As much as some people may want to blame the economy, I do not feel that is what killed Hard Rock Park. Your list seems a little bit extensive. But if you want to hit up Valleyfair/Nick U, I'd go up I-35 so you can go to WoF and Adventureland in Iowa. from the Twin Cities, you can take 94 to the Dells. You can find decent parks allong the corridor.
