^Jer, they were pretty good! I think he got the Oreo flavoured ones. He got talking with one of the cute girl staff members to guess what he had, and they spotted the Oreo ones right away!

Ice cream truly is a good way to a woman's heart.

Part 10b - Get Kentucky Rumbled at Beech Bend!

Ok, so after a few great hours at Kentucky Kingdom, we drove 90 mins south to Bowling Green. Even with the extra hour, we didn't have enough time to stop at the Corvette Factory and take the tour, but that'll have to be added to the list of "culture credits" to be done.

Beech Bend really is in the middle of nowhere. You can't even see the park until you're right on top of it. I said to Ian that I thought Kentucky Rumbler would end being the best coaster of the day. It turned out to be one of the best on the whole trip!

There's not much else at the rest of the park, it's really quite a fairground affair. But the politeness and great service of the staff made it a real fun day and made up for any shortcomings the park may have. They don't get many English guests there, so we were talking to everyone we passed as well with our fancy accents!

In fact, the only downer is that SCAT 2 wasn't on site. However, with the next day ahead being a long one, that was a blessing in disguise.

Beech Bend is proof that you don't need the biggest or the best rides to have an awesome time. I'd honestly rate it above every Cedar Fair property on the trip. It's totally unpretentious, always a great laugh, and with Kentucky Rumbler on their books, it really is the icing on the cake.

The sad thing is, that the investment in the new GCI hasn't paid off, yet. But if people made the effort to get to this great little park, it would sure help them out a lot. Quite simply, Beech Bend is good, clean, fun. Go there. Go there now.

kyrumbler4.jpg.14db1b19bdba8072d39502dd85b4936f.jpg

Thanks for an awesome time Beech Bend! Any guesses where we are headed next? Part 11 coming up soon...

We had a rodent on board!

kyrumblerlogo.jpg.ce917dbb1dfbcd79564710f083771ef2.jpg

As you can see by the clever double use of this photo, this is one ride we had to do again and again.

We didn't have ERT, but as far as I'm aware we did have one thing that the TPR Midwest trip didn't have...

kyrumbler3.jpg.263c53fa735e2b7b00744cca8e0925ae.jpg

For those uber-losers (I mean geeks) the first drop was inspired by the Airplane coaster of Rye Playland fame.

kyrumbler5.jpg.2776b30fef888371c1d61ee580a6d470.jpg

And what an awesome ride it was! We got several goes and really got our money's worth.

kyrumblerian.jpg.f8ca2c87b40c190a92645e84b789090f.jpg

Ian is. And he wants a ride.

This ride is is just fun, fun, fun from station to station.

We sure made up for SCAT 2's absence by giving this a good whirl.

Nice TR..

And I'd have to agree about the Kentucky Rumbler.. it made the whole park worth a stop on the Midwest Trip.. it was like you said, FUN, FUN, FUN, and more fun. I rode it appx 25 times the day we were there..

It reminded me a lot of Renegade at VF.. actually, both are worth a trip just to ride them. Rumbler was definitely my favorite woodie on the whole Midwest trip.

I also agree about Avalanche, that it was a really fun coaster. But many on the Midwest trip didn't seem to think so. They did one ride and were done. I actually thought the back seat was really rough, then tried the middle car and it was a bit less rough, then found the front row to be the smoothest and most fun, and ended up riding it 12 times, mostly in the front. It's another must-ride coaster if you just want to have fun! Not nearly as good as Renegade or Rumbler, but still very fun. And if you don't want the pain/shaking, sit in the front.

I thought Hades was fun and very intense, but there was SERIOUS, SERIOUS jackhammering on a curve near the end of the ride that was horrible. It made the ride difficult to re-ride. (Though I did manage a handful over the 2 days we were there.) Have your Advils handy!

But it's greatto see what other's think when they're riding.

p.s. Valleyfair is my home park, and I have to agree about Excalibur and Wild Thing as well! Excalibur is intense, but not really re-rideable, and Wild thing gets boring after a ride or two.. they need to speed it up a bit.

