Vegas Trip Planning

Recommended Posts

Hello all! Three friends and I are in the process of planning a trip to Vegas over our Spring break. After looking into airfare, the cheapest option I could find was for a flight out of Pittsburgh on Sunday March 6th and a return trip on Friday at 1am. The plan would be to stay in a hotel Sunday night-Wednesday night (4 total). Will hotels hold our bags after check out until our flight? Is this a reasonable plan? Questions regarding this idea/our trip in general.

1. Can I book a room for two people (making certain there are two beds) and have four in the room? I assume this is dm feasible especially if you tip the housekeeping and are careful about it. This is very important to the hotel discussion, because rates online skyrocket when you add people.

2. We've looked at a lot of hotels. What we are looking for is sort of unclear, except that it has a good location and is a 'Vegas Hotel.' We are considering Excalibur (our value option), Monte Carlo, and MGM Grand (and Signature). Monte Carlo looks to have a pretty solid location. Any thoughts? Is it worth paying $65 a more for anything besides Excalibur. We are splitting the trip price down the middle, but I think our budget is like $150 or a bit more, inclusive of tax and resort fees.

3. Pools. Are they open/worth pursuing in early March?

4. Is it worth dragging myself all the way to circus circus for the Adventuredome? I'm not gonna waste my friends time with it but should I bother?

5. Must hit casinos/spots/attractions/restauraunts?

I'm really just looking for any help! I'm a newbie to Vegas!

Thanks for your help ya'll!

If this needs to be relocated elsewhere, that's fine!

Yes, most hotels will hold your bags for free but tipping is standard practice.

1. Most hotels you can book a room with two beds for two people, just limit how many people go with you to check-in. One side note though, for example, at the Wynn you get discounted night club access when staying at the hotel, but only for two people.

2. Generally prices go down within 2-3 months of booking, right now they will be high because they know you are planning ahead. Also, for MGM properties you can sign up for Mlife for free, then login to mlife.com and generally rates are the lowest you will find anyway. Also, make sure you get a Hyatt number because at MGM properties you also can get Hyatt points in addition to Mlife points for your hotel stay. I would recommend the Luxor tower rooms (not Pyramid) over the Excalibur, they aren't too much more but much nicer.

3. I know for sure the Wynn pool was open last February, most of the other hotels the pool will be closed. You get what you pay for...

4. El Loco is fun, but $10 a ride. Desperado is only open Fri-Sun, and only open until 7pm on Sunday. Its super rough, but definitely a ride worth doing if you want a thrill, and the after 5pm pass is pretty cheap for unlimited rides, although you'll usually want a break between rides, its that rough...

5. Stratosphere, go to happy hour at the Top of the World Lounge, you dont have to pay tower admission. Also, Area & Wynn-the whole hotels, Bellagio-fountains, Luxor-atrium, Cosmopolitan-chandelier bar, and "The Roller Coaster" at NYNY would be sights I would see. If you want to drive Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Dam & the new bridge are worthy sites.

Hope this helps.

Unless you are sharing beds, stuffing four people into a standard Excalibur room is not going to be fun for anyone...

Monte Carlo standard rooms aren't that big either. MGM's would work. Signature is probably best since the suites will offer you a bit more room.

No, you can't sneak people into a hotel room. What you're proposing is the same as trying to hand someone your season pass so they can get into a theme park for free. It's theft of services. Hotels price their rooms for double occupancy, and that's why the price goes up if you have more than that. The hotel is incurring extra expenses related to the extra guests, so you are compensating them for that.

Monte Carlo is a great and not terribly expensive hotel, and it's got the "Vegas feel." That would be my choice among the ones you've listed.

Thanks for your help, guys. In looking at the rooms, both the Monte Carlo and MGM Grand seem to be our best option. I will continue to monitor prices and probably wait to book the hotel for a month or a bit more. Certainly not worth saving the money to stay at the Excalibur, I guess. Especially since it's all our first time.

Any show recommendations?

Also buffet and restaurant recommendations?

Which casinos should we definitely make an effort to at least visit?

I am really looking for any feedback at all from people's experiences there, so I can try to take the good and bad and make this great. I have been wanting to make a trip to Vegas for so long now. I obviously don't want to plan plan plan, but I want to go there with a good idea of some things we ought to consider doing!

