Roller Coasters in the Raw HD! On Blu-Ray!

Recommended Posts

I would totally buy this if I had a Blu-Ray player, but unfortunately I don't and at the moment I don't plan to buy one. Hopefully all these will be released on Raw 5 or a later installment if they haven't been released already.

... or just in a format that we are capable of watching. I don't want to start anything but I have 3 methods of watching dvds including an Xbox 360. None of them are capable of playing blu-ray. I'm not about to get a 4th player just so I can watch blu ray. I think if this was released on dvd as well gameplayer951 and myself would be perfectly happy to buy it.

Am I missing something here?

Trying to sound as non-sarcastic as possible, if he released it just on DVD, it wouldn't really be "RAW HD!". If you don't have a Blu-Ray player, obviously this isn't for you, but I know that if I buy one down the line, i'll definitely be getting this (and any future volumes!)

Yes. What you are missing is that this is a whole new TPR video series on Blu-Ray and not a "port" of a RAW DVD on Blu-Ray.

We never said we would stop making DVDs, and about 30% of this Blu-Ray is HD footage that was released on RAW 4 down-converted to standard def DVD already. And about 20% of the footage are coasters that were featured on past RAW DVDs that we have re-shot in HD. So even though those coasters have been released before, this is all new "never before seen on a TPR video" footage.

It would not be possible for me to re-release this exact same Blu-Ray on DVD without hearing complaints that we have duplicate footage or coasters that have already existed on other Raw DVDs.

That being said, it's entirely possible that some of the "never before released coasters" (which makes up at least 1/2 of this Blu-Ray) may be released on some future RAW DVD in standard definition.

RAW 5 will most likely be a special "Asia" disc, and then RAW 6 will be back to traditional coasters from all the footage we capture this summer.

By the end of this year there will end up being 6 volumes of RAW on DVD and only 1 on Blu-Ray. So don't get your panties in a knot too much...you DVD people still have the upper hand!

Yes, you are correct. The FX-1 Shoots 1080i. I'm well aware of that fact. But my AX2000 shoots 1080p, and there is a mix of footage. I'm not exactly sure what the point of you stating that was, so I assumed it was some kind of criticism.

I was addressing "Guy T. Koepp" initially regarding 1080p. When he mentioned it was shot in "1080p, which makes it 2 times better than 1080i.", I was interested in the camera used. It really had little do with my knowledge of them. The idea of HD coaster footage is exciting, and sparked my interest as a coaster fan and HD production enthusiast. Theme Park Review deserves kudos for producing such a product.

^^^ Well he was just asking if the particular segment would be released on something other than blu-ray. He may not necesarily be "cheap" and "want things for free"as Robb suggested, he may just not have a blu-ray player.

edit: Also, thank you for the explanation Robb. As always, everything TPR does makes perfect sense! I think he was just curious if the particular segment would be released on something other than blu-ray.

No, no...I totally got that. One thing you might not realize but "behind the scenes" at TPR we get dozens of emails or messages every day asking "When are you going to post such-and-such segment from your DVDs?" and my response is always the same - "If we released every segment we produced, no one would buy the DVD, and then we'd have to shut TPR down."

People completely under-estimate exactly how much things cost to be able to put together. For example, this entire Blu-Ray project. The reason why we have limited our initial run to 75 copies is that is actually about the number we need to sell in order to break even on this whole Blu-Ray project and everything we have purchased to date in order to produce this video. That includes - 3 Blu-Ray Burners, 1 Blu-Ray Player, 2 SATA Cards, 150 Blu-Ray Test Discs, Upgrades to computer software, upgrades to hard drives, 75 Blu-Ray cases, 75 Blu-Ray blanks, the ink needed to press the labels onto those discs, postage to send out those Blu-Ray test discs, etc, etc... That doesn't even include cameras, memory sticks, etc, etc... In theory, that first Blu-Ray disc we ship out will have cost TPR about $2,000 to produce. And we are selling it for $24.99. I think that's quite a deal!

If the Blu-Ray sells well, we will continue to make more. But it's already such a huge investment for us that I want to limit the quantities before spending any more money!