Beech Bend looks like a pretty nice park, but it still has a very carnival look to it. As for Kentucky Kingdom, it looks like it is a lot better than my visit last year. Don't get me wrong, it was still a nice park, but it seemed to lack a certain quality. The new water park looks nice, and it is a major improvement over the way it was before. Hopefully Six Flags can reinvest in this park since it has potential, and hopefully the flat ride selection is improved.

Fair comments. I think what a lot of people forget is that the rides are only as good as the day you ride them on. I thought Voyage was far too physical, especially at the back. But I didn't have any night rides, and rode in the morning when it was still bouncing around.

Hades was a very physical ride, it certainly takes its toll after a few rides on it.

Avalanche was very smooth when I rode it, and I didn't have any problems on the back row. But I would agree it's a better ride at the front.

The GCIs we rode don't have crazy moments of airtime, but there's enough little pops to keep you entertained, and there's such a great mix of everything. I'd love to go back and get some night rides on Renegade.

Speaking of GCI, there was another one at the next park on the tour...

Part 11 - Dollywood

Right, I'm not gonna beat around the bush here.

This was the best park on the trip. It's got such a great mix of rides, shows, food, crafts, the lot. It really showed up the rest of the big chain parks for what they were. And because it was a quiet day, we didn't need to bother with the new Q-bot, although I would seriously consider getting one next time.

The first thing we did on getting there was head straight upto Mystery Mine, which is a great experience. Coaster wise, it's a OK ride made into ssomething truely great thanks to the amazing theming. Thunderhead was also a very good ride. Not as great as Amusement Today's Ohio contingent make it out to be, but it's a lot of fun, and much better when the evening falls. And Tennessee Tornado was running like shit of a shovel! Too bad Arrow only got good at making looping coasters just before they went bankrupt.

What I really loved about Dollywood was the staff. The average age probably no lower than 50, and these folks sure know how to make your day go great. Because they're generally older citizens, people respect them much more. And they're always willing to talk with you around the park. One staff member even recognised my Anchor Bar t-shirt that I had bought 10 days on ago when I was up in Buffalo!

Originally I had not planned to include Dollywood on the itinerary, but it was either spend a day there or another at Cedar Point. I think we made the right decision.

Awesome update again, Tom. This makes me want to get up bright and early one weekend and head down to Dollywood for some hot, steamy Mine action. I miss that place.

This was one hell of a trip, man. I'm lookin' forward to the rest of the updates!

^Yeah, Dollywood is somewhere I'll certainly be going back. Next time I wouldn't mind whoring out Ober Gatlingburg and the NASCAR credit. That was closed on this occasion.

Part 12 - Holiday World...must try harder.

To be honest, this park was a bit of a let down. We had however been spoiled by how awesome Dollywood was the previous day. There's not that much to do apart from the three big woodies, and free soft drinks while nice don't make a whole park nice. There was a lot more concrete than I was expecting.

After getting the kiddy credit done and dusted, we went straight to Voyage and jumped in the back, which was a big mistake.

That thing was violent almost to breaking point. the first few hills were great, but once we got past the second tunnel, it was just painful. I can see why they've put extra brakes on the last section, it goes way too fast into some of those turns, and the ride simply can't cope with it.

We did go back for a go at the front later that day, which was much better. But on the performance I witnessed, this certainly wouldn't break my top ten. But if I get the chance to go back and ride this thing at night, I'll leave it as an open book.

After Voyage ride #1, we jumped onto Legend, which was also a mistake, because the line was ridiculous and there was only one train operation. But we got on near the front, and it was really good! We actually thought it was gonna be better than Voyage at one point, but after the second ride at the back of the train, that question was answered with an abrupt "no".

As for Raven, I really expected a lot from this ride, maybe too much. It jsut didn't do anything for me. But there was only one train going and we didn't get any night rides on this visit, so once again I'll give it another chance in a few years.