Pay no attention to the guy that said you can't sneak people into your room. Done it on plenty of trips over the past 5 years. There's so many people in and out its not being monitored although depending on the hotel you may need to flash your room key to security to get to the elevator banks.

Book for two with double beds and you can sleep four. Monte Carlo is a good place. The Brand steakhouse at Monte Carlo is pretty good. New York New York is my favorite place to stay but I've stayed at the Monte Carlo a few times and it was good too. MGM to me is overly priced for what it is but to each their own.

As far as show recommendations, Zumanity at New York New York is good as long as you don't have any prudes with with since it's rather sexual in nature. Ka is also a good show at MGM. There was also a show a few years ago we saw at Ceasars Palace called "Absinthe" that was freakin hilarious.

Favorite buffet on the strip is The Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan. That is the only buffet I'll eat at. Huge selection of different things to eat and a lot are individually served.

You can definitely get 4 people into a room at MGM with no issues. I don't know about you, but when I go to Vegas I barely sleep anyway. MGM also has a really cool lazy river that you can hang out in during the day. The music from the pool party they have can be heard clearly, and its a very good vibe there. More relaxed than the pool party.

El loco is definitely a great ride, and the Arrow in there is good too (canyon blaster I think). Some solid flats in there too, but you'd probably only get a few hours of fun out of it.

As far as shows, I second Zumanity. Mystere is pretty good as well. If you want some (ahem) "adult entertainment, there are a ton of options. Spearmint Rhino is big, but tends to get very crowded, although mid week you could be OK. A bit pricey too though. Sapphire is much the same. A casual friend of mine runs Cheetah's, and while smaller, you get a whole lot more for your money there. Best " scenery" is most definitely Spearmint Rhino though.

Oh... Best steak in my opinion is Smith & Wollensky. Right on the strip. Top of the World at Stratosphere is cool too, but more for the view than the food. Buffet at Caesars is pricey, but really good. Hash House a go go inside the Link hotel is great for breakfast, huge portions. Be prepared to wait though

We go to Vegas a lot. . so this is just my 2cents:

Hello all! Three friends and I are in the process of planning a trip to Vegas over our Spring break.

Going during the week is not only the quietest time to go, it's also often the cheapest. Just keep in mind that many Vegas shows are 'dark' Monday and/or Tuesday. . so if you are planning a show or two, make sure they are playing while you are there (although I would buy the tickets on the strip at the discount Ticket locations on day of the shows).

it's totally feasible, and you can. .tho the honest person in me would just book for who's in the room. It is going to depend on the Hotel/Resort how much of a big deal they will make. . .

Is this your first trip? it sounds like yes, and therefore location is going to be important.

We try to always stay at Flamingo. It's not a *great* hotel, but it's reliable, a Vegas classic, they have upgraded a bit over the years, and tho it's basically a glorified Holiday Inn. .it's DEAD CENTER on the strip, and the location is the most important thing you want. (it's literally across the street from Bellagio Fountains, Caesar's Palace, Mirage/Treasure Island, Venitian, Bally's, and Paris are only a short walk away.

it's connected to the Monorail that runs down that side of the strip. It has a Deuce Bus Stop right out front (which will take you up and down the strip, and downtown to Freemont street 24 hours a day for really cheap fares), and it's got a Margaritaville restaurant attached.

Also nice, and a good cost/room is gonna be the Rio. All suites, and they do provide a shuttle bus to the stip. . but they are off strip and the only thing you can easily walk to is Gold Coast (good for table games, the locals play there) or the Palms. Beautiful hotel tho, and it although off strip, it's located near the center of it. (the shuttle will drop you off at Bally's).

3. Pools. Are they open/worth pursuing in early March?

Some will be, some wont. We've never found it worth it to pay upcharge to attend any of the pools at the hotels we've been at. . tho we will admit the pool at Ceasar's is beautiful, and the big pool at Flamingo (free if you stay on property) is nice with good drinks (but the two upcharge pools are not worth it).

really up to you and what you are looking for.

4. Is it worth dragging myself all the way to circus circus for the Adventuredome? I'm not gonna waste my friends time with it but should I bother?

Yes. Worth it, and both the Monorail, and the Deuce will drop you off at stops near CC, so it's not too far of a schlep.

