Lagoon Discussion Thread

^ Besides the normal off season maintenance, another 1/4 of West Curve has been rebuilt from the Footings Up. 90% of the Ride will have the Footings Tied together in 2016, so she should survive the Big One pretty well. -

Actually, the Track and Uprights/Columns are pretty much the same color as Maverick at Cedar Point. The Dark Brown Columns with the Yellow are themed. That is the tunnel that goes 20ft Underground. Lagoon had to get the track in before installing the lid. This is the First Major Steel Coaster since Space Mountain in 1978 to be Designed, Engineered, and Constructed by a park it's self. Cannibal is on Schedule for an Opening Day 2015 Debut. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

Why would a park like Cedar Point get a Base Frame Coaster when they could get a MACK Park Model? I guess because they work with Zamperla more than Mack. I thought about that after I posted.... On second thought maybe a Gerstlauer. Like Spinning Dragons at WOF. I wouldn't say that, considering Pipe Scream is the First New Ride from Zamplerla since Camp Snoopy was built in 1999. Cedar Fair also has 4 MACK Wild Mouse Coasters in the Chain, plus the New for 2013 Coast Rider at Knott's. Manufacturers are usually selected based on the Ride Experience they want to Provide and the Cost of that Ride and associated Maintenance Costs. -

Maybe a Mack Spinning Coaster? Good Capacity and fills the new family coaster that Cedar Point has removed lately. Zamperla Wild Mouse is my guess. Why would a park like Cedar Point get a Base Frame Coaster when they could get a MACK Park Model? -
Schwarzkopfs were built pretty well and there are several Schwarzkofs that are going on 40+ years operating. I mean, there’s a big difference between BGT and Lagoon, but Jet Star 2 is going on 42 years (40 at Lagoon) and Fire Dragon going on 33 years (31 at Lagoon). I mean, sure, Lagoon has had to do a crap ton of work to keep Jet Star 2 operating safely, like fabricating stronger wheel housings, replacing the anti rollback system, fabricating new track, reinforcing the track and uprights, new PLC, new loading station, and the constant welding, but for them it’s worth it. Likewise Fire Dragon has had to have some work done on the uprights and track, but nothing major, and the trains are still in great condition. BGT could keep Scorpion operating for quite a few more years easily.

Premier may be Based in Maryland, but Intermountain Lift, Inc., who Fabricates their Track and Columns, is in Utah. Kinda funny how Intermountain Lift Fabricated Blue Track for Sky Rocket and BomBora at the same time and now they are Fabricating Red Track for Lagoon and Premier at the Same Time. -

Wicked has a Vertical Launch. Cannibal will have an Elevator Lift much like those used by MACK, Intamin, etc. -

Given that we know very little intrinsically about the ride, this is naturally the intelligent course of action. Thanks for your contribution. If you read through my posts, you'll see that I rarely speculate on a ride before it opens but to me it just seems like they're cutting costs in every way possible and yes... I think this will be reflected in the final product. People keep bringing up Bombora but designing a family coaster in house and designing a 200+ foot coaster in house are two totally different things. Steel Force, Mamba and Wild Thing (all 200 foot coasters) all cost exactly the same amount of money and they were built back in the mid 1990's. I know those will probably end up with longer track lengths, but it's hard to be overly confident when it's the same price as hypercoasters built 20 years earlier and less than half the price of your average modern 200 foot coaster. Bombora and even Wicked are basically products of the same system, albeit with fabrication done in different places. Both are very good rides. Since Lagoon doesn't need to make a profit off of constructing this ride, their end costs have a great likelihood to be lower. They are in the rare situation of having a creative engineer who can design these sorts of attractions working for them, which is something the overwhelming majority of amusement and theme parks lack. As I said previously, we have very little info about what the end product is going to resemble or do other than some rumor filled posts on the internet. So to say that it is "a foregone conclusion that is going to suck" is premature at best, and at worst a product of the internet's demand to have people with shocking levels of ignorance demand to be heard in the loudest possible way. It must be the offseason if we're so bored that we keep going back and fourth on this. lol. It's obvious that what I'm saying is blatant speculation based on the information about how the ride is being built, but without speculation we would have nothing to talk about on a coaster message board all winter. I always do my best to keep it to a minimum but when I hear about a ride being designed for a ridiculously low cost by someone in house, it's hard for me not to speculate... even with very little additional information. We can agree to disagree on this one, if construction goes smoothly and the ride is great then I'll owe you an apology, but I don't think this is going to be the case. That's just my personal opinion. The Cost of Cannibal will be above 10 Million Dollars and Lagoon is not cutting costs anywhere. I don't see how Lagoon's construction methods could be called into question. Dal Freeman also isn't just "someone." Ron Toomer AND Dal Freeman Designed Magnum XL-200 and Dal is Responsible for many other Coasters built by Arrow through the 90s. Wicked was Dal Freeman's Concept and Design, but Lagoon needed a Partner to make it happen, which is where Zierer came into the Picture. After the problems with the Weldments on the Columns/Uprights, and seeing Zierer just Subcontracted everything, it became Clear that Lagoon was entirely capable of building a coaster on their own. After looking at Zierer, MACK, Vekoma, Gerstlauer, etc. Family Coasters, they couldn't find something that had everything they wanted. Dal came up with a Great Design and Layout for a Family Coaster and also Designed the Trains and Restraints. Lagoon Contracted with Intermountain Lift, Inc. to Fabricate the Track and Columns, Stakotra Manufacturing for the Trains, Actemium for the PLC/Safety System, and Zierer for the Lift and Drives. Lagoon built the Deep Foundation and Piers, and Errected the Ride themselves. What Lagoon got was a well built Exciting and Dynamic Family Coaster with a 36" Minimum Height Requirement, Comfortable Seats and Lap Bar Restraints, On Board Audio and Lighting, all for 5 Million Dollars. Having the complete control over every aspect of the ride allowed them to deliver the Experience they wanted. BomBora has Performed Excellently and has one of the best Up Times in the Park. For Cannibal, Lagoon has Driven the Piles for the Deep Foundation, Poured some of the Foundation and Piers, and Constructed a 30ft Deep Tunnel up to this Point, without any help from outside contractors. Utah also has Several Heavy Industry and Mining Equipment Manufacturing Companies that are more than Capable of building an Elevator that can Lift a Train or Trains to the top of a nearly 200ft Tower. I also updated the first post in the 2015 Project Threat on LagoonisFun.com to clarify some things. -