We try! I aim for high quality as often as I can, and while it may not seem to add up on the surface, people just gotta trust that we know what we're doing and we won't release something that sucks. I think we've got a pretty good batting average so far!

I completely understand not releasing everything for free, that just wouldn't make any sense.

I think we're just asking for the opportunity to buy it on dvd instead of blu-ray which you explained will continue.

Thank you!

Upgrading everything to Blu-Ray is really expensive! I'm really glad that you guys decided to go for Blu-Ray! That's a heck of a lot of coasters too, I can't wait to watch them all!

In regards to 1080i and 1080p it really doesn't matter what it's shot in it looks exactly the same. (Don't try to say that 1080p is 'technically' better because the naked eye can't tell the difference) And I really could care less what Robb shot the freaking footage in, all that matters is that he shot the footage and is kind enough to mass produce it for all of us to buy! I can't imagine putting together that many DVDs and Blu-Rays.... Thanks Robb and Elissa!

You are absolutely right! I have put footage I shot with my 1080i camera and my 1080p camera right next to each other on my 46" HDTV and I can't tell the difference. I'm convinced that anyone who says they can tell the difference...are lying. Flat out laying to make themselves look more knowledgeable.

Thank you! It's nice to hear some appreciation for what we are doing instead of having a bunch of people bitch and complain like whiny babies as soon as we announce something. A hell of a lot of work went into this project and it really, REALLY sucks to have a bunch of people complain or question what you do. You know what? We could have just as easily NOT put this together.

Thank you again! It's people like you that we put the effort into this site for. Not the complainers.

Just placed my order! I am sporting a tremendous woodie in anticipation of this little blue disc that will soon arrive in my box, and bring new meaning to my life as I know it.

I thought the thread overall supported and lauded Theme Park Review's venture into the HD Blu-Ray space. The additional, associated production costs seem daunting; making this "labor of love" all the more more commendable. Unfortunately, my mention of a camera seemingly sullied this thread. I can understand the desire for HD content delivered via means other than Blu-Ray, but the cost must be outrageous. TPR might be able to overnight a disk via courier overnight cheaper. I love all things HDTV, and would leave any debate over format superiority to those at AVSForum.

How many coasters feature the actual RAW sound of the coasters without screaming?

The one clip you provide has a almost-sarcastic screaming that plays through the whole ride. Do they all have these or do most of them have just the pure RAW sounds of the rides?

To be honest, I haven't made a list. The camera picks up whatever is going on around you. That is what is "RAW" about it. What goes into the camera, goes out to your TV screen.

Sorry I don't have any more information beyond that.

--Robb

EDIT: I just re-watched the two clips and I have NO IDEA what you are even talking about! The Georgia Scorcher segment has NO screaming in it whatsoever, and the Rampage segment has a few "wheees!" and "Ooooh!" in very few spots! Are you SURE you watched the sample clips from THIS Blu-Ray? Because what you are describing isn't even close to what is on the audio track of those clips.

One more question...

Are the videos shot in the fuller-screen 1.78:1 aspect ratio or the smaller 2.40:1? Just curious and I'm excited to see this! I've been waiting for HD POV footage for a while now!!

^ I honestly don't know the exact dimensions. I'm not that technical when it comes to this stuff. They look pretty full screen to me! My HDTV doesn't have to stretch them or anything if that's what you're asking. All I know is that everyone I've sent the test discs to have thought the footage looked AMAZING!

^ Absolutely. The videos do look AMAZING!!! I have no clue what the aspect ratio is, but it filled my entire screen. It is incredibly clear, and very well done. I tend to like the coaster expedition videos better, but this Blu-Ray video is definitely at the top of my list. You will not be disappointed! The USH Mummy segment alone is worth it!

Ok cool...that's what I meant. Like some movies where it's HD but it still has the black bars on top and bottom even on a widescreen TV cause it's 2.40:1 aspect ratio...

So yeah I'm thinking it must be 1.78:1 which is awesome cause that's maximum screen usage!! I can't wait to get mine!!
