Quantum of Solace (Bond 22) Discussion Thread
pagemaster_b replied to RIP Psyclone's topic in Random, Random, Random
That's not exactly true. "Diamonds are Forever" is more a sequel to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" as that it picks up shortly after Bond's wife is killed. A lot of people don't realize that because that's when Sean Connery was Bond again after George Lazenby's one time stint. But I'm splitting hairs here. In the sense that the new Bond film is directly related to "Casino Royale" then you are correct that it is the first "true" sequel. However, I don't believe that is the way to go. One of the appealing factors of the Bond movies, is that you don't need to see the others to know what's going on. (And when a bad Bond film comes along, like "Die Another Day", you can easily forget about it.) This non-connectivity amongst the movies is what has allowed it to be so popular and allow for other actors to play the role without any problems. You start making a congruent timeline, and you'll just end up making a mess. Oh, and my order of Bonds: 1. Sean Connery 2. Pierce Bronson 3. Roger Moore 4. Daniel Craig 5. Timothy Dalton 6. George Lazenby -

I don't know, but I look like I'm posing for you here. Sucking in the gut, puffing out the chest. What the hell was I smoking? I didn't even notice until somebody pointed it out. Was that you, Lou?

Silverwood Discussion Thread
pagemaster_b replied to Damien666's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Silverwood needs a good steel coaster, not these crappy hand-me-downs. It's got some damn good woodies, but that's it. If they're going to acquire old steel coasters, they should get something like a Batman clone or something on that level. Come to think of it, when Astroworld closed down, how come they didn't acquire any of those coasters? I've been there once, and a crappy Deja Vu clone is not enough to bring me back. -
How many ways can you kill a snowman?
pagemaster_b replied to Tanks4me05's topic in Random, Random, Random
Strongly recommend you read the "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip. All the wild snowmen he makes is frickin hilarious and should give you a few ideas. (One of my favorites is a snowman on the ground with an ice cream scoop in the back and holes missing, and other snowman walking away with a snowcone in its hands.) And BeemerBoy, "C-4" is my line! -
Somehow, I missed that. However, there were all those annoying breaks a tape has, so I don't know. I think my problem about the military issues is that I spent a year in Afghanistan working in the task force operations center and working with aviation assets (helicopters, planes), so I think that is jading my opinion quite a bit. You know, I do read and watch a lot of scifi and fantasy, so I should probably watch what I say. And I did say that I have taken creative liberties with the military when writing stories. My agument still stands that they can still be as realistic as possible despite the fantastical situation. More like Air Force--they're the worst pilots I have ever seen.

Thank you for making me gag. What would TPR be like if Ryan King was a mod? -
I've done a few long road trips (like from Oregon to Idaho to Utah to Nevada to Cailfornia back to Oregon again). Eight hours for driving is a decent time, though for me tweleve hours is usually what I will drive in a day. You'll just have to find what works with you. The best advice is take frequent breaks. You should be stopping about every two hours to get out to stretch and walk around. This should help with fatigue and sleepiness. It is recommended to not use caffinee to help stay awake. Whenever you feel sleepy, you should pull into a Rest Area and take a nap. Snacks or munchies are also a good thing. Music is a must. I hate surfing for radio stations every couple hundred miles, and they're really hard to find in sparely populated rural areas. If you have an ipod or an mp3 player you can run through your radio, create a huge play list. I have four play lists on my ipod that have between 100 and 150 songs a piece (and another all encompassing play list clocking in at over 850 songs). Avoid the mellow, relaxing type music and play upbeat songs you can sing along too. Audio books are a good alternative to music. They can certainly help pass the time, but I have found that it can distract my concentration on driving. Other things you should consider. Have an emergency road side kit in the back of your car. You never know when something might happen. Call someone you know before you start driving for the day and when you get to a stopping destination at the end of the day. Keep them updated on delays. This is strongly recommend during times of bad weather. (I do this with my family whenever I drive out to visit them. If I don't check in, then they know something has happened.) Take a calling card with you(even if it's prepaid). Cell phones are handy, but not all areas have coverage. A lot of this is based on experiences with my family and long trips. We've had car problems, accidents, weather delays, etc. Hopefully this will help. (Sorry, don't know anything about where you're going.)