After a few short hours getting everything else done, we decided not to bother with the waterpark on this trip, and headed off for an early night. But I will give this overly hyped park and its overly hyped coasters another chance in the future.

cinci2.jpg.6aedf37751031e2dae5a9f6295088492.jpg

God knows how, it was pretty average when I rode it!

Time for Raven, apparently the one time No.1 in the world.

Not as good as the other Double Shot in Indiana!

About as American as you can get without eating a BigMac, sitting in a gas-guzzling car and shooting my own allies dead.

Drinking Mountain Dew I feel like I wanna go build something. Maybe a new section of track for the Voyage.

Nearly at the best part of the ride (the end).

legenddrop.jpg.1d706dc05189d147728ad6e2eea88882.jpg

It wasn't too bad at the front, but it just went round a lot of bends.

And part 4. Thank you for reading. The real trip report will return in a moment.

Here's some sage advice for those visually challenged enthusiasts: How Not To Wear A Glasses Strap Part 1.

I can't believe we actually waited for Legend. But still, we made our own fun.

legendlift.jpg.991db52aab4531ecf7f1a3386052ad7f.jpg

This ride and the Voyage are proof that you shouldn't let enthusiasts have a say in designing coasters.

Legend. Should have waited till the afternoon for this.

But the rest is far too physical.

The first few hills are great.

voyagelift.jpg.67c7adc1b0fe037531263d9b23331db8.jpg

As for the Voyage, I didn't think much of it.

> Is there anything you can do on this ride?

Yeah, you can wear your glasses. Still the greatest glasses policy I've ever heard of, by the way: If you wanna bring your glasses, you have to wear them.

Which reminds me: At Wild Adventures, I was once told by a Cheetah ride op that I had to remove my glasses and put them in my pocket because if they fell off and landed on the track it could cause the train to derail.

Anyway, I do like Holiday World a lot. But, yeah, I could see how a first time visitor could find it overhyped/underwhelming.

Me, I'd add a Sky Ride.

But I digress. Nice trip report!

Posted

Yes! Another person agrees with me on how overrated Voyage is. The first three hills are fun and the triple down is fun too, but I can do without the rest of the ride. RAVEN is by far the best ride in the park.

Posted
Next time I wouldn't mind whoring out Ober Gatlingburg and the NASCAR credit. That was closed on this occasion.

I've tried 3 or 4 times to get that stinkin NASCAR Speedpark credit and it's closed every time! One time it had been hit by lightning!

On the way to our next hotel, we pass through Cincinatti. It really comes out of nowhere driving from Louisville.

I know! You drive around this curve and BAM! there it be!

You know I have to say I hear ya loud and clear on Holiday World. Their coasters seem to run best at night and when you can catch them on a good day.

My first trip in 2005, I thought Raven was just kinda ok. Then last year it was amazing, especially at night. But I still don't see why it got voted #1 for all those years.

Voyage is my #1, but I try to avoid the back. The front or anywhere towards the front is great, especially at night. It's just too much of a good thing in a lot of ways. But I haven't been on it since they added the trim.

Posted

Well, because there wasn't much competition. Raven was one of the first full-sized CCI's, GCI didn't exist yet, and Intamin wasn't building wood. So, you basically had lots of old school woodies (some of which were and are quite fun, of course) and Summers-Dinn stuff.

Eliminate all Intamin, CGI, and most CCI/Gravity Group coasters except for Raven from your top ten list and then see how it does. It still might not be your number one, but it would be for a lot of folks. (Especially folks in the industry, who might tend to want to emphasize new over "classic.")

^And might I also add that "No.1 coaster" was as rated by Amusement Today, where the electoral roll appears to only come from inside the Midwest.

Part 13 - Kings Island. Well at least it's not Darien Lake.

Let's get it over with.

This park is much on the same vein as most of the Cedar Fair chain, pretty bland. Not even some pretty good operations an Eiffel Tower model can change that.

