jray21 Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Just saw Life of Pi. Odd movie, not what I expected, but I liked it, but I also like almost every movie. It's somewhat like Cast Away, but on a boat most of the time, and with some fantasy thrown in. The visuals and 3D was really good, but in a simple way. I've heard the quality is like Avatar, but it's hard to compare the two. Avatar was about a ton of visuals, colors, and action. Life of Pi has more single framed shots, and simple but great looking scenes. If you like animals, you'll like it but it can be sad (no that doesn't give anything away).
onewheeled999 Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 ^ As a fan of the book, I was a little worried because the commercials/trailers made it out to be the exact opposite of what you're saying. It looked like a big spectacle, a special-effects extravaganza like Avatar... I believed the movie was more deserving of a simple, minimalist style. But seeing as I've recently gained an interest in great cinematography (Drive <3), you may have just convinced me to see that movie.
jray21 Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 There were a few Avatar style moments, but not nearly as overwhelming. Pretty incredible scenes that could easily be pictures on a wall. Below are a few of the Avatar style scenes. Different, but not action and overwhelming. Most of the movie is like the 3rd picture.
ArundelHigh Coasters Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Saw Breaking Dawn the other day with my sister, it was really good, but I'm not going to spoil it for any of you that are going to watch it. I'm watching Matilda right now, brings back so many child memories . I love that part where Bruce Boggtrotter is eating the cake, and Mrs. Truchbowl is terrorizing him. They look like mother-and-son in that scene.
Brandy524 Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 We watched Arthur Christmas last week with the girls and we ended up going and buying it. It was the best Christmas movie we've seen in a long time! The girls enjoyed it and Danny and I found ourselves laughing, too. GrandSanta is hilarious!
alilstronger Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Watched Liz & Dick the other night only to see just how horrible Lindsay was in it. The pleasant surprise was the whole thing was pretty awful so her performance just matched the level of the medocher made for tv movie. In short thank god we got Mean Girls before she totally fell apart. I was so excited for this but ended up missing it (No DVR ) anyway due to my date I was on but I am glad now. I keep hearing how bad it was. I miss the old Mean Girls and Confessions of a Drama Queen Lindsay! I am such a fan but she really needs to get it together. Just saw Life of Pi. I wish I liked movies like this. I just can not get past how computerized it looks. To me it looks really fake and my mind can not separate fantasy and just looking fake. That is probably why I RARELY like fantasy, sci fi, and action movies because the first place my mind ALWAYS goes is that would never happnen - I am such a literal thinker. Also I really do NOT like 3D movies at all. They hurt my head.
VinTheAttendant Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I watched Tremors today. It has been so long since I've last seen it that I may as well have been watching it for the first time. I didn't remember too much from it except for the monsters and the climax, so I didn't really know what to expect from it. Well, the movie started off a little slow, and I was worried that it would turn into a Jaws ripoff. But as soon as the characters were all laid out and the plot was in full gear, this movie became SO much more enjoyable than I remembered. It knows exactly what it wants to be: silly, suspenseful, B-Movie tribute, and fun. I think the fact that they made it into a comedy made me care for the characters more than if it were just straight-up scifi. And for such a dumb movie, it had surprisingly smart moments; the perilous situations grew more and more frightening, and their escape tactics were really clever. The monsters looked great, the cast was a riot, and I admit that I spent most of the movie with my feet off the ground. This was just a fun watch, Tremors made my night!
jray21 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 That's such a great movie! I like Tremors 2 as well, but 3 was just terrible!
alilstronger Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Watched The Big Gay Musical the other day. I thought it was hilarious how it makes fun of religion and the guy that plays God is so funny! Loved the music too (it is a musical after all hehe).
onewheeled999 Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Here we go, vague and brief movie reviews because I tend to go on and on in my posts! The Green Mile: Disturbing, yet beautiful. Incredibly well-acted. I've never wanted to punch an antagonist in the face so much. Highly recommended. Drive: Loved it just as much the second time. Again, disturbing, yet so gorgeous. Slow and methodical, but at the same time brutal and intense. Give it a chance. Pride & Prejudice (2005): Beautiful cinematography, pretty good acting. Those long-take shots, man. I didn't particularly like the book, but this was a little better. I wouldn't watch it again, personally, but I can see why people would love it.
