Disneyland Resort (DL, DLR, DCA) Discussion Thread

P. 394: New DCA attractions and Esplanade arrival experience!

^ From the first second I stepped onto WDW property on our first visit in 2006 I was totally at ease at how different it was than Disneyland. And even though I grew up with Disneyland and the fact that we've only been to WDW 3 times, I like that property better than DL as a whole. And it's not even close.

Just so happens my style of what I enjoy fits closer with WDW than Disneyland. Most people who live in SoCal vehemently disagree with me. But I think your explanation of it just being "different" and not necessarily better or worse is pretty spot on.

Unfortunately Disney itself keeps trying to make both resorts the same which is, IMO, a HUGE mistake.

Exactly. There is nothing wrong with Disneyland being a locals park. Tokyo Disneyland is the best park in the world I've been to and it's even more of a locals park than Disneyland is!

What exactly do you mean by "Locals Park"?

Ditto, and the moment I visited WDW the whole "which resort is better" argument suddenly disappeared. I realized that you can't compare the two. They are completely different. And if you really want to compare them, Californians are going to be sad with the result. Just be happy with the fact that they are both awesome places to visit.

He means exactly what he's explained a million times. Most of Disneyland's attendance comes from local markets (California, Nevada, and Arizona). So the guests are "locals." Disney World draws its crowds more from distant travelers from the Northeast, Midwest, the South, Texas; as well as international markets like Europe, South America, Africa, etc.

I am looking at applying to be a Cast Member starting in the summer at DLR. Does anyone know when would be the best time to apply would be? Now or closer to summer? I would want to start late May after my semester is over. Any tips?

When I've been to WDW, and CM's ask me where I'm from, the second they learn that I fit the definition of Disneyland "local" their next question is usually which place I like better. As if they're expecting me to either say WDW is better, or go all DLR fanboy and rave about how Walt's ghost still inhabits the only park He walked in.

Instead the answer I usually give is basically the one you just gave. You can't really compare the two. One is 47 square miles while the other is one park smaller than MK with another built in its parking lot, with a couple hotels across the street. But I would argue Disneyland makes very good use of its limited space. The important part is they are both awesome places to visit, and I'm perfectly happy with DLR being my "local" park and WDW being my "destination" resort. If DLR was the place on the other side of the country that cost 4-figures to visit, I might never go, especially with WDW right there.

There's nothing wrong with being a "locals park" at all. As Robb said, Tokyo Disney is far more a "locals park" than DLR, and it's one of the best theme park resorts on the planet. It's not a knock on a park to say it's a "locals park" of any kind. It's simply acknowledgment of the different audiences.

Back when Millionaire was running on both coasts, DCA's Millionaire contestants would always, ALWAYS!, be locals who'd been constants numerous times. When I went to WDW to see Studios' Millonaire, contestants would be from New England, Tennessee, Missouri, Ohio, Minnesota, all over the place, including Europe and South America.

Well, other than the "locals" themselves!

Jokes, jokes.... but seriously, at least the Tokyo Disneyland locals don't ruin the experience for you!

A Limited Time Annual Passholder Magic Event

Such a happy thought: A special screening of Peter Pan (available on Blu-ray™ and HD Digital for the first time) plus an additional 2 hours — after Park closing — to enjoy select Fantasyland attractions!

With Limited Time Annual Passholder Magic, Annual Passholders have exciting opportunities, offers and events like this:

Dates

February 27, 2013

Screening Location

Main Street, U.S.A. Opera House (home to Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln) in Disneyland Park

Screening Times

11:00 a.m.

1:00 p.m.

3:00 p.m.

5:00 p.m.

7:00 p.m.

Fantasyland After Hours Times

8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

8:00 p.m. Park closes for Guests not participating in Limited Time Annual Passholder Magic event. Park closing time may change without notice.

Currently Scheduled Fantasyland After Hours Attractions

Available attractions subject to change without notice.

The remainder of the Park will not be open.

Peter Pan's Flight

Snow White's Scary Adventures

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

Pinocchio's Daring Journey

King Arthur Carousel

Dumbo the Flying Elephant

Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough

Alice in Wonderland

Mad Tea Party

Casey Jr. Circus Train

Matterhorn Bobsleds

This looks like a fun event, though I'm gonna guess space will actually be limited for this one. Fantasyland isn't that big, but that is a decent number of attractions open! I wonder if there will be any sneak preview of the new Fantasy Faire area!

Ive done two of the extended hour nights at DCA and those have been great, I'm sure this will be just as awesome!

^ A "non local" park would instead offer these types of things to vacationers. I think all of the added AP perks and the fact that only people who live close to the park are going to do this on a Wednesday night kind of puts that argument to rest.

I'm not the one arguing that. I know it's a locals park.

In December my friends and I decided to marathon the Matterhorn around closing. I won't be doing that ever again in these bobsleds, lol. It beat my back and my rear end up pretty good!

Whenever I travel to FL, how different the people are is always the first thing I notice. It's amazing just how stark the contrast is.

Here is a small update from the blog about the new Fantasy Faire:

Clopin, Figaro and Tangled Tower Take Their Places in Fantasy Faire at Disneyland Park

posted on February 27th, 2013 by Erin Glover, Manager, Social Media and Print, Disneyland Resort

Yesterday, I gave you a sneak peek at Clopin’s Music Box, an interactive element coming to Fantasy Faire when it opens March 12 at Disneyland park. Today, I’m excited to share a video of the installation of this piece, along with two other charming details: Tangled Tower, which is located in the center of Fantasy Faire, and – my favorite element of this new area – Figaro the cat from “Pinocchio.” Watch as Michel Den Dulk, Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering, tells us more about these magical features.

I cant wait to take my niece to this!

I cant believe some pencil-pushing bean counter at TDA would approve of an over-budget meet-and-greet. This is Walt's original Magic Kingdom, not WDW where they spend more money on NextGen and Princesses. Not only does this decline Disney's standards by degrees and allow guests to love Las Vegas bombasts of princesses instead of new attractions, but the theme of Fantasyland now barfs into Main Street. If Walt just saw what disaster that was erupting in his precious park, he would have a fit and then demand that WDW be torn down! Think of all the money they could have done with that by fixing chipped paint in the backstage areas and adding more waterfalls and trees!

Joking aside, I never really paid attention at Fantasy Faire until now. This is looking really good! I'm not that interested in seeing the princesses, but I would check it out just for the thematic factor and to try the treats at Marice's cart. I'm looking forward to checking this out.

^ LOL. I really could have believed that post as a Disney fanboy post.

I am really looking forward to seeing this place in action! It looks like a perfect place for all the princesses to gather.

I love the animatronics touch, with Figaro and the bird in the upper window.

I'm also liking the Figaro animatronic. He was always a personal favorite as a kid, so much that I now have a tuxedo cat named Figaro. Oddly enough his personality is very similar to the cartoon character.