The coasters are nothing to shout out. None of the woodies we rode were that good, in fact the kiddie wooden was the best out of all of them. And none of this "wheel seat crap". What's that point in going on a ride when only 5 of the rows aren't gonna leave you battered and bruised?

The best coaster is a second hand Vekoma Flyer from Geauga Lake, and even that isn't worth that much of a wait.

Granted that Drop Zone is very good, but it would be even better if the whole area around wasn't a sea of concrete.

And the worst bit? I've got to come back sometime for a ride Son of Beast.

Oh well, it could be worse. Could be a hell of a lot better though.

trashcan.jpg.f05b5690f475555cdbae08a396541f79.jpg

PS - Wes, this one's for you.

Hmm, hot leg action.

firehawktransfer.jpg.15f6edd6d1d38c8a921c8b83511bbd72.jpg

And this is the track that caused all the trouble earlier.

firehawk3.jpg.ca38e1c218c5c5bdfd013684463c097b.jpg

Does such a creature actually exist, or was it just supposed to be a catchy name?

firehawk2.jpg.1ce513baa27946023b385f29f953211a.jpg

Whilst waiting in line, we thought of something. What the hell is a Firehawk?

firehawk1.jpg.79c87ddb7138837e9c79e4c23288de98.jpg

X-Flight in disguise makes a pass.

firehawk4.jpg.f406a534dc8625fb59f9cdf4294517e4.jpg

firehawksign.jpg.9730548150db1574973af2958e7133ad.jpg

firehawkmechanic.jpg.2e0b28d04102a66a8efcce9316d21fff.jpg

Firehawk mechanics had to fix the transfer track.

I lied again. Here's a photo in case you forgot what day it was.

Giant Frisbee is proof that size is meaningless if the ride sucks.

SOBnewtrack.jpg.a9e632a97323e2a1de39af87b2762303.jpg

Well it's not exactly hard.

SOBlayout.jpg.3223d51a3eeec97b47e5ec39ad5e2cc1.jpg

And now, it's time to play spot the new track!

dropzone5.jpg.2e19a1cf702e54cee0fd96d9f31050b6.jpg

Nice view.

dropzone4.jpg.40edc95e3b908181156cf1487ced0906.jpg

I like this ride so much, it's getting its own full photo from the tower.

actionzone.jpg.cec9742485fff84309fcac02a302bd5c.jpg

Then we remembered the view from the other side of the tower.

eiffeldown.jpg.1701fbb37287d5f2b736f62bd462881c.jpg

And we did think about it at one point.

ianonthetower.jpg.3875e07b9c3fd600e85b6967c77fec2b.jpg

Ian got pretty depressed.

racerlayout.jpg.59e0c56cd08547a641ba8db4b0d42ec0.jpg

It's _hite (fill in the blank).

FIREHAWKANDRACER.jpg.fb72b44000345eb39f1f233bb10be219.jpg

Here's a token two-train shot. Firehawk is sitting there broken, and I wish Racer would.

This part of the ride was cool.

See, I told you.

Here's an awesome Parking Lot coaster.

Parking Lot: The Ride beats Face/Off hands down.

parkinglot.jpg.1cd611fa10a556a01a893b212980308f.jpg

I tell a lie, this is the nicest part of the park! Even if you have paid $10 just to get on it.

kidsarea.jpg.f6a2950c139184b0176e5151624e3d41.jpg

And here's the second nicest part of the park.

advexpresslayout.jpg.a323b11f6b0ee04527fe2c44a2d8452b.jpg

There's an Arrow down there somwhere.

And here's some never before seen photos.

parkentrance.jpg.62a9b2d3bf1443945da02cd0721a32aa.jpg

Like I said, prettiest part of the park.

eiffeltowerlift.jpg.6857dbbadf679e1b623bf5821e074271.jpg

Time to go up high and see what we don't have to do ever again!

Doesn't matter which side you sit on. It's just as bad on either. And once again, mention wheel seats and you die.

coneymallsign.jpg.4ce6f9999d577094951787fa9fdd6c03.jpg

Back to Coney "Where the hell is the" Mall for another great ride...