Canyon Blaster is a great Coaster, and I've heard only good things about El Loco. We actually win at CC when we play slots there (the casino floor is HUGE and spread out).. and not only do they have a decent and very affordable buffet, but they also have free circus acts on the upstairs "midway" that's over the main casino.

They also have, what we consider, the BEST Steakhouse in Vegas. it's *not* cheap. . and it's kinda shocking that such an expensive restaurant is in such a craphole resort like Circus Circus. . . but yeah, worth every penny. If you win, make an effort to enjoy a meal there. (tho it will run you likely $200 for 3 people).

5. Must hit casinos/spots/attractions/restauraunts?

it comes to personal taste of course, but my list: (0-$$$ for cost)

1) Cirque Du Soliel show "Mystere" at Treasure Island ($$)

2) Cirque Du Soliel show "Love" at Mirage ($$)

3) Mirage volcano erupting every 1/2 hour after dark (free from strip)

4) Bellagio Fountains every 15 minutes after dark, every 1/2 hour during day (free from strip.. multiple different shows)

5) Moving Fountains/Aquarium in Caesar's Palace Forum Mall (free. . inside the mall on opposite sides)

6) High Roller Ferris Wheel behind Flamingo ($$)

7) Aquarium at Mandalay Bay ($$)

8) "Absinthe" show at Caesar's Palace outdoor tent ($$)

9) Excalibur Midway downstairs (free. .tho you pay for each game)

10) NYNY Rollercoaster (ouch. .it's gonna hurt, but you're in Vegas, might as well ride it) ($)

11) Steakhouse At Circus Circus ($$$)

12) Adventuredome at Circus Circus ($) (evening band is very reasonable)

13) Kiss Minigolf (across the street from Hard Rock Cafe/Casino) ($) Indoor, glow in the dark, KISS themed mini-golf with a huge KISS merch store. (helps if you're a KISS fan)

Don't forget Downtown (Freemont street)

14) the Giant Gold Nugget (at the Golden Nugget) (free)

15) Golden Nugget Pool (with waterslide thru Shark Tank) (free to go look, must be hotel guest to use pool).

16) Glitter Gulch (free admin, 2drink minimum) - famous strip bar on Freemont Street (Vegas Vicki kicks her leg from the roof).

17) Freemont Street Experience (free). . all along the covered roof of the pedestrian only Freemont street. I think it's every hour on the hour (after dark) during the week, and then every 1/2 hour on weekends.

18) the giant slot machine zip line. ($$) (not my thing, but maybe you're into it?).

-- Not a big fan of heights, but if you are, you might find the Observation Deck, and Rides at the top of Stratosphere appealing ($$).

-- I also didn't mention the gondola rides thru Venetian ($$) or the artwork hanging all over Bellagio (tho don't miss the flower garden display that changes seasonally in the lobby), or art galleries at Aria ($), Bellagio ($$) and Wynn ($$)

and if you have time, you can likely get a day-trip out to Ethel M chocolate Factory/Cactus Garden, Hoover Dam, and to Primm (to gamble there. . tho Desperado rollercoaster is only open on the weekends). Still, it's a free trip (the Primm Casinos sponsor it) and we always win there. Check as the Tix 4 Tonight booths about the daytrips. .you can get some good deals.

These are just MY suggestions.. I'm sure there are TONS of other things you can do that i didn't even mention (Neon Museum, Gangster Museum, Racetrack, Dolphins, etc).

have fun!

yep, one of our faves too (tho sometimes a bit pricey!).

we love the weekend Seafood buffet at Golden Nugget too, but sounds like he won't be in town those days.

I've gone to Vegas for two months each summer the last two years. What everyone has suggested regarding hotels seems fine and I'm not too knowledgeable on that topic as I stay elsewhere. I can give some other recommendations though.

Food:

Lotus of Siam. If you like Thai food you absolutely can not pass this up. It's a few minutes off strip in a super unassuming strip mall. Make reservations if you can. I'm not a huge fan of Thai and this is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere.

Mon Ami Gabi. French cafe at Paris Paris. Go here for lunch and sit outside. It is across from the Bellagio fountains so you get a nice view of the afternoon shows. Great food.

There really is an amazing amount of excellent food in Vegas. Decide what food you like and check yelp for the best options.

Shows:

Absinthe. Fantastic, hilarious, raunchy, and super entertaining. If you are easily offended skip it. If not you should enjoy it.

