Johnny Upsidedown Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Hey everybody. I was out at Six Flags Over Georgia for Goliath Media Day Preview. I am exhusted from the ride home so simple and short.. The ride is a nice air floater ride. Tons of floater air and some good speed. The ride has good paceing and will be enjoyed by most. Anyway Media Day was a short announcement with a skit of actors playing the part of David and Goliath with the announcement. Mr B of B&M was on hand and he took a bunch of rides. Anyway way to tired to tell more. I still have more photos to add but the main ride photos are up from the event. I have 60 photos from today on my site. So go here www.Johnnyupsidedown.com or straight to the photos here http://www.johnnyupsidedown.com/new2006g1.html J.
SharkTums Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Not even one teaser photo to give us incentive to click...come on, you can host it so you still get the hit, but give us something!
Johnny Upsidedown Posted March 31, 2006 Author Posted March 31, 2006 Iam Sorry I tried I was just to tired to do it. 8 hour drive home after lots of Goliath rides makes for scrambled brains. Here is a teaser is that better.
pkdcoaster Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Thanks for posting those pics so soon Johnny...The ride looks great JEFF
UberBeavis Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Very nice... If only our Goliath could be so beautiful...
colossus Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 thanks for the pics it looks like a really great coaster.the first of many great coaster's in 2006.
captain_dl Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Great pics! My son and I are in the one of the crowd shot at the end of the announcement with the confetti in the air. I am pointing to the ground and he is in the yellow shirt. It was an awesome day and a fantastic coaster. What a great addition to the park. Well done SFOG!
ECZenith Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 It's so... pretty! ::sniff:: I can't wait to get on both Goliaths this summer. Thanks for the great photos!
robbalvey Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Awesome update! Thanks for ths pics. Seriously, though, we're usually open to people posting links to updates on their site, but giving us a couple of pics as a teaser is always nice. At least that way you're both contributing and linking at the same time. --Robb "Looks like we might have to get out to SFOG this year!" Alvey
CoasterCrazy Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Thanks for posting the pictures! I'm just finished uploading all of my pictures to my photo site, I will be posting them later! Goliath was a lot fun and the airtime on it was amazing! Goliath ranks as one of the best steel coasters that I have been on!
rollermonkey Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 First, let me say that it is completely absurd that not all the seats were full on every train. I could have definitely helped in that regard! Second, Johnny, beautiful photos! Third, Mr. B and Mr. M have created a truly attractive coaster. My question is this: What's up with the random supports? A post, one kicks left, another right, and the next is an 'A' frame. All without any seeming reason or pattern.
Billy Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 that station looks fantastic! thats some good designing.
ParkTrips Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 First, let me say that it is completely absurd that not all the seats were full on every train. I could have definitely helped in that regard! Probably has a lot to do with where they could place a support since throughout the ride it is going over and near pathways, buildings, other rides, water, trees etc. The ride sucks
chavslayer Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Goliath looks great! Nice photos. I wish someone would built something like it in the UK.