These days, you have to be careful where you say that. Downtown Bagdad is probably not the best place in the world. Of course, since I'm a Combat Engineer in the Army, I do like blowing things up--including cars. Miles, I didn't know that OMD had a reunion tour. Then again, I did spend half of 2007 in Afghanistan. Did you go and was it any good? I liked some of their music when I was a kid. I remember going to a Jets concert when the came to the Oregon State Fair one year. Honestly, the only song I can remember by them is the Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers theme song. How pathetic is that?

While I enjoyed watching the movie, I thought the video camera approach should not have been the way to go. It worked in a few places (like the attack in the subway), but was a complete hinderment in others. The people did not act naturally as you would in a home video. Everything felt wooden, forced, and often self-absorbed. (That whole party scene at the beginning was tedious, boring, poorly acted, and worse, all around pointless.) I did like how little of the monster you actually see. Something horror flicks are so lacking these days is the lack of imagination on the audience part. With so many questions left unanswered in the movie, we can only speculate and imagine--which will be worse than anything they could have done on the screen. (People still think twice about a flock of birds after watching "The Birds".) Only showing various different parts of the monster really gave it the feel of just how huge that beast was. I also got a kick out of the DOD watermark at the beginning and end, as well as the little intro. It was a nice touch that reminded me very much of the book "Andromeda Strain". There were still some other quirks that really bothered me, especially when you start thinking about it. Tape length and battery life. Anybody who has video cameras know that tapes are approx 60 minutes. Just because the battery says "five hours" doesn't not mean you'll get anywhere near that. Using all the features (as they were doing), the battery should have gone out after an hour and a half of use. Subject of the military and cameras. Once they walked into that makeshift operations room, the camera would immediately be confiscated. No ands, ifs, or buts. Period. End of discussion. I'm speaking on experience and knowledge. (This is one of the major points why they should not have used the handheld camera viewpoint for this movie.) They lost huge authenticity and believeability here. One other plot/character point that bothered me was when they were loading onto the aircraft. The injured girl would and should have got on first available helicopter, not her friend. With the way the movie ends, it's understandable why it didn't happen that way, but still, it is not justifiable, and all around stupid, and certainly doesn't feel natural. Besides, the military personnel would be pushing the greater injured first. Oh and that helicopter crash, no one would have survived. I know, it sounds like I didn't enjoy the movie. Despite that I really don't like the whole jerky camera action that's popular right now, it was still worth the nine bucks I paid to watch it. And yes, my military experience has certainly jaded their recreations. I admit to taking some creative liberties as needed to suit a story I'm writing, but I keep it as minor as possible.

Congrats and Good Luck. Needless to say, I am jealous. (Note to self: FINISH WHAT YOU START WRITING!!!) Honestly, despite all the good things I've heard about the movie, it really hasn't pisqued my interest. Looks like I need to reconsider waiting for the DVD release. -
Final Jeopardy music playing in the background I like how "tomorrow" is in quotation marks.

Hold up a sign that says, "I ________ on the first date." (Fill in the blank with the worst sexual connotation you can think up.) If roses are red and violets are blue, then what color are pansies and daisies? -
Yes, during my Senior year. Some dumba$$ turned in front of me and I hit him going approx 50 mph. The worst part about it, my dad had to drive my car earlier that day and he cursed an accident on it. Gee, thanks Dad. Do you watch any of mixed martial arts fights?

DUH!!! Do you even need to ask that question?

I know for sure that on Monday I went to the science museum with my brother and his kids. I don't recall where I went on Tuesday, but I am thinking that was the one of the days I spent at Disney (I had a three day parkhopper). Or was that the day I went to Universal Studios? I can't seem to remember.

Lou, I think it's funny that I was in SoCal at the same time as you visiting my brother in Santa Clarita (over the hill from the Alveys) and visiting the same parks. I'm surprised we didn't bump into each other! Of course, I wouldn't have recognized you and you didn't know what I looked like before the Japan trip. (I thought I saw Chris on one of those nights at Disneyland, but I'm not sure.)

This reminds me of the Saturday Night Live sketch with Christan Slater, sometime during the early 90s. He had to work so hard to get the Super Hot wings (sign waivers, etc.) only to get his head blown up by the Hot wings. I, on the other hand, will most definately stay away from those wings!

Yes, I'm guilty. Still love the old Tom and Jerry cartoons, Animaniacs is always a blast to watch, Stewie and Brian in Family Guy rocks, and I just can't get enough of Anime! Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy was he?