Cirque:

Any of the big CDS shows will be great. Each has it's own unique style so look into them and decide. They are a bit expensive though.

Mac King:

Very underrated and not really well known. He does a comedy magic show at Harrahs. It looks like it would be for kids but is very entertaining for all ages. Go to the show booth at Harrahs and get a coupon that gets you a show ticket and a drink for $14. By far the best show value on the strip and it's in the afternoon so it doesn't lock up your evening.

Must see sights:

All of the big touristy parts of the casinos are cool for your first vegas trip. Bellagio fountains, Venetian Canals, and all of the Wynn property are at the top of my list. Wynn is by far my favorite property. Go there and get some drinks. They have excellent drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic.

If you want to take a day trip go check out the Hoover Dam which is relatively close or Red Rock which is a bit further. Valley of Fire State Park is also really nice but that's further away too.

Other:

When you are flying in try to sit on the right side of the plane (to your left when entering the plane). Most often planes land at McCarren with the right side facing the strip. It's pretty awesome to see Vegas from the air. If you are coming from the east you will also have amazing views of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River of you sit on the right side.

Have a great time! Vegas is unlike any other city. Enjoy the sights, sounds, food, and craziness.

Edit: just saw the above post. Don't stay near Feemont Street. It's far enough away from the strip that it's not worth any cost savings. Check out that area one night if you want to hear blaring loud music and see the strangest people Vegas has to offer. You're not missing much if you skip it though imo.

Thank you guys for everything so far! This has all been super helpful. I think we're settling in on he MGM grand. Gonna book through Mlife and be on the lookout for a price drop.

^Its tough to really say what my group will enjoy. I know our price point is gonna be on the low-mid range for the meals we eat out. I've noticed a bunch of celebrity chef spots like burGR for Gordon Ramsey, etc. I guess we're probably going to avoid steakhouses and chains. Otherwise, we're fairly adventurous eaters. More likely, we'll be looking for stuff near MGM Grand, though I'm sure we'll be all over the strip at some point.

With regards to everyone's show recommendations, I can see us doing one expensive show and maybe a lesser known afternoon show. Is it likely we can score deeply discounted tickets the day of? As I've said I'll be there for four full days Mon-Thur (though Thursday we would have to see the early show for most stuff).

Also, I've read that the Aria has a great poker room. This true? Or is there a better one for an inexperienced player? I'm thinking Limit hold em is a safer, more sustainable option than no-limit, yeah? Should I pursue tournaments or $2/4 limit buy ins? I'm just looking to have a good time and get the most bang for my buck?

Any tips for room selection/what not for MGM Grand would be welcomed as well!

Thanks again!

See my last post about Mac King. You really can't go wrong with that one. Even if you don't like it you're only out $14 and an hour of your time. (And up 1 alcoholic beverage)

Now you're in my wheelhouse. I'm a full time professional poker player and have experience with most of the Vegas rooms. Aria is nice but not the most well run room imo. By far the nicest room in town is at Wynn. Very comfortable, excellent dealers and floor, and as I said before they have the best drinks/food. Try their Mocha or hot chocolate if you like that kind of drink.

As for finding a low limit hold em game, you may have to look at some of the smaller rooms. Download the app Bravo Poker. It lets you see what games are currently running at almost every poker room in the country. You may have an easier time finding a 2/4 or 3/6 limit game at Mirage, MGM, Harrah's etc but I'm not totally sure where the best games are for that.

My suggestion would be to check out a few rooms and find one you like. One of my favorite parts of my yearly "work" trip is that there are so many options. If the games aren't great in one room you can find better within 10 minutes elsewhere.

As for limit vs. no limit, it depends on what you're comfortable with. If you've never played poker in a casino setting before you'll probably be better off starting with a limit game until you get comfortable with the procedures, handling chips/cards, and just the excitement of it all. 2/4 limit isn't really beatable because the rake is too significant compared to the stakes but it would work fine for having some fun. 3/6 limit may be better. If you want to play no limit, again check the Bravo App to see your options. The smallest no limit game at most Vegas rooms is $1/3. Some have $1/2 though so look for those as the buyin will be a little smaller and the game plays smaller than the $1/3 games.

There are a ton of low buyin tournament options as well. I'm not totally familiar with them as I am orbit a cash game player but, and you may see a theme here, check the Bravo App. Each room will have their tournament info listed on their Bravo page. A $50 tournament is a fun way to play without risking much but expect a really fast blind structure at those levels.

