Dollywood Discussion Thread
larrygator replied to crispy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The advertising schedule is usually non-cancellable too close to the air date. When events like this happen, there are four possible outcomes. One - the ad agency contacts the station and says don't run the ad, but still pays the station. The station runs makegoods for another advertisers or a public service announcement. The station still sometimes runs the wrong ad Two - the ad agency contacts the station and sends a contingency ad with instructions to run the contingency ad until further notice (with directions to destroy the old commercial) The station still sometimes runs the wrong ad. Three - The programmer at the station isn't notified of a change and continues running the wrong ad Four - The ad agency forgets to contact one station who continues to run the wrong ad In my experience, scenario number three occurs most frequently. I used to do this all the time way back in 91 when I worked at the local NBC affiliate in Alberquerque. And we didn't have non linear editing back then. We were doing it using 3/4" tape stock and a Sony RM450. And serioulsy, with just an overdub it would take 5 minutes. We could even use our on camera graphics designer to create a slide that we could edit in within 15 minutes. For the station, this could easily be done and inserted into rotation within a half hour. Worse case scenario, they can pull the ad with only a few minutes notice. I couldn't care less how DW handles the issue, just sayin' these things are even easier to do in this day and age on my laptop. So if they wanted the commercial changed or taken out of rotation, it isn't that difficult. Barring any kind of legal issues, or contracts, it's usually a phone call or 2. Legal issues certainly come into play. My ad agency would never let a station change an ad under any circumstances, because of all the approvals needed. It's a CYA industry. And so true that automation should in theory make everything easier, but when the new ads arrive and a senior person accepting materials is not physically at the station the materials can end up anywhere. We have had RUSH material sent from the ad agency sit in a mail room for days. Even if materials are sent digitally, it can be logged improperly or lost at the station. I'm not saying it is not the ad agnecy's fault but if any stations are running correct ads, there is a very strong likelihood that Dollywood and the ad agency did their job. -
Gröna Lund Discussion Thread
larrygator replied to Tobias94's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The issue is not the height, the issue is if it will fit in the footprint available. -
Hasn't this already been done (many times over) in many places?

Great point. And even if he didn't Thread Locked! Here is a relevant thread that never gained traction back when it was started, feel free to have a serious (ok semi-serious) discussion there. themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=188848#p188848

Forceless coaster?
larrygator replied to gbioryl's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Forceless means lacking in force Forceless coaster means a coaster lacking in forces Of course, every coaster has some forces, but people tend to exaggerate. For example, if I was to say that a person has no common sense, of course that person probably has "some" common sense. -
^No portion of Joker is over water Per a Q&A with John Fitzgerald, it is actually going to be a three-year project. John Fitzgerald did say during the Joker Construction that they would be making an announcement about the parking lot soon, and I still didn't know whether or not to believe the Facebook post.

Just another piece of the growing amusement park puzzle in the region. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/six-flags-is-coming-to-giant-dubai-amusement-park/ Six Flags is coming to giant Dubai amusement park CBS MarketWatch March 28, 2016, 3:33 PM DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -A massive Dubai amusement park project still under construction plans a $454 million addition to include a Six Flags (SIX), the company said Monday, yet another major bet on tourism by the attraction backed by the city-state's ruler. The new spending by Dubai Parks & Resorts, which already includes Bollywood and movie-themed parks, as well as a Legoland, will put the cost of the entire project in the sprawling desert southwest of the city at well over $3 billion. And by adding the Six Flags, it appears the company hopes to exorcise the lingering memory of another massive amusement park planned here to include it before the emirate's 2008 property crash. Dubai Parks & Resorts said its board of directors agreed to issue shares worth 1.67 billion dirhams ($454 million) to raise money for the Six Flags Dubai park. Shareholders will vote on the deal in April, it said. It offered no other details about what will be planned for the park, though a mock-up on display earlier this month at the resort's main office showed a possible addition to the park on its eastern corner. In a statement, Dubai Parks & Resorts' CEO Raed Kajoor al-Nuaimi said the addition of the Six Flags park would "further establish Dubai Parks and Resorts' position as the Middle East's largest leisure and entertainment destination." "This means we will be able to strengthen the appeal of our destination, attracting thrill seekers of all ages," he said. Officials hope to open the Six Flags park by late 2019. Approval of the plan by shareholders appears likely. The park's majority owner, with a 60 percent stake, is Meraas Holding, a firm backed by Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Previous listings on the Dubai Financial Market showed the Kuwait Investment Authority, that country's sovereign wealth fund, owned a 5 percent stake, as did Bahrain's Mubasher Financial Services, though that information was no longer listed the exchange's website Monday. Shares in Dubai Parks & Resorts closed at 1.21 dirhams (33 cents) in Monday trading. Six Flags Entertainment "will be heavily involved in managing" the Dubai park, said Nancy Krejsa, a spokeswoman for the Grand Prairie, Texas-based company. She declined to discuss the financial terms of the deal. Annual reports for over the last two years for Six Flags included mentions of it making licensing deals overseas that don't require it "to make any capital investments," while reaping fees while any park is under development or opened. Six Flags signed a 2014 deal with Meraas to build a theme park on Dubai's outskirts, and the Dubai Parks & Resorts' announcement is "the next stage of the agreement," Krejsa said in an email. It also announced a partnership last week with private firm NaVi Entertainment to lend its name to a theme and water park in Vietnam, without disclosing financial terms of the deal. While still mostly desert, the site of Dubai Parks & Resorts is close to where Dubai plans to host the 2020 World Expo, or world's fair, as well as Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, which officials hope someday will handle over 200 million passengers a year. Investors hope to gain from the growing number of tourists visiting Dubai, home to the long-haul airline Emirates, the world's tallest building, luxury malls and other attractions. In 2015, Dubai saw 14.2 million overnight visitors, up from 13.2 million the year before, according to the emirate's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing. But challenges remain for the park, which is scheduled to open its other attractions this October. Low global oil prices have pinched the United Arab Emirates and other neighboring Gulf countries, which supply a ready stream of tourists to Dubai. Meanwhile, the memory remains of a massive planned amusement park known as Dubailand, which collapsed when property values in the emirate crashed and Dubai had to accept multibillion-dollar emergency aid packages from Abu Dhabi to stay afloat. Stefan Zwanzger, a German amusement park enthusiast who blogs about the industry and has lived in the Emirates, said that while amusement parks likely would do good business in the UAE, adding so many of them at once through this project and others could prove problematic. "I have no idea who's writing the feasibility study for the UAE to build so many theme parks at the same time," Zwanzger said. "It's as if you go in a Lamborghini and you accelerate from zero to 100 in four seconds. It's probably fun, but you can hit a lamp post."