TheStig Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 ^^What are you talking about dude?!?! Besides it being rough at the bottom of th hills untill after the helix, it was amazing! It's def better that RB IMO and its probably THE BEST B&M thats been built in the last 3 years! Personially I loved it, and its on my top ten and I think could make a top ten list this year. Colin C
ParkTrips Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Sarcasm: making people look foolish since the age of the Greeks (notice the winky guy ) It wasn't THAT rough just a little fierce - nothing unlike what is at the bottom of the SROS clones - when you drop and turn at 70+ mph of course you will have a little lateral movement. edit: I done reviewed it After covering the construction of GOLIATH since it was nothing more than markings on the ground and land clearing outside the park, you know I was excited about the ride. Well, yesterday was my first chance to ride, and I will start off by saying it was a great addition to the park. The ride is full of airtime, perhaps my favorite of which is being the lunar-ejection that occurs in the back row on that skimpy little bunny hop right before the mag brake run. It's pure insanity. As you ascend the lift you know this is a unique coaster - its very steep and it simply towers over the park. It's funny to look at the helix from the top, a helix which looks diminutive from up there yet massive when standing beside it. The drops produce some fine floating, especially in the back. The far right side of the train is my favorite side with the back row being my favorite row (put them together to get my fav. seat) - I just think the air is a teeny bit better over there and I certainly like it for the better effects in the overbank. Not too much in the form of ejector air so that will disappoint many, but I am fine with either variation myself. Many have called the ride rough already, and while it does vibrate a bit, it isn't terrible by any means. That's just what happens when you travel 70mph through anything that's not strait. It certainly didn't take away from the ride. The helix was pretty cool, I would have loved to rip through there at least once like what we saw testing, but that's ok. You still get some killer speed pulling out (speed that is just barely trimmed) and the support assembly provides for some great hand chopper effects. Overall, a very solid ride, especially for its first day of constant operations with passengers. This is the ride we've been waiting on and it is great. The open air station is pretty neat and I'm glad that at least most of the queue is covered. Capactiy was good for a media day, though I do wish they would at least SELL glasses straps in the gift shop. Tons of money to be made there if they want to. By now you have noticed I gave it a 9 - it is really a 9.5 more than anything. However, I just can't quite bring myself to giving it a 10 - not yet, at least. I think once it wears in and gets rolling in the summer heat, it will be even better and there is a legitimate chance for it to be in the top 10 in Mitch's next poll since it reminded me more of Nitro than Apollo's, the collective favorite B&M hyper among enthusiasts. It is a fantastic ride but I just can't place it above either B&M hyper I have been on... or Ride of Steel in Massachusetts or Mind Bender at the same park, for that matter. For now, GOLIATH will sit at #5 on my steel list with a great chance of jumping up even higher as it progresses. Great ride Six Flags, great ride all around and it lived up to the hype. CoasterCrazy Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I rode Nitro last summer and I thought it was a fun coaster! IMO, Goliath is better than Nitro because of the extreme airtime you get if you seat in the back row! If you are riding in the last row brace yourself for the last hill before the brake run!
ahecht Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Damn, this really makes me wish that we hadn't cut SFoG out of our upcoming 12-day east coast coaster marathon.
TheStig Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 ^^Hey where were you yesterday? You never called, but thats okay, I hung out with Tommy and his crew. Oh and sorry PT, didnt see the winky guy thing there... IMO I think it was wayyyy better than Raging Bull and the airtime was extremely good (especially the last 3 bunny hills, those were awsome). Alright Im back to the park for a few hours tomorrow then off to Wild Advetures! Colin C
ParkTrips Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 So is it true that it's better than Nitro? For now I'd call it a draw. They are very similar, IMO, moreso that I was expecting.
Johnny Upsidedown Posted March 31, 2006 Author Posted March 31, 2006 Thanks everybody on all the great compliments on the photos its allways appriciated.. Goliath is a great ride with lots of airtime but I think also that Nitro is a tad bit better only because Nitros height and over all speed. Goliath is a well engineered medium to high speed air machine. Although another 5 mph over all speed would make the ride really rock it is good the way it is.
Jordan Shankman Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Heres a reverse POV on some front seat riders... http://wm.gannett.speedera.net/wm.gannett/wxia/rollercoaster330.wmv
captain_dl Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 That is our local weathermen. I am about 4 rows back on the left of the video (right side of the train) in a teal shirt with my hands up and my son is next to me in a yellow shirt. You can see us as the train starts up the lift hill. Of course you can tell if you really look, they cut out the last 1/3 of the ride. They took out the 4th hill, the horseshoe turn and at least 1 of the bunny hills. All during that trip I kept thinking that Paul Ossman's (the big guy in the blue) VIP badge was going to fly off and cut someone on the train behind him, but it never did. And the cheering in the station was not just for them, every train that came back into the station arrived to applause and cheers. What an awesome day!
DerekRx Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Sounds like a good addition to the park. Thanks all for the reviews. I'm looking forward to next month's ERT. Maybe I'll even be patient enough to wait for a backseat ride....then again, maybe not! There's always Sunday for that.