Any other poker questions feel free to ask. You'll have a great time out there!

just a warning. .the MGM Grand is HUGE.

from wiki: The MGM Grand is the third largest hotel in the world by number of rooms and the largest hotel resort complex in the United States, ahead of The Venetian. When it opened in 1993, the MGM Grand was the largest hotel in the world.

it can take forever to get to your room from the casino floor.. something to keep in mind for when you are drunk/tired.

and you'll want to follow my suggestion to look at Tix4Tonite (they are up and down the strip, tho the closest one to MGM is going to be under the Giant Coca-Cola bottle next to M&M world).

You will be able to get discount "day of" tix for most shows in Vegas. .as well as great coupons for attractions (like 1/2 off Madam Tusaud's), and meals (they book the restaurant for you).

They are online too, if you wanna get a feel for it before you go:

Have you considered the old strip? You'll probably get a bigger room for cheaper. Just stay away from the Glitter Gultch.

IF, this is even a consideration, you can Priceline express deal a 4 star for downtown fremont street. the only 4 star is the Golden Nugget that is very nice. March during the week will most likely be really cheap.

if going to adventuredome, when i last went, jan, i got a coupon for $5 off for unlimited rides at the gas station. probably Rebel gas, i forget. el loco is fun, i also like canyon blaster has a couple rough spots, but i love the first drop.

do you have more ideas of what kind of stuff you want to do in vegas? if i can be a little judgy, i'm not sure we all know what a 21 year old from pa is expecting. lol over my lifetime, i've gone to vegas for many different reasons. sometimes it was clubs, shows, gaming, etc. you might have the time of you life walking down the strip and getting pranked on by the number of youtube pranksters. haha

I definitely want to have a great burger... I know Bobby Flay and Gordon Ramsey both have burger places in Vegas, so I guess we'll see!

I don't think any of us can really be prepared for how large it is going to be, but I think we are all going to be willing to accept that as part of the package! Also, well noted for the discount show tickets. I think we will probably make a decision based on what is most discounted that day. Any day gonna be cheaper than the rest between Monday-Thursday? I know some shows are off certain weekdays, so that's a thing.

Also if you're into guns like I am, there is a really cool firing range/shop called The Gun Store that you might want to check out.

And no one in my group is really gun buffs, but thank you for the suggestion!

We probably won't stay over the way of the old strip! And I think we are going to really get the biggest kick out of exploring the hotels/casinos/attractions that some of the hotels entail (shopping, casinos, restaurants). So with that in mind, I know I've gotten some pretty good suggestions so far for some free things to do at these hotels, but any additional must do's for anything on the strip in that way, could be good!

  • 3 months later...

Last little bit of help for me.

I need to book a hotel ASAP here. My options are as follows:

MGM Grand Grand Queen room (not $550 plus taxes, etc. etc)

Mirage Deluxe Queen Strip View ($550 plus taxes, etc, etc.)

MGM Signature Deluxe Balcony Suite ($515, plus taxes, etc. etc.).

I am personally leaning toward the Signature. From what I've read, it doesn't seem to be too far from the actual MGM Grand (10 minutes to the Casino) and can actually be closer to the pool than some MGM Grand rooms. My questions though:

1. Because it is a smaller complex and each tower has its own check in, can we still pay for a room for two and easily get the rest of us in the hotel? Just have the two people check in and the rest go in 10 minutes later and just go straight to the elevator?

2. Can anyone shed light on the views? Which tower affords the best Strip View/ do any of them really offer good views?

3. How close am I to the Strip as opposed to the MGM Grand main property?

4. Is the Queen Sofa bed a viable option? We have four people, so we might just end up splitting time between the King and the Sofa Bed?

5. Which hotel would you pick?

Thank you thank you thank you!

NONE of them are going to offer good strip views.

the Signature towers are behind the MGM grand, the strip mall, and looking down the strip, the Planet Hollywood.

(the Signature towers are one block off the strip -- your views are going to be blocked by the strip hotels)

in this pic, the Signature towers are on the right. . the strip is directly in front of them (the Green is the MGM grand, and New York New York and Mandalay bay are on the other side of the strip street)

I would choose Flamingo. . or Mirage.

but from your choices?. .go with MGM Grand proper. .it's right on the strip.