I'd love to say this was the biggest waste of wood since the Three Little Pigs. I guess I'll have to find out another time.

sobentryclosed.jpg.e48c9764e7a718c88a48f02ddd76ffa5.jpg

What a shame. Now I'll have to come back here again.

topguntrain.jpg.55df0d24eae4d368a0bbb705ef44c391.jpg

Top Gun is almost as old as the last really good Tom Cruise film.

topgunlayout.jpg.8c3b5332da1377dc341f5e82365b3d60.jpg

Same layout as Vortex at Canada's Wonderland, but without the plastic mountain!

topgunsign.jpg.8fe093ace81340a8ebab8d26b256143e.jpg

My word, it's two good rides in a row!

dropzone2.jpg.2b6ad96ca1dd620bc252daf9bff3625d.jpg

Intamin comes to save the day again.

dropzone3.jpg.ee3dce3ae92b5dafdc7767e29af3d476.jpg

Drop Zone really is an oasis in a desert of concrete.

dropzone.jpg.a36757aadcf7dd387c6d788c73d9cf5f.jpg

I guess we had to find a good ride sometime.

faceoff1.jpg.562b3823ca8996617e68f95d6c262e58.jpg

And speaking of having your face smashed in, here you go!

faceoff3.jpg.9da3bfaec1144792a7ace2852d6cce76.jpg

The best thing about this ride was teaching the line jumpers some manners. It was a case of "Push past me and I'll do to you what Face/Off will do to you when you ride it". But not quite as nerdy.

faceoff2.jpg.c47f4d265be5f10e8ba68ef8d3b2afa2.jpg

It didn't exactly make up for Deja Vu being broken.

faceoffsign.jpg.5258cebdcab1f258e46a7d5c153586bd.jpg

littlebilltom.jpg.0b150929744543a1a8bea4178b70c4b7.jpg

And here's me whoring myself to the world.

littlebillian.jpg.b53417278d56629757317bfc5e6b80a0.jpg

But nevertheless, we found a couple. Here's Ian waiting for his ride.

littlebillsign.jpg.40f40822b9cadb3b6590d8b1371dcb22.jpg

As you can see, we needed a kid. Maybe I should sue for height discrimination.

littlebill.jpg.fbd561b1bc8cf7d7d4edba2a4b7c6c1f.jpg

Normally this would be a low point, but after a day at Kings Island, I just didn't care.

fairlyoddpinktrain.jpg.9fa0ac4385ae3d3060ee0d6f513f6399.jpg

Smile, you're on camera! Now stop stacking and dispatch so I can get this park done!

fairlyodd.jpg.a8825c75c5112047d3e7ac2fa4486707.jpg

Fairly Odd Coaster is fairly odd, because it's probably one of the better coasters in the whole park...no, make that the whole damn state!

fairyworldsign.jpg.13f4ab4e89928c5ad15e94e20b73a4e1.jpg

Here's another contender for Gayest Photo in the whole report.

avatar2.jpg.0422f5903a64038bf8c9470460ce119d.jpg

avatar1.jpg.bddf60654e255f9ed5728995d2875b88.jpg

NOT a credit.

reptar3.jpg.165bb82482925efc8db5c5ea954f51b4.jpg

Reptar just scarred this kid for life.

reptar1.jpg.0bf29eb0ded91bc3bb95162f7ffb87e3.jpg

Even the kiddy coasters are rough!

tombraier.jpg.3a298dc63d904ab2f196f983f861ba52.jpg

Cool effect, nut busting restraints, rubbish cycle. Well at least I've done it. And now I won't need to ever again!

beastplaque.jpg.37a31cff28deb485ceebb2c550ae2ded.jpg

The kiss of death for any ride.

beastsign.jpg.14862d55c96b7c4af6edb8d5ec7b7757.jpg

vortexboomerang.jpg.4a879661b5f2bd4499c546c0f5941e19.jpg

At least you're near the end of the ride here.

