Disneyland, rather than building something new.....

Recommended Posts

Which attraction will the Disney Imaginers "Reinvent" next?

One obvious choice is Star Tours (There have been rumors for years)

But, I could also see Disney eventually "Updating" Autopia to match the Pixar automobiles from the upcoming movie "Cars".

Whereas, I don't personally believe that the Disney Imaginers should necessarily "Reinvent" or redo preexisting attractions, it seems to be what the Imaginers and or Disney management like to do.

One ride I wouldn't mind seeing them bring back in some new and creative way, would be the PeopleMover. This was a great yet simple attraction, where you could just kick back with your friends/family for a enjoyable 15 minute journey thru Tomorrowland. It's hard to believe that this missed attraction has been gone for over ten years.

Geez, has it been that long already?

I used to LOVE the PeopleMover. Rode it everytime I was at the park because it was a really nice, relaxing ride that I could enjoy with my family.

I think the main issue with the ride is simply reinforcing the structure, which theoretically might require the blocking out of major traffic areas and basically create a very big hastle. They'd have to do it in numerous segments, I suppose, working on a third of the straightaway at a time, then on one bend, and then the mirroring bend.

My dream for a while has been to build a true E-ticket over by Thunder Mountain Ranch. It'd be a perfect place to build that long-fabled Fire Mountain or Geyser Mountain ride, or something similar.

I'll just pass over what is being said 24/7 at visions fantastic...

1. Tear down Pooh and bring back the Country Bears.

2. Bring back the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, especially with the remake coming out.

3. Make more three-dimensional themeing (examples: Monster's Inc, DCA's big front gate wall thing, the stationary statues in Tarzan.)

4. "Reinvent" DCA's Tower to be as awesome as Florida's, or better yet, Japan's.

I would rather they stop "re-inventing" and just instead "invented" something new.

What was the last time Disneyland got something really "new"? Indy in 1995?

I say bring back the atomobiles (Journey Thru Ineer Space)

Seriously, when's Disney going to make a ride using the Spiderman (IOA) and DarKastle technology? I mean, DarKastle is just awesome, everything is just right in-your-face! What Disney could do with it would be simply MINDBLOWING!!! Of course, that wasn't the point of the topic. Oops.

What's are the Fire Mountain and Geyser Mountain rides?

Well, I would like to see a lot of rides come:

America Sings

Mine Trains Through Natures Wonderland

Adventures Through Inner Space

Things I would like to see Disneyland have:

Taking out HISTA and putting in ExTERRORestrail

Put Castle Mystery Tour inside the castle( since the walk through has been closed since 2001 or 2002)

I doubt any of these things will happen

I would rather have re-invented attractions than nothing at all. Im extremely looking forward to Finding Nemo: Submarine Voyage since I only got to ride the original once. I also LOVE Monsters Inc. The invasion scene is just AMAZING and its pretty much a million times better than Superstar Limo. Im sure that eventually Disneyland will get something completely new but until then I hope they bring back some of the attractions that used to exist that havent been taken over by something else yet. I really hope that they end up getting something back on the tomorrowland tracks since the area now lacks the kinetic movement unless you count the observatron.

My take on this:

I was recently at Disneyland and my dad and I were discussing what they were going to do with the Peoplemover track. I heard a rumor a long time ago that they were going to redo Rocket Rods and come back with a brand spanking new ride. Just as I said this, one of the CMs walked by and heard this. She sat down with us and immeadieatly began discussing with us. She said that Bob Iger had a slogan about Disney rides. She said it was "If it doesn't work, don't waste money fixing it, just take it out." She also mentioned that Bob was eager to reinstall the Peoplemover after the Nemo project was done. The CM said that this will most likely happen and that in the end of 2007, we will probably have the Peoplemover.

I also say that we need a new E-ticket ride and not remake anything. I mean, restating something previously mentioned, remaking Autotopia to fit with the new movie Cars. I think this would be rather silly and that they should focus on bringing out new ideas instead of "re-inventing" them. I still wonder everytime I drive past the Imagineering building, "What do they do in there?"

Having the peoplemover connect with DCA would be cool...for a theme park that's supposedly themed after California, DCA could use a couple more coasters.

From what I understand, DLR has been doing record business ever since the beginning of the 50th Anniversary thing...and that shows no signs of letting up. So - to be perfectly crass about it - why would the bean counters approve some mind-blowingly revolutionary E-ticket when the park is packed as is?

^Because you can't market a 50th anniversary forever. Nor can you keep marketing C and D tickets, parades, and shows forever and expect to keep growing...

(And part of the reason the park is so packed is that they have continually taken things away from Disneyland, thus lowering the capacity. 2,000+pph E-ticket ride with a big queue=at least 5,000 more tickets they can sell.)

IIRC, not counting 2005, every one of Disneyland's highest attended years have been on years E-tickets have opened.

Just a thought for those of you saying that you wish they'd "bring back" whatever ride...when has Disney ever changed a ride, then later changed it back to what it originally was? If that has happened, please tell me, because I don't think it has, and I don't think it ever will. The closest they have ever come was with Journey Into Imagination/Journey Into Your Imagination/Journey into Figment's Imagination but that wasn't like they "brought back" Journey into Imagination...they just turned a crappy redo into a slightly less crappy redo.

