I think its sad to see that there are so many gun homocides in America v.s. the rest of the world. The annual murder count around the world goes something like this: Great Britain-345 people, Germany-237, Japan-39, Canada-only a handful, USA-11,324... WHY??? There are 7 million guns in 10 million homes in Canada, they don't lock their doors during the night and they manage to keep the homocides very low.

Many people often think its all caused by the American history and how its supposedly more bloody than other countries' histories. WRONG... Think about Germany for example: (no offence intended) Hitler slaughters 13 million. Or they think that its all caused by how people watch and play violent movies games ect. in America more than anywhere else. Wrong again because guns are just as easy to get in Canada and other countries alike. So what do you think causes USA to have all this gun homocide

Mean World Syndrome:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_world_syndrome

Important to note that mean world syndrome isn't saying violence is CAUSED by watching entertainment or news media, but that it provides an aura that the world is a more violent place than it actually is. Look at the majority shows on TV: CSI, Law & Order, Medium, etc. They all deal with murder and crime, so much so, that I think people believe that those sort of things happen very regularly, when infact it is a rarer occurance.

Everything from that post sounds like it's directly from Bowling For Columbine. And according to that movie, scare tactics and the media are to blame.

I agree and I take exception to how Moore wandered around the southern Ontario area trying to substantiate his claims. There was one scene where he was walking into people's houses because they left their doors unlocked. I know no one that leaves their doors unlocked. Another part was showing the Toronto "projects". How clean it looked and safe. It was also in broad daylight. I would be scared to death to go there after dark because you would be shot or stabbed.

You have to take what he said with a huge grain of salt.

Not claiming to be particularly knowledgable about the subject but I always felt it had something to do with the laws relating to firearms...? There are problems with gangs in various parts of the UK, and shootings do happen from time to time, but it is much more difficult to obtain a firearm over here than it is in the States, and the laws are (obviously) entirely different. Do gun laws vary from state to state?

I just kinda figure the easier it is to get a gun (either legally or illegally), the more people will have them, therefore the risk of shootings occurring is higher.

I agree with CoasterLou. The most violent devoloped country on earth, according to a recent investigation by the UN, is the UK. However, it's mostly fist and knife fights, many of which go unreported, and few of which cause severe injury.

I think if you gave those same violent people guns, like they have in the US, their gun violence statistics would soar well past ours!

I feel it is simply far too easy to obtain a gun in the US.

Because people in Canada understand guns and how to use them.

Its a known fact that if you raise someone with guns, either teach them yourself how to use them safely and appropiately than chances are very low they will grow up to do anything but use it safely.

However, here in America, people own guns "just to have a gun". As if its some "end all" for safety. Chances are fairly decent if someone attacks you, they might have a gun as well. Chances are better that the defendant with the gun has little gun experience and that presents another problem all together.

Though, I think the main reason violence is so high is we simply have a higher density of people. There are way more people so naturally, way more shootings. I would still bet that for a percentage, we are the highest but it shouldnt be the numbers that astonish people but the percentages. Numbers will naturally be higher when your population is so huge and diverse. That diversity is a double edged sword. Its both a very good thing while presenting its own problems.

Anger is just a serious issue over here. I dont even know to start with the amount of anger that is harbored up by Americans but its out of control. the root of it is really just plain anger but where it comes from is the key. Understanding why people get angry and then why they have to resort to murder is a mystery IMO. You can come to a reason why that person did (like, wife cheats on husband. he flips, kills her or the other man) but to understand exactly why and what triggered him to go to the extreme is a much deeper story.

I dont think Media is as much an influence as we think though I would still believe it has an effect. I think alot of it starts right at home within our families.

Honestly, I see two major factors:

1. (most important)

Overall acceptance of violence in America! I'll make a comparrison:

USA: Violence accepted in any form, little kids even get exposed to it. Sex however is the opposite. The US goes crazy if they se a nipple somewhere!

Germany (and many others): Sex is no deal. You can buy a porn magazine on a shelf right next to the kids comic books. Violence however is a big deal (also because of history)! Any form of violence gets restricted big time!

Which one is better? Decide your own! The whole mentality when it comes to violence is just way too tolerant. I dare to say it's almost "cool"!

2.

MUCH easier to get a gun! Now I don't know compared to canada, but compared to most other countries it's a joke. If you live in the US and you want a gun, you'll get one without running into too much trouble!

Nonsense!

While the population in the US is high, the density is not! Yes, in cities it is, but you don't get many more shottings there then on the land!

Yes, I definately agree on that! During my time in the US I have noticed that many Americans are not willing to solve a problem without using some kind of force or power. Anger just leads them, which brings up the next thing...

I however, DO think ho much the media in the US is a major factor. TV in our society is used more and more as an "teacher". For a parent it is easy to put its child in front of the TV. This is sad, but true. I even dare to say nowadays the TV has more influence than a parent. Very scary though when I look what is on the TV!

I dont think gun violence has anything to do with the availability of guns. When we have deer hunting in Wisc. and hundreds pf thousands of people hit the woods, all with guns and we dont have murders/robbery's/carjackings etc.

The bottom line from dealing with it on a daily basis is that there is a segment of our society that is human debris and they are the one commiting crimes with guns and if these people didnt have guns they would use other tools to commit there crimes. And if we would get rid of them all of society would be better. Sadly with the current criminal justice system there is little done so the problems get worse and the human debris procreate at a higher rate and which makes for a endless supply of the criminal element that will use guns to harm people and not for sporting purposes.

Eventhough, there may be more Guns in the United States than People, the Vast Majority of Gun Owners out there Aren't Shooting their Neighbors!!!

As the saying goes.....Guns Dont kill people! People Do!!!

If some Lunatic Rams his "Ford" Automobile into a Group of Preschoolers, do we Ban all Ford Motor Cars???

Of Course Not! Because the person at fault is then one who Commited the Crime! It doesn't matter what they used to commit the offense!

So Quit Blaming Guns! or Gun Makers! for the Actions of those who if they didn't have a gun, whould have used a knife, or whatever, to commit their offense!

People who decide to Commit Crimes are the ones to Blame! You can't Blame those who manufactured the Tools for their Crimes!!!

The Blame Lies with the Person who Commited the Offense!

Washington DC has the highest murder rate of any city in America. It also has the some of the toughest gun laws in the country.

Figure that one out.

Most of this thread sounds like direct quortes out Bowling for Columbine.

Errr... thats true because I watched that documentary right before posting, but all in all I just wanted to know your opinions, thx people.

Stricter gun laws don't necessarily have an effect on the availability of guns. There's a lot more to it than that, really.

Also, there are more ways to kill somebody with a gun.

Guns Dont kill people! People Do!!!

People don't kill people, people with guns, and various other weapons, kill people.

I don't think gun violence has anything to do with the availability of guns. When we have deer hunting in Wisc. and hundreds pf thousands of people hit the woods, all with guns and we dont have murders/robbery's/carjackings etc.

I think we can safely say that somebody who purchases a gun for deer hunting are not going to be committing violence against another human, unless they feel they absolutely have to. That's not the point. The point is that we have to get the guns out of the hands of people who won't be using them for deer hunting, which means being tougher about them all around.

Furthermore, Wisconsin does have murders / robberies / carjackings / etc.
