Splash Mountain History/Interesting Facts?
DenDen replied to sfmmrules!'s topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
For a while, it was known as "Flash Mountain", and a web site was dedicated to it, which eventually became a porn site. -
Hehehe, I did that "modeling" back in the early 90's in Vegas and L.A., now I'm the one behind the camera on occassion for "models" in town that have already made a name for themselves. It's such a nasty business, but I like doing the freelance/custom work for individuals instead of the companies.

We'll just let the pictures speak For themselves! I'd like to thank my personal inspiration, Nicole Richie, The Cocacola company for creating Coke ZERO, and my personal trainer, whom lasted one day, and I figured out "There's gotta be an easier way". I'm ALL DONE!

To quote De La Soul... "Three, is a magic numbah... Yes it is... it's a magic numbah..." I can't believe I've wasted countless hours of my life talking about coatsers in this place. Thank you R&E!

I don't think anyone wants the demographic Circus Circus caters to... Well, that's very true now. THANK GOD! I was supposed to be there yesterday, but had to cancel I've not been back since I left in '98! Anyway, back on topic, Blackpool is just too well known for it to fall as Southport did. I think the new policy will do good for them.

Why no pre-drops on B&M's anymore?
DenDen replied to coasterguy99's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It does reduce lift chain stress, since th chain is gently disengaged instead of the train ripping itself off. You just answered my question! It's not tention it relieves, it's stress, there is a difference here. Once you used the word "stress", and everyone's explanation after it, it fits. Someone needs to change that Wiki! -
As a former Main Banker at CC, I can tell you that Adventuredome is just that, a babysitting service. It will never have an admission price. Part of CC's success all these years has been free stuff where the kids can hang while the parents spend their college tuition. It's the market demographic that nobody else in Vegas has been able to capture. Everyone tried to copy it in the 90's, but they all failed. Why? Because they charged admission. Advernturedome (as far as the book$ were back in the 90's) NEVER made a profit. I would assume it's the same today. Putting in a new million dollar flat every couple of years (and I know, they don't cost a million!) keeps them coming back. The Million dollar loss from that one ride pays for itself when the parents give CC their Billion (with a B) Dollar revenue every year. The dome is a money-sucking machine. But when compared to the money the casino makes from the parents dropping their kids off there, it's like a pin-hole in Hover Dam.

Why no pre-drops on B&M's anymore?
DenDen replied to coasterguy99's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Is there any real proof to this statement? Is there a published statement from B or M in a reliable publication? From a mechanical standpoint, I find this hard to believe. (Don't ask me to explain my theory, I don't want to bore you. hehehe) Just seems a lot of times, people just make stuff up to sound knowledgable, and this sounds like one of those things. Not that it's REALLY important, it could be just a matter of an initial design that always worked for them, and for all we know, to pump out coatser designs, that was made the default lift template in their CAD in the beginning. -
Scott's Coaster Closet

Yea, I remember these tragedies, they were so publicized back then. Back in ancient times, when I was a young'un, Kennywood NEVER checked restraints on coasters until they installed the Laser Loop. And even then, they just did a sport check to see if restraints were down, not necessarily locked. As we all know, today, it's a different story. The only other restraints they really checked back in the 70's (which was really ahead of their time) was for the Kangaroo, Space Odesy (Scrambler) and Paratrooper. These rides had (and still do, minus SO, which is gone,) old brass latches that a lot of smaller kids have trouble locking themselves. Most of the rides back then didn't have restraints at all, like the Catepillar, Calypso, Grand Prix, Le Cachot, Old Mill, and more... Slightly unlrelated, I just heard Kennywood is updating the Log Jammer with seat dividers. (Back rest in the middle of the boat to divide seating 2 and 2 per boat.) Shame that the way we remember things gets ruined by a letigious society and stupid people's children. I really need to get my classic videos encoded. -
I'm sure the atmosphere is really going to make this park, (hopefully, it will be done right!!!) but as it stands, as someone else mentioned, it just reminds me of other stuff thats already out there, and IOA comes to mind for me as far as feel. I've done HardRock Seminole and Vegas, so I'm familiar with the feel of the brand. I was hoping for something more unique, and right now, the Ferris Wheel lift is the only thing, and it's not on a very big ride. Everything else has been done in one form or another. I'm sure, once this park is done, and open, I will probably feel differently. It's just hard for me to tell at this point. Led Zep isn't wowing me, I'm only 3 hours away from Hulk, and is probably a much more exciting ride. I'm not one into the "credit" thing, so I won't travel unless it's worthy of it.

Kentucky Kingdom (SFKK, KK) Discussion Thread

Another aspect of this, I can see the ride ops also filing a suit. These are kids that had to experience this, and now, they have to go through depositions and testimony and relive this. Over what, a $5.15 an hour summer job that they no longer have? Six Flags or plaintiff lawyers trying to lay blame on these kids? This is just sheer neglect on Six Flags part, that destroyed not only the injured on the ride, but these ride ops as well. As a former amusement park employee, I can feel for these kids too. -
^ That's actually incorrect. MBB made the first one. From another thread at TPR, in which I also found this info elsewhere on the net... Also, Schwartzkopf had a working model around the same time, and one was planned for Busch Gardens in 1984, but never took off. (The Schwartzy-one looked awesome!)

One of the 70's trends that I think we all are glad had died an excruciating death... MIMES! As always, great stuff! Gotta love the head-restless Revolution! -

Very cool! I love the look of raw mechanics. This will be very interesting to see finished. Looks much cooler than "eekenjeekajewawaa", or whatever the hell that name is. -
So sad, as people mentioned earlier, throughout amusement park history, there is always suspicion of bandshell/dancehall/ballroom fires. Seems when a park is in trouble, one of these types of structures always burns. (insurance, enemies, homeless, etc...) And as someone else pointed out, these structures are OLD and go up like matchbooks, easily set, either accidentally or intentionally. Growing up in Pittsburgh, I only went there a couple times, we always went to Kennywood, West View, and White Swan.

Disney expanding into Canada?

I dunno, after Kennywood selling out, I'd believe anything shocking happening in the industry at this point. Though I still take this as a theoretical scenario, it can happen. -

This is the one I was waiting for! SO AWESOME. I miss the "blimps", the Calyspo, the Li'l Dipper, and the gas powered cars on the Turnpike! The memories.... I also love the way this brochure brags about the Log Jammer, which was the attraction/addition that kept Kennywood alive just after WestView closed on the other side of town. As a matter of fact, I found my old video footage on VHS the other day. (Some of it is from Kennywood, some from Vegas!) I hope to get that converted to digital by next week to ad to this wonderful thread! -

^^, Vekoma's website is less than a month old, I was just there and remember the crappy website they had before. And 50MPH can easily be a family coaster in any other country but the USA. LOL The times are a-changin'
