous, 95% of the year you don't have to wait longer than 5 minutes to get on any of the rides (with the exception of the Exterminator and maybe now Sky Rocket) anyways

Already figured it out....

from Kennywood.com

Please check the Kennywood website starting March 1 for more information, restrictions, and passholder perks.

So they're just announcing the details.

Kennywood has confirmed today at Coasterbash! that the Sky Rocket will be open for Coaster Con! They didn't give an exact date but I would expect it to be ready around mid June.

Also the hight requirement will be 54"

Also no Lo-Q

You heard it first

That certainly does sound like a targeted opening around mid-June. Works for me, although I was hoping for the park's sake they might have been able to hit a Memorial Day weekend opening. Sounds like footers are pretty wrapped up then. I can't wait to see this puppy go vertical! I'm intrigued to see it take shape, especially since the park has taken an admittedly odd PR approach in that they've still yet to release any major info on their new coaster (such as a layout or pov rendering).

As for the season passes, I'm getting one for sure! You really can't beat that 90 buck price tag!

I wouldn't put a Memorial Day opening out of the question just yet... No, I don't know when the projected opening day is, but given the progress the park is now making, it sounds somewhat realistic. Having passed the park today, it looks like ALL the supports have arrived (again, I'm not sure, but the lot is full and none have arrived recently). Almost all the footers are poured with about 15% still waiting, but all seem to be at least dug. That leaves the track, which there seems to be a good portion of on-site, but it obviously isn't all there yet.

As of today, the footer work is EXTREMELY close to completion. There are a total of 32 pieces of track on site; I believe there will be 57. Two cranes arrived today, so I assume we're VERY close to seeing this thing built at last!

Right now I am currently in Pittsburgh and on the Turnpike I passed a billboard for Sky Rocket. I just think it's wierd seeing this and knowing that the ride won't open until late in the season. It was a good looking advertisment though.

I would imagine with the nice weather we are having around here they should be able to really get moving on the construction. Memorial day is still more than 2 months away and a lot can be accomplished in that amount of time. Look how quick the Intimidators went up and how much bigger they are than this. I can possibly see a memorial day opening if there are no glitches along the way.

Tomorrow will see the beginning of construction at last! I visited today, and here are a few interesting photos:

There are two cranes at the park. The larger crane is on site. The boom is extended out but no construction yet.

The other, smaller crane, along with a support trailer. These either arrived today or were loaded on today to be the first ones to go up.

On the left is the start of the ascent up the first hill. Unlike the rest of the pieces that are here so far, there is a spine, probably thanks to the force of the launched train. The piece next to it is the end of the launch, and you can see how the opposite end curves upward. Once these are attached, you can sure there will be a signature "NERD SHOT" where the spine begins.