vortexloops.jpg.175c2796e1e85218f35b57f7dd437022.jpg

Double dose for Derek.

vortex1.jpg.4933a59cf91f06f30a9a1a6273652b0b.jpg

This would have been great back in '86. But it's not '86, it's 2007.

vortexsign.jpg.1e4530fafa19be3d9ee8eb76eafd1183.jpg

And now, another awesome ride!

italianjoblaunch.jpg.0275406f378aa66f83550d14d7eb94cc.jpg

They still can't get the Minis in the right order. And the ride would be so much better if it was "The" Italian Job, not the new version of the classic.

italianjoblicenseplate.jpg.84ad84827c6a52d9c40d7d928d0d36e1.jpg

I wish I had this license plate when we were driving.

italianjobtrains.jpg.c1d66a584fe10406e439eebb2bf6db51.jpg

italianjobtrains2.jpg.6a2c8aa5ab36a6c10c42eab57477a0ca.jpg

The ride does get the award for "Coolest Looking Trains".

italianjobposter.jpg.7958c32268b5a34fd8e94e903de1e377.jpg

They should raelly call this ride "Italian Job: The Remake which can't hold a candle to the original".

fonzian.jpg.003d4960085bce4f017c4d566d6f97ff.jpg

Happy Days at Kings Island. One of the better oxymorons we saw.

FOFLaunch.jpg.967f657e203ef92834d57dc41b141dff.jpg

We went straight on to Flight of Fear. A OK ride with no line!

firehawkline2.jpg.a9ca755c58f45fdc6729209c2a902f81.jpg

Ian can't believe it either.

firehawkline.jpg.7c83ed012e55e606cecddc0985e55674.jpg

Look at all these tools waiting for Firehawk to open.

eiffeltower1.jpg.b0a08e766cf2a429a92a7916b952e3b4.jpg

Here's what you see when you come in. Probably the nicest part of the park.

What the hell is a Firehawk?

They had to complete the Ohio trifecta somehow...

"CAN YOU SURVIVE THE SKYHAWK, THUNDERHAWK, AND FIREHAWK!?" (said in a towering voice from that movie trailer guy)

So much animosity towards Kings Island! And I'm no fanboy! Or am I? I guess I just have an appreciation for the place because it's been my home park pretty much my entire life. It has sorta gone downhill. It's too bad you didn't have a better time, Tom. At one time, those rides were all somewhat smooth and a lot of fun! As always, great TR with some freakin' sweet pics. Keep them comin'!

Posted

Oh, great... it wasn't bad enough having all the same trash can design. Now Cedar Point's green-with-red-flag font style shows up at KI!

Well, nice to see you tried to make the most of the park. Can't say I've ever been, but this is slightly unencouraging.

Posted

I think I was one of the few people on the TPR Midwest trip that actually enjoyed Vortex. Sure it was old, but I thought it was one of the better coasters in the park. What should they do with these old coasters that can still be a fun ride? I say keep them going.

I guess you know a park is bad when they have to take out a top coaster from another park and move it there. Oh, I actually liked Firehawk more than Superman at SFGA. Much better ride.

To all those waiting in line for Firehawk, let the employees know you are a single rider and you can usually get on in 5-10 minutes.

Posted

I agree completely with your comment about "wheel seats," Tom. I also get sick of enthusiasts saying, "It's a great ride--you just have to know how to brace yourself."

If you need a survival manual just to ride a coaster without getting the crap knocked out of you, it's time to replace that coaster.

Posted

Well Tom it must be a CF thing, cause Thunder Road (Carowinds racer) has gone from decent, to beat the crap out of you unless you're on on a wheel.

Love the report though.

I pretty much thought KI sucked last time I was there as well and I loved it in 99, but maybe I just hadn't been to enough decent parks yet.

Unfortunatly I'll have to go back at some point and get the Firechicken/Xflight credit since I never got it.