Magnum XL-200 and most of Dal Freeman's other coasters he designed while at Arrow worked out pretty well, not to Mention Rattlesnake Rapids, Wicked, and BomBora at Lagoon. Since Lagoon is working mostly with the same suppliers for BomBora as Cannibal, and specifically Actemium and Intermountain Lift, who have worked in heavy industry, including Mining, I'm not worried at all. Also, Air Race at Lagoon is pretty Nuckin Futs, except when the damn planes need to be reset and require complete reprogramming. lol -

The Track Length and Height hasn't exactly been confirmed, but it will be Lagoon's Longest, Tallest, and Fastest Roller Coaster. Wicked has 6 Trains but only uses 5 at a time and loads two trains at a time. Cannibal's Trains will be very similar to Wickeds, but may have a 3rd Row to carry 12 persons instead of 8. -
Yeah, but they have placed the last car of the train right after the first car (see the themed wheels) which is something they don't usually do. Top Thrill Dragster opened missing a Car. The Train looks like those used on the Blitz Coasters, with the Smaller Diameter Road Wheels on the Front, so I'm willing to bet it will be 3 Car Train(s) like Maverick and iSpeed.

The Zamperla/Soriani Suspended Windshear comes in 22, 36, and 40 Passenger Versions. I'm sure they could Manufacture a 32 Passenger Model, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. If the Press Release is 100% Correct, it is not a Huss Top Spin, which seats 40, not 32 like The Demon. -

I take it this is a Moser Maverick with Asymmetric Arms? -
Lagoon had to Neuter the Ride Cycles on Samurai (Mondial Top Scan) and Cliffhanger (Mondial Splashover) after problems with the Motors over heating. After a Gearbox Failure on Samurai in 2008 that Closed the ride for most of the Season, Lagoon further neutered the Cycles. Still a great ride, but no where near as wild as it once was. Cliffhanger got 2 New Motors after both gearboxes failed during preseason 2003 and then again in 2012. All the problems stem from Lagoon wanting both rides to have AC Motors instead of the Standard DC Motors. After consulting with Canada's Wonderland, Cliffhanger seems to be operating with much less downtime now.

Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
linearinduction replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The Ad States it is a "Brand New" Unit with Brass Trim. CPH #373 at Holiday World has Chrome Trim. It is possible that Holiday World was just Leasing #373 for this Season and could purchase a Unit Built Specifically for them for 2014. Since the advertised unit has the same paint job, it would make sense for Chance to use #373 as the Photo. This might sound crazy, but maybe the park found a way to fix the Freedom Train? That ride means a lot to Holiday World, because it was the only original ride left from Santa Claus Land. Anyone know if the Freedom Train was put on Static Display or what Gauge the Freedom Train was? Holiday World had to rebuild the roadbed and install new ties and track to operate the CPH. That was not cheap and it sounded like Holiday World was quite happy with their CPH. Perhaps Paula could clear things up. -

Parks Creating Rides In-house
linearinduction replied to Garet's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Along the lines of what Robb said, Lagoon started looking around for a Compact Launched Coaster and couldn't find one they liked or was within their budget. Since the Park's Engineer, Dal Freeman, used to work in Arrow Dynamics as an Engineer, he developed the concept and design that became Wicked. Instead of tackling the entire Project by themselves, they enlisted Zierer. In the case of BomBora, Lagoon was looking around for a Family Coaster that offered a little more and decided to have Dal Freeman Design and Engineer the Ride. Lagoon's new "Mega Coaster" is already under construction and is being built in the same fashion as BomBora. BomBora Manufacturer: Lagoon Corporation Designer: Dal Freeman (and Lagoon's Engineering Department) Construction: Lagoon Corporation Uprights and Track: Intermountain Lift, Inc. Trains, Lift, Brakes, etc.: ART Engineering GmbH Controls and Safety System: Actemium Controlmatic GmbH -
A lot of Ride Manufacturers have started designing rides with disabled riders in mind. For Example, OdySea (Zierer), Jumping Dragon (Zierer), Air Race (Zamperla), and Tipsey Tea Cups (Zamperla), at Lagoon, all have sections of the Ride Vehicle that can be unlocked and lifted out allowing someone to slide right into the seat. - Sid
