jsahockey09
If you haven't seen the plans for Coney Island yet you need to. They are going to completely steal the park of it's classic nature by making it look like something off a Vegas strip. In my opinion they deffinately need to re-do the park, I'm not saying they shouldn't at all. I'm saying they should rebuild it to what it looked like in it's hey-days. If anyone else has an opinion on this, please post.
ECZenith
Nothing wrong with progress, if they go through with the $1.5 billion overhaul it would increase tourism and offer us some new modern day rides. In my opinion, the park went through its hey-days phase when it was... well... in its hey-days.
jsahockey09
That's not what I am saying at all. What I am saying is that they should re-do the park to look like what it did during it's hey-day with all the modern attraction that people like to gather the crowds. It's not like I'm saying to take out everything and go back to the 20's completely with no modern technology. Kind of like a Kennywood or Blackpool Pleasure Beach park that still has that old time feel but with modern attractions.

ginzo
^ Isn't that exactly what they ARE doing? I'm all for the new look of the park! --Robb I recently watched Coney Island, a documentary by Ric Burns. Actually, old school Coney was supposed to have a futuristic thing going on. Dreamland Park (one of the three Coney parks), for example, lit up 1,000,000 light bulbs at night, which was quite a technological feat for 1904. Dreamland's most popular exhibit was a baby incubation exhibit, which was quite high tech for that time. Some doctor couldn't sell any hospitals on his ideas. So, he opened up shop at Coney Island, and turned it into an exhibit.
jsahockey09
I understand what you are saying completely and it's helped me understand what they are trying to do there. My point is that I think they should make it appear as it would in those days, giving it a classic feel instead of making it expensive and outrages like the rest of NY. EDIT: maybe this will help what I'm am trying to say. "We all want a revitalized Coney Island, but what they're proposing would change the nature of a place that touched the hearts of millions of people," said Charles Denson, executive director of the Coney Island History Project. "We all want to see improvements, but all those high-rises? That's not Coney Island." If you want the rest of the article tell me.
Skramp
I think the designs look very cool. Would be very interesting to see if it actually materializes. Seems like New Yorkians have been talking for years about what to do at Coney and nothing has ever happened, so we will see.
Ccron10
I thought they stopped these plans? Weren't we talking about this early in the year?

coasterbill
Coney Island is really ghetto and crappy. Anything is an improvement.
Coaster Sim. Fan
If they keep the cyclone and wonder wheel I think it is for the better. From what I have heard the park is really going down hill.
Tanks4me05
Besides, I think not only is Cyclone owned by thie city and not the park itself, but it is a National Landmark (not only an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark) so I'm pretty sure that is safe. I think the Wonder Wheel is a National Landmark also.
FLIPDUDE
It's been known fromd ay 1 that the Cyclone is staying. As for the wonder wheel - I can see it in the casino computer rendering. it's a slim green/blue ferris wheel so it's kind of hard to recognize there but I most definately see it. on a color and concrete background so it's hard to notice but I can definatley see it. I can also see the astroland observation tower and log flume. so I'm assuming anything to the east of the wonder wheel has a high chance of being safe. Also good that they're keeping nathan's hot dogs. I've been to coney island twice and have yet to try them. ?It basically looks like half the projec is gonna be built on the old site of the thunderbolt and the parachute tower - which was pretty much empty anyway(the tower was inoperaitonal and the Thunderbolt is long gone). the other half will apparanlty take the place of areas like where the Jet star was(thoguh it hasnt beenn operating for a while), the go karts, some minor rides, and potentially the power surge and bumper cars. the big rides appear to be staying, so I think it could be good. Though look out on the water. it looks like they're gonna build a new, bigger wheel. That just rubs me the wrong way I guess.
KGA29
I just went to the park today. It was pretty ghetto. I'm glad they're giving it some updates.
Homer
Are they getting rid of the Cyclone? They wouldn't do that. The Cyclone is a city monument and I doubt NYC would lay a wrecking ball on Cyclone. It seems kind of dismal that Coney Island was practically king of all parks back in the 1900's has kind of toppled down and deteriorated into a park many people consider "ghetto." From pics I have seen, the area needs a refurbishment and update. Hopefully the plans happen and Coney Island becomes the star destination it once was. jsahockey09
It definitely needs refurbished I'm just not sure with what they are thinking. Coney has a deep history and high rise hotels aren't included. Although I'm all for someone cleaning up the place and making it not the "ghetto" anymore because I too know that it is not only in the ghetto but it is a part of the ghetto. I just think they need to take a different approach. Getting rid of some of the little carny rides could be a start. Replacing them with some newer rides that are a little more "stable". The of course a dream of mine has aways been to see what the Steeplechase Park, Luna Park, and Dreamland Parks looked like back in their day. I think if they could somehow bring those back in way that combines some of the most modern technology that would be great.
RollerC
Its just modernization. I mean...the average person can care less about Classic Coney Island...but when they see the new project...they'll see all the shiny glass and pointy objects and the worlds first coaster to have the trains comming right at eachother...they'll want to go! jsahockey09
I can see what you mean, but the architecture is just going to appear the same as Times Square and for that matter, the rest of NY. Although I love the architecture in NY and Times Square I feel that Coney has too deep a history to be replaced with high rise hotels and something from the Vegas strip, in place of the one spot where you can still find circus sideshows, family owned vendors, and hand painted signs. coasterbill
They better not build anything too big or it will really destroy the view from the right field seats at Keyspan park.
DCody
I'm torn. On one hand, I tend to thumb my nose at "progress" in classic parks. Maintenance/cleanliness is one thing-- completely destroying the vibe is another. Ghetto or not, Coney is still a magical place. It's pure New York. I love the rowdy ride operators, the shady characters on the boardwalk, and the romantic, shambolic quality of the parks. My avatar is me exiting the Zipper at Coney; unfortunately I cropped out the stoned-looking ride op! However, Coney/Astroland was probably destined for destruction otherwise. This was one of those evolve-or-die scenarios. So with that in mind, I'm pleased that some attention is being paid to this legendary place. Axman
Apparently, Astroland doesn't even own the Cyclone. It's owned and operated by the City of New York, and will remain unchanged before, durring and after the re-model. Astroland is the nearest venue, and has "adopted" it inot their line-up of attractions. Besides, the Cyclone is not even on the plot of land that's going to be torn up and re-biult. It's on the other side of the street. Oh, and the Coney Island Cyclone IS a National Historic Landmark, the Wonder Wheel, however is not. I didn't even know that Deno's was even a part of the remodel. I thought it was just Astroland.
RCFreak
I went there a few weeks ago. It really sucked, the rides were really fun. (Their breakdance had an amazing and long program) but overall I felt kinda dirty there. I'll be glad for any improvements to the place; then again I don't have any nostalgia for the place as it was my first visit.
jsahockey09
I love all the rides there. Breakdance is the most amazing flat ever and the Cyclone is number one in my book.
Tanks4me05
^ The Cyclone? Good? No offense, but the time I went there (July 2005), that thing was rougher than anything I could imagine. I could just tell from the top of the lift, looking at the track on the bottom of the first drop that it was going to hurt, and the un banked elevated turns taken at high speeds didn't help either. Right, now, of the 15 wooden coasters that I have ridden, Cyclone at Astroland is ranked 15. Did Cyclone have a major re track in the past 2 years?
