RabidMonkey
Maybe Six Flags Magic Mountain wants to focus on improving the park as a whole before it puts in another attraction. Just because you want your semi-annual fix of new coaster doesn't mean that Six Flags will listen. Sometimes, you have to take a step backward before going further forward. I'm fine with a drop tower or whatever they have in mind. I'd like another coaster but don't really need another coaster to be a replacement. Still I don't understand why they'd make a big deal of having 18 just to lower their number back down to 17.

I hope they do spruce up the park a bit. As awesome as a new "top-shelf-never-been-done-before-ultra-mega-only-here-at-SFMM" coaster would be, I was not too impressed with the atmosphere of the park when I went. To me it seemed like a coaster haven with the minimum essential GP and family pleasers thrown in. As a coaster entusiast I wouldn't mind if it was a chunk of land with a bunch of coasters, I'd still be happy. But as I grow older I'm finding I enjoy walking around a park and taking in the atmosphere and snapping pictures of things other than coasters. There is a lot of buildings that could use some loving and some areas they've done a good job with upgrading. DC universe was great but I thought it could use a tree or two in the main area. daveydo5172
I dont know why everyone keeps harping on this "they made a big deal out of having 18 coasters" crap...who cares? I paid just as much attention as everyone else did, and yeah, they mentioned it, but I wouldnt say they made THAT big of a deal about it...again, who cares? Its obvious they have something planned, and more than likely its something big...you all are just beating a dead horse with that....I am sure this Deja Vu plan has been in the works for some time....even before they started bragging about having the most coasters....even though it is SFI(and SFMM) I am pretty sure there plans have been well thought out! SharkTums
And realistically, SFMM and CP are both still 'regional parks'. When you go to CP everyone thinks they have the most coasters there, when you go to SFMM everyone thinks they're the king. As much as the two parks 'compete', they really don't to the average guest. daveydo5172
^What about the Tilt a Whirl!!! BRING BACK THE TILT A WHIRL!!!!! Better yet, since SFNE will have 2 boomerangs next to each other, then Magic Mountain needs to recover whats left of the Batman/Shockwave Stand Up coaster that use to be at SFMM and return it to its rightful spot.....Two Stand Ups is what the park needs! daveydo5172
^^^Exactly, with the exception of the roller coaster fanatics out there, I guarantee you MOST of SFMM guests probably havent even heard of Cedar Point....and knowing the school system in LA, they probably couldn't even tell you were Ohio is! You're in Vegas so you probably didn't see as many SFMM advertisements. Right around April every commercial pretty much mentioned "most coasters on the planet" and they had bold words on the screen to make that statement more clear. I didn't really care, numbers are just numbers and I don't think having one more than CP is that big of a deal but they hyped it up more than they needed to. Sir Clinksalot
Question for you SFMM fans: Scenario 1: A new $20-$25 million coaster, you pick. B&M Dive Machine, Hyper, Mega-Lite, etc. Scenario 2: $20-$25 million worth of "capitol improvements" including a drop tower type ride (maybe even Maliboomer relocated), some flat/family style rides, and an investment in park beautification. May even include Big Spin from SFDK. Which one would you pick? Edited August 23, 2011 by Sir Clinksalot
DJeXeL
^^^^Wait...........Ohio is a state? All joking aside I'd rather them not add coasters for 3 or 4 years and fix up the park. It's not trashed by any means but there's small nagging issues like S:EFK's queue smelling like a sewer for starters. daveydo5172
I still would love to see a revamp of all those buildings back there in the Cyclone Bay area as well...a new Coaster would liven up that spot, but you still have all of those old patched up arcade/gift shop/ice cream buildings that really need a face lift! I would pick the improvements....I am under the philosophy that you dont need a major new attraction to bring in more guests, but that you can do it by improving the quality upon what already exists. I worked on the 1 Billion dollar expansion of the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, which didnt include a typical vegas "gimmick" attraction but did include two new hotel towers and a total revamp and renovation of the original casino itself. Now they did build a brand new concert hall as well, but the increase traffic they are getting is mostly due to the sprucing up and general improvements of the hotel itself. DJeXeL
^Quoted for truth. The park could be such a gold mine.
John Knotts
I like what SFMM has been doing. Taking faded coasters and amping them up to better standards. I hope that trend continues with Colossus and eventually Viper. I'll take that over a new coaster any day.
Jew
^^^That's not a fair comparison at all. What the Hard Rock Hotel did was the equivalent of building a mega coaster. They built two brand new, modern hotel towers. That's far from just an overhaul. I would pick the mega coaster any day. SFMM is never going to be a nice park. They should just stick to what their niche is in the market: coasters.
DJeXeL
SFMM is never going to be a nice park. QFT Sad however. There's so much more the park could be but you're right it will never be "nice." It will always be just.......there.
PAL
It *was* a nice park in the early years, but those days are long gone. It's a thrill park now, that's its market niche, the category in which they dominate the local competition. If that $25 million would bring air to California, I say go for it. Saber
^^ Very sad, but I do like to keep hope. Maybe an investment in refurbishing a lot of the buildings and infrastructure would pay off in the long run, but would they regain the GP just because the park looks nicer and is a much better place to go to? The problem with the GP is that this park mainly caters to only one group of people: thrill seekers. Try as hard as you want in the family department, but I just don't think they can get over the fact that what's already installed is an adrenaline junkie haven. Most people still regard this park as a dump, but even with everything looking "that" much nicer, the rides will forever and always draw teens/young adults looking to ride the giant roller coaster. As much as I'd love to see this park looking nice, the family department will never compete with what's already at Disneyland/KBF. Give me a few years and then I'll be begging for that mega-coaster. daveydo5172
I respectfully disagree...I think its a perfect comparison...Las Vegas hotels built major attractions to bring in crowds for 20 years...the Volcano, the Pirate show, etc...those were there "roller coasters" they brought the crowds in off the street to "play in their park"...vegas crowds never cared about that a hotel built a new tower.....no one went to the new Caesars Palace because they built one of their 3 brand new towers in the 1990's - 2000's...they went because of the expansions to the Forum Shops.....the same is said for the HR expansion...the general public is not staying there at the hotel, but coming in from other hotels as well, to play inside the new revamped casino....they updated everything as well as gave it a fresh, 20-something feel, and thats bringing in the increased attendance. Now, yes you argue that there revamp was there "new attraction", but you can also argue that they didnt need any new spiffy, glitzy over the top attraction to attract guests as well. Jew
Don't really want to drag this debate out, but when you spend $750 million dollars to "revamp" the property (and get pushed to the brink of foreclosure in doing so), I think that qualifies as more than just cleaning the place up. The casino only generates about 30% of the hotel's revenue because people go there to party and eat and see concerts. Those people want fancy new rooms, not a cleaned up (still very tiny) casino. But we're talking about two entirely different things. SFMM already failed trying to push itself as a "family" park under Jay Thomas. They need to stick to what they are good at...marketing roller coasters.

Sir Clinksalot
^ I agree with Joey here, Apples and Oranges. And yes, I don't ever see SFMM going back from it's "Thrill Park" roots, and becoming a Family Park. That being said, it doesn't mean they can't throw in some cool flat rides (Frisbee, Tilt a Whirl, etc) and clean the place up a bit. I'd LOVE to see a Giant Frisbee somewhere in the park. harper83087
^Agreed, I think some S&S or Huss would do them wonders. Throw in a Huss "Land of the Giants" and life would be grand .