^^ Indy uses better vehicle technology (IMO)

Technology isn't really a matter of opinion. The Indy/Dinosaur vehicles don't have nearly the range of movement as Spider-Man's motion base. It could easily replicate anything those other rides do.

BAH! to the motion base and 3D! Bah I say!

There's nothing clever about moving a simulator around a building whilst it shows you scenery ON A SCREEN! It might as well stay in the same place like Star Tours.

Nope, EMV is a much fuller experience. It forces the designers to include REAL scenery. And no level of fancy camera work and projectors will ever be able to fool your eyes enough to beat real objects....

But enough about next gen' simulators, the topic is Disney re-do rides.

I'm kinda split on how I feel about this. I mean, I HATE what they've done to DLRP's Space Mountain... Yet I'm really glad they decided to make better use of the visionalamarium, neck ache, theatre-of-eye-strain by putting in Buzz Lightyear.

So.. sometimes it is necessary to update. Otherwise they are left with the costs of an old, outdone attraction that would rarely make a difference to someone's day if it were there or not.

HOWEVER, it does annoy me that they seem to be prioritising re-makes over the installation of new attractions.

When they delay being genuinely creative and innovative because they want to pad out a few more easy years with a retheme- THEN it bothers me.

If they are worried about the costs of the design stage, tell them I'll do it all for £50!!!

^ I think you would have no problem during the design stage, seeing that you did create Pride Mountain.

I was quite recently discussing this topic with Benji (America Sings Freak) and even though I don't really trust him on some issues, he made a good point on one. The Fantasyland Theater has been sitting there for quite some time and it is HUGE! They could defenitly fit an E-ticket ride in there. The space is there, Disney has the funds, so my question is WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR??!!!

Nope. Nothing at all. Just perfectly syncing the ride vehicles movements to the 3d video, which is seamlessly integrated with the 2d sets. Did I mention that the ride vehicles are actually moving along a track, and not just staying still like with other motion simulators?

But anyways...They won't use the Fantasyland Theater for anything besides an entertainment venue. It's the marquee Disneyland entertainment venue. I'm guessing the next E-ticket will be where the former Festival Arena/current Big Thunder Ranch is...

Yep, and the Grand Canyon is just another hole in the ground, the Great Wall is nothing but a big fence, and Derek has a beer every now and then, right?

I've been on both the motion base rides (I'm assuming there's just two. Darkcastle and Spiderman, right?)

Spiderman was better, yes, because it included real scenery to a degree. However, I still think the reliance on projected visuals was far too heavy. In my opinion it just looks false. Pretty- But incredibly false. I just can't convince myself that I'm looking at anything other than a screen.

Darkcastle pretty much relied entirely on screens, and that was an even worse offender of that issue.

Having sets with real depth and real moving parts is a much better way to make it believable. You could have the vehicle race past a stone pillar and people would actually lean away from it for fear of it hitting them.

The comment bringing natural wonders into this is pretty stupid. My opinion on projected action figures means I have no respect for historical landmarks? ...oh-kaaay

Hmmm, this discussion should probably have its own topic

------------

Anyway, the above idea of the Flying coaster sounds good. I don't see why Disney couldn't expand into top range thrill ones one day- even if just at a specific park with the right target audience.

Might be a bit much to want it without theming though. They like to offer something different, and quite a few parks have got generally themed flyers already.

...Of course, first they'll have to stop rebranding rides and settle down in their design offices again. Which was the initial point raised in this thread

As I said earlier, whenever I drive past the Imagineer building, I always wonder "What the heck are they doing in there?!" because they haven't come up with a new attraction since Indy more than ten years ago. I know that they just finished Everest and all, but lets get to work on another new ride for the DLR. IMO I think it has been to long. I have a question, Is creating Nemo considered redoing or completly new ride? That has always kept me wondering.

Well, speaking of reinventing, the new Haunted Mansion attic effects started yesterday afternoon. We rode it 3 times because there is a lot to look at. I think it is pretty cool, the bride is impressive and the storyline is cool. I did not take any pictures because I really beleive they would not do it justice.

That said, I think that they did a pretty good job and people will be pleased. I would rather have brand new attractions for Disneyland, but at least this is something.

You know what I don't get...

Doesn't Disney effectively own most of the Kingdom Hearts franchise that is made in conjunction with Square? Wouldn't a ride and possibly a CG series make a heck of a lot of sense? I mean the models are made already by Square and with some refinements would largely work perfectly.

I would also think you could make a really fun ride based on some of the sequences using some of the motion rides or that Vekoma (hey Disneys ones are usually good) Pandora's Box prototype.

I mean the games are popular (top seller in March with 1 week or sales right?) and it seems like a weekly CG series could make it huge along with some climactic battles in movie releases... (Sorry I'm a bit of a Square Fan... So its kinda a dream for me...)

Oh yeah back on topic... Um I guess I have no real problems with Disney remaking rides but they really do need some new ones... I just can't think of any Disney ride that excited me near as much as ToT in Florida and Indy in Cali and those have been around for a decade... Hopefully the new management will be a little more open to spend money to create new experiences that don't necessarily tie in with the latest Disney movie release.