On to a more interesting topic, the customized cannoli station are assume. I love that they offer shells dipped in pistachio nuts. I ate in the Italian/Asian restaurant. I was afraid to order the Mongolian Beef as it looked to be sitting for awhile, but is was very tender. The sauce was very tasty, but not like any Mongolian beef sauce I had tried prior. It was not spicy and more resembled a black bean sauce. Still very good, just not spicy as I expected.

2017 New Rides and Rollercoasters
larrygator replied to Henry M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
When a sufficient number have been announced (September-October), an official thread will be started just as it has been for the past 4 years. -
Whether you consider them true coasters or not, US (and Canadian) mountain resorts continue to install mountain coasters to boost their summer offerings. With 3 more being built in the US, there will be 25 by the end of the year in the US (plus a few more in Canada). Complete North American list can be found on Page 11 of this thread

Here is my recap of today Joker's Construction Tour, although so much more was discussed. Thanks to the Communications Team (Kristin, Kaitlyn and Jacob) for leading us around. And special thanks to John Fitzgerald for fielding our questions. Joker We were first led to the backstage area to see the Joker trains The park insists the name change from Total Mayhem to Joker was last minute and not planned all along. Loading will be on two sides like SFFT. The Ha Ha Ha sign that appeared in prior artwork will not happen. Joker should be topped off by the end of this week Memorial Day weekend is still the scheduled opening. Harley Quinn Crazy Train name was accidentally leaked on the Six Flags website, it was supposed to be revealed today. The ride will not open til mid-late April Big Wheel will also not open with the park, still under rehab Nitro looked as though the supports had been painted. Initially many of us thought B:TR track had been repainted, but more likely just power washed. There are still two piles of rocks in the location of Chiller's station but the park was not willing to talk about the location It was revealed that a second bar (beer and wine) will open in the park next to Sky Screamer, it will be called Sky Bar. Another Go Fresh and the Villian's Cafe will be the only food changes in the park. Panda Express remains for 2016. Apparently each contract has a different contract with Panda Express, it was not confirmed the contract expires. Two new shows in the park were revealed: "This Magic Moment" this magic show will occur in the Seaport Adventure theater while "Wild Life Game" will occur in the Seafari theater. Holiday in the Park exceeded the park projection of 209,000 guests (they can not disclose the total). Although it could have been higher without some of the rainy days. The outside vendor carts (Waffles and Empanadas) were last minute additions due to heavier crowds than expected, the park will be better prepared in the food prep area and the participation of outside vendors is TBD for 2016. John Fitzgerald was very open in the Q&A but also tight lipped. When asked about old schools flats (was asked about a Wave Swinger and Enterprise) he said he liked them and opening Adventure Alley is a big success in his mind. I suspect he would like to add a few more throughout the park. When questioned about Justice League and how having it would really help round out the park especially during HITP, he didn't want to talk but admitted he loved the ride. I still think this will be the 2017 addition to the park. John loves the transformation the park makes after dark during Fright Fest and HITP and wishes he could find the magic bullet that works for SFGAdv on summer nights. The Glow in the Dark parade was nice, but didn't really keep people in the park or draw more people in late in the day. He still wants a more visible location for the babboons. And the last bit of info was about the parking lot, but I had trouble hearing. I thought he said ad announcement about upgrades in the parking lot would occur in about a week (but it has nothing to do with solar panels) Now on to the pictures The trains have all been rounded up and captured I was careful to not put my hands inside the crate for fear of losing fingers to these wild beasts This is the part with wheels. I guess this is called a chassis, what do I know. Close up of the technical stuff Brake doo hickey Box 18 is full of Excitement Good thing I wasn't wearing my pacemaker Only for the eyes of those obsessed with magnets One more technical thing. If you know what this is, then good for you because I really don't care. Anyone have a guess what is inside Pallet 27? If you guessed Booster Tire Assembly, you're a wiener. This looks important The coaster A few trees were harmed (slightly more than a flesh wound) in the making of this coaster, but SFGAdv always replants for any removed trees. You will not be able to stand here once the coaster is operational. And I found that ladder that used to be leaning against Fort Independence Only a few more pieces to go The supports form a W because this coaster is a Winner! Last remnants of Fort Independence Sign, your days are numbered Old Track Shiny new track The future SkyBar a new pile of dirt, start speculation The piles of gravel remain Park President John Fitzgerald graciously and patiently addressing our group.