RCF Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Back to do an update on what I have done in film, if anyone saw my last post from months ago. I have done one other film, which will be mini-series on Discovery Channel called Gold Fever. I have a featured extra in it, being the banking intern. Ad-libbed a line, but don't think of it as such. In an interesting note, I got called back after being on the set of Orc Wars to do some more shots they weren't able to get before. With this, I was given a line! One of the main reasons why was because I have worked with prosthetics on my face before and know how to talk to make the prosthetic mask look real. Should be out in a few months from what the director says. Does anyone want to follow these updates I have of my acting career, or is this not the place?
SoCalCoasters Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Well, I can cross one more thing off my movie bucket list. Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail: My god...where to begin? I now under stand why exactly this movie is so loved and quoted! Nearly every scene has at least 3-4 quotable lines, all of equal hilarity! Monty Python really has created one of the funniest movies of all time, and even though it's over40 years old, it's still funnier than 90% of stuff we have today.
cfc Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 ^One might say this it is . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UArbzOExaBg
imawesome1124 Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 I don't think I've EVER been as excited for a movie premiere as I am for The Hobbit. I don't quite understand why it's being divided into three parts, but according to my dad if the LotR movies had everything the books had, they would be 10-12 hours each, so maybe Peter Jackson is trying to get every detail from The Hobbit in the movie(s). This is the only movie in the past 5 years where I actually said "I have to see this in the theater".
cfc Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I sat through Brave tonight, and while it isn't "Cars II bad," it's definitely one of Pixar's weakest movies--call it "Mother Bear." (Hmm--yet another weak Disney animated flick about someone being turned into a bear.) The voice work saves it.
jray21 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Disney Signs Netflix Deal It'll be so nice to be able to watch some Disney classics on Netflix instead of having to use/find my DVDs, but 2016!? That seems a little too far off. Netflix signs unprecedented movie deal with DisneyThe deal will let Netflix subscribers stream films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Marvel and Disneynature. Starting in 2016, that is. You knew there was a catch. by Greg Sandoval December 4, 2012 11:51 AM PST First the good news: Disney is giving Netflix access to some of its top movies at the same time it releases them to pay TV services. Now, the bad news: The deal doesn't kick in until 2016. The companies announced today that Netflix will become the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated feature films from the Walt Disney Studios. Sure, the delay is a drag. But this is still a groundbreaking deal for Netflix and the entertainment industry. In the past, Netflix has typically obtained content from the six major Hollywood studios through intermediaries such as pay TV services. Netflix once had access to movies from Disney through a licensing agreement with Starz, but that deal expired earlier this year. Since at least early 2011, Netflix has struggled to obtain movies from most of the largest Hollywood studios, and customers were irked. This agreement now promises to make Netflix's subscribers happier -- in 2016, at least -- while also putting it on the same footing with some of its competitors in cable, such as HBO, Verizon and Time Warner Cable. What we don't know is how much Netflix had to shell out for this, but it seems safe to say it was a lot of money. Some more good news for Netflix: Managers cut a separate multi-year deal with Disney to bring some older catalog titles to Netflix immediately. Some of the titles include movie classics such as "Dumbo," "Pocahontas" and "Alice in Wonderland." The news had to trigger a collective gasp from Netflix shorts. In afternoon trading, the company's shares were up 15 percent to $87.60. The Disney partnership is the best news Netflix has reported in more than 18 months. Back in the summer of 2011, CEO Reed Hastings triggered a year-long slide in the company's stock by fumbling a price hike and attempt to split off the DVD business. What's so surprising about this deal is that some of my studio sources were predicting that Netflix was done. They were saying that there was no way the company could afford a deal like this. Yet here it is. Let's tick off just some of the ways this helps Netflix. It hands instant credibility to Netflix's claims that the company is a competitor to the bigger cable players. Users of Netflix's Internet streaming service can now expect to find more of the hottest movies from the top studios on the streaming service for the rock bottom price of $8 per month. Netflix also distances itself from some of its online competitors, such as Amazon and Apple, who can't offer the same selection for anywhere near the price. As a side note, Ted Sarandos' stock at Netflix has likely shot up -- if it could go any higher. Sarandos is the company's content-acquisition chief and the man in charge of forging the studio relationships. The Disney agreement is likely another win for him. My sources say Hastings is a big fan of Sarandos, and records show the CEO has compensated his top lieutenant well over the past few years. So, Netflix just threw down. Now let's see how HBO, Amazon and Verizon respond.
