Geauga Lake Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Actually, I'd rather have them rip out Anaconda at KD and replace it with that B&M floorless.

I couldn't agree more. I've been saying for a couple years that they should remove Anaconda, Shockwave, and Hurler. ...and add a B&M and/or an Intamin coaster.

That "taking the park back to the tradional family park" is bull. Geauga Lake before the SF era had so much more than it did now. You might as well remove Villain and Headspin and forget about them fixing RWB's because CF thinks its cheaper to just demolish a ride than to fix it. That leaves Double Loop, Big Dipper and BLMR. Honestly, they should bump the price down to 15 bucks next season because paying 26 for 3 rollercoasters aint worth it. The local fairs have more rides than Geauga Lake does...I dunno, CF is the worst thing to happen to the park. Deny it if you will but it is and its all Dicks fault. If Cedar Point ain't bringing in the numbers that was projected, it must be because GL had an increase and that simply can't happen...

I agree 100% that Anaconda should be ripped out, but Shockwave and Hurler? Hurler needs some re-tracking. But Shockwave... It has the 3rd longest line whenever I go to KD. Volcano and FoF always beat it. But Shockwave's line always spills out of the entrance. And when I rode it it wasn't that rough except for that final turnaround before the brakes.

I guess you should of reminded them of that before they touched SOB then, huh?

How many rides at Geauga Lake that broke down were repaired and reopened? Why spend the money repairing a ride when you can demolish it for half the price and replace it with a "Guess Your Weight" game?

^^ +1 to Beemer.

Just to let you know where I am coming from, I am not a Six Flags or Cedar Fair fanboy and believe that both have good and bad points. In my opinion, the people who really know how to run a park have last names like Henninger, Koch, Knoebel, Thompson, etc.

With that said ...

That "taking the park back to the tradional family park" is bull. Geauga Lake before the SF era had so much more than it did now.

Besides a monorail that nobody rode, antiquated slides and a "killer" drop tower, a corkscrew and $1 belgium waffles there wasn't much more.

Actually they will have six and people in Pittsburgh pay $31 for the same number.

Not in my opinion. That would be Six Flags. They overextended this park to a point where it could never survive. Sure, people will come out for 4 new coasters for a couple years, but what do you do once they have moved on. I need to dig up the pictures that i had from when CF took over the park, because it wasn't pretty.

Did you forget about the abundance of flats that used fill the 50's midway?

Hey, Six Flags was able to brings people into the park...for some reason CF just has a hard time doing that...

Holiday World - 3 Full size woodies

Canobie Lake - 1 midsize woodie, Arrow Corkscrew

Lake Compounce - 2 full size woodies, Boomerang

Funtown Splashtown USA - ONE full size woodie, one Galixi

Honestly, you shouldn't complain at $26. Thats pretty cheap for 3 roller coasters.

^ We are talking pre Premier/Six Flags right? Because other than maybe an Enterprise, I can't think of any.

I also don't think you understood my argument. I never denied that Six Flags brought in huge numbers to the park, but even their numbers dwindled the last two years they owned the park. Why do you think they sold it in the first place.

I understand that you are upset that your home park is ripping out it's coasters at an alarming rate and that is understandable, but take this into consideration. If Six Flags had still owned the park, there would be condos sitting on it as we speak.

Very true. Be happy that I don't own the park. Entry would be $30, parking would be free and there would be no season passes (at least to the ride side).

I'll grant yout that Hurler has been running better this season (they have done some retracking around the big banked curves at either end). Shockwave's line is usually hideously long because it takes so long to check the restraints and dispatch the trains, so I'm not sure it's a mark of popularity as much as it is a capacity/operations problem.

I consider Kennywood my home park.

Of course were talking about Pre Preimer...have you actually been to the park before it was owned by Premier? Gone are the Flying Scooters, Rocket Ships, Music Express, Tilta-Whirl, Paratropper, Rotor, Fly-o-Planes , Round Up and Sky Glide...

Yeah, because Kennywood is about 134089123490234092340923809238904x better than GL. It's a well balanced park that maintains its coasters very well, and has concessions that are reasonably priced and decent. They have great flat rides, nice coasters, dark rides, something for everyone really. GL, on the other hand, has concrete, cornhole, and bad coasters.

You do know who you're asking this of, right? RIGHT?

My only visit to the park pre-1996 was in 1993. My family would go to Sea World every couple of years, but it wouldn't be until I could drive myself before I finally made it to Geauga Lake.

Some friends and I visited the park on our way back from Cedar Point and I think we actually had more fun there. Texas Tornado was a big draw as nobody really had them at that time and Wolf Bobs was still a pretty damn good coaster. I don't remember all the little details of the visit, but damned if I didn't ride the Scooters.

My best memories of the park are from that visit and any step towards that (even if it means some disappearing coasters) is welcome in my eyes.

// I believe admission was about $16 (approx. $23 in today's money) back then.

Don't see why you would move Thundehawk from a family park to another family park and say that you want to focus more on family's. All in all, The Dick will most likely refer to the relocations as a "business decision"...that seems to be his catch phrase when mentioning Geauga Lake...

It's a shame, we hit up GL on our road trip to CP, and though it was a stunning park with the coasters on the lake and loved the view from the waterpark. We loved the setting and wished we could have tried X-Flight but we were a year too late. We were also shocked how nicely themed it was.

In fact, the majority of our best shots were taken their and not at CP, and probably our best memories of the trip were at GL even though we stayed there for 3.5 hours versus 3 days at the point.

Raging Wolf has a great location, it's too bad CP couldn't market GL as a brand extension. It could be great as a value add way to get people to extend their trips, for example, by having a free shuttle between CP and GL for Breakers or other resort guests.

Or to get pass holders the illusion of choice and variety will still catching their concession dollars.

The much hyped waterpark, however, was a bit of a joke. One slide tower and a Tornando with an hour plus line does not make a waterpark. They were even trying to upsell people to rent their own tubes.

Um no? I could see it as a business decision if it was a different coaster like RWB's but how is it a business decision when you remove to star attractions? What is there to market anymore? Obviously cornhole isn't as popular as they thought and Wildwater Kingdom is really a public pool with a slide complex...