molemaster43 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Men in Black III - I enjoyed this. I don't exactly know what I enjoyed, but I did. I thought some of the humor was interesting and I thought Josh Brolin as Young Agent K was hilarious. And Bill Hader as Andy Warhol? Awesome! 8/10
I305KD Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 The Campaign - This movie was HILARIOUS! Marty Huggins (Zach Galafinakis) was the best. Skyfall - Best new James Bond movie in a long time. One of the awesomest movies ever! The Other Guys - HILARIOUS!!! My 2nd favorite movie! Miracle - A movie about the 1980 USA hockey team. I think I'm the only one that watches it but being the hockey fan I am..... What can I say! It's awesome!
molemaster43 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 ^I think you may want to turn on FX at 7:30 PM EST
rcdude Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I saw Skyfall again over Thanksgiving weekend, but I've seen a few other movies since then. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 2: I'm not really a Twilight fan, but since I ended up seeing all the previous movies in theaters for one reason or another I felt like finishing the series off. After the awful Breaking Dawn-Part 1 (my least favorite in the series) I was expecting another horrible move but I was surprised. This is the best of the Twilight films, as it actually feels like there is a point to it as opposed to a random love story with little going for it. It's very different from the other films, and contains one of the most violent action sequences I've seen in a PG-13 film. The acting was also better in this one than in the previous ones. Despite that, it's still very cheesy and just an okay movie, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're not a fan of the series in the first place. C+ Lincoln: This move got really good reviews, and as much as I wanted to like it I just couldn't. The acting was great and the film was well done, but I just can't get into Historical Dramas (they're one of my least favorite types of film), especially when they crawl along and last more than two hours. We were debating between this, Argo, and Life of Pi last weekend, and I'm guessing I would have liked the other two films better, but oh well. Not a horrible movie, just not one of my favorites. B-/C+ from me, but if you're into Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, or political dramas it would probably be closer to a B+. Moneyball: I don't know why it took me so long to see this, but it was worth the wait. This film was very, very good. Probably my favorite "based on a true story" movie, as well as my favorite sport movie. I'd even say it belongs on my top 30 movies list. This one would definitely be my pick for best film of 2011. A- What's left for 2012? I definitely want to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (and I'll probably need to see it at least twice...once in regular 2D like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and once in the new 48 fps 3D just to see how it is), but other than that I don't think there's anything else on my must see list. Overall, I'd say it's been a rather disappointing year, but 2013 is looking like it will be better.

alilstronger Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I finally have seen To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newman for the first time (love my Netflix DVDs hehe) and I absolutely love this movie. Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo killed them roles! It had a lot of funny one liners that I loved. I just wish they would have shown all of the dramatic scenes - like when Chi Chi told that boy she did not want him, when Vida beat up the man, and more drama shown with the relationship between Stockard Channings character and her husband.
SoCalCoasters Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Wanted: Really enjoyed this movie. The action was a bit gratuitous but the story kept me intrigued and the cinematography was quite artsy. The key board scene is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.
Sir Clinksalot Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Tucker and Dale vs Evil OMFG ... one of the funniest damn movies I've seen in awhile. I had heard some awesome things about it but for one reason or another I just kept putting it off. Not sure why. Certainly recommended.
SuperShawn Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 ^ That movie was hysterical! It kind of flew under the radar when it came out and I hadn't heard much about it, but damn is it worth watching. Role Models: one of the better stupid comedies I've watched over the years. The LARP jokes just slay me every time I see it as well as Jane Lynch's character. Always suggest watching it for mindless entertainment with some solid one liners.
