A113 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Robb, what would you say about the first turn versus Goliath's Death Helix, and the drop in the back versus Perilous Plunge? (If not obvious, those are the rides with the most intense moments I've been through). I just don't rate coaster elements, sorry. Call me a bad coaster enthusiast or whatever, but I can compare overall coasters to one another but comparing one coaster element to another completely different coaster element (A first turn compared to a helix? huh???) and then to a water ride??? Sorry, just not my thing. But my overall feeling? I think Goliath is one of the lamest hyper coasters ever built. And Perilous Pluge? WTF? It's a water ride. I haven't been on it since the year it opened. --Robb Sorry for the lack of clarification, but I was asking how the G-Forces on the first turn compares to the Death Helix, since that's the most forceful thing I encountered positive G-wise, and the backrow of Perilous Plunge is the most intense drop I experienced Negative G-wise. I wasn't comparing the rides in general, just the intensity of the elements. I hope that made a bit more sense.
robbalvey Posted April 3, 2010 Author Posted April 3, 2010 (edited) ^ No, I get it. I'm just unable to compare them, sorry. It would hurt my feeble brain too much! Edited April 3, 2010 by robbalvey
A113 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 That's okay. I just wanted to know what I'm going to have to expect this summer!
Columbia Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Intamin seems to have a penchant for making tighter and tighter transitions on their attractions (See: Maverick, El Toro) Robb, did you find the transitions "violent" or were they actually quite tolerable? Seems from the video that they're "snappy." Without OTSR's - that might be frightening. Then again, I don't want to sound like one of the haters who still haven't rode it... Too late.
pkdcoaster Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 For those curious about backlot's trains...they did lose the BMW license. so this is what the train looks like now. JEFF yuck
A113 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 (edited) And what is the reason to losing the awesomely themed Mini Cooper cars? I demand an explanation! Edit: BMW? And a license? Explain please Edited April 3, 2010 by A113

Seems from the video that they're "snappy." Without OTSR's - that might be frightening. Then again, I don't want to sound like one of the haters who still haven't rode it... Too late. Once again...and I think I've written this like 5 times in the last 20 pages, I didn't have a problem at all with the restraints. The transitions were fine. Totally awesome. Completely smooth. Very enjoyable. I'm really not convinced this ride would actually better with lap bars only. This doesn't seem like one of those rides that would really benfit from it. If anything I was glad that I had something to grab tightly onto! And It just doesn't matter that much to me. I don't get why so many people made such a huge deal out of it. Personally, I think there are many people out there who flat out don't like OTSR restraints and will say a ride is terrible with them even if they know damn well it's just fine. And I305 is just fine with these restraints. I sat at the exit ramp for about an hour today shooting video and probably had a good thousand people walk by me. I heard a ton of comments about the ride and I don't recall anyone complaning that the ride was rough. Stand at the exit of Gouderix and see if you get the same results! --Robb
U2Rox Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 OMG!!! Watching this video.... I might just have to change my summer plans!! Good thing I haven't booked anything! I had a dream about Behemoth the other night. I305 might just cure my Fix! I'm already planning distance, hotels, flights out of Richmond... Agh... I want to ride Great Footage!! Got me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside!!! Thank You!!

Explain please Really? You actually need this explained??? What ever happned to the IQ test we required of our readers before registering for TPR? I gotta get that feature fixed! --Robb "You should go compare the back axel of the third car of the non-BMW licensed train to the foot of a chicken." Alvey

A113 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Let me reword that. Since when was there a license? And I was confused by pkd's post.
pkdcoaster Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Parks pay money to use another company's product on an attraction (nickelodeon,Scooby doo, Italian job/mini coopers) AKA a license Rather than pay BMW for the privilege of using mini coopers likeness on the coaster CF decided to save some coin and turn them into generic coaster cars. like the ones in the pic. JEFF
A113 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Didn't know that. I had my GP moment of the day. Thanks for the clarification

ajm1240 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Robb just checked in with me and said that the crew has been doing a fabulous job today and even with a full queue the wait time has only been around 30 minutes! Hopefully they can keep that up! The "First Team" (Morning Hours) was AWESOME. A full queue spilling out onto the "Winner's Circle" only took them 45min to an hour to run through. The "Second team," in the afternoon, was not as good. Particularly with the Single riders line. The "first teamers" did not give single riders any choices. They pointed you to the empty spot and you went. However, in the afternoon, I must have seen 3 "Couples" in the single riders line ask to be seated together and the Ride op seemed to never be able to say no. The op then got heated questions from several folks in the main line and she had no answers for them. She did not seem to totally grasp the concept of a SINGLE riders line. This was at the height of the crowd in mid-afternoon. To be fair, this is the fist coaster in the park with a single riders line, so I suppose it is going to take some time for ALL the ops to get up to speed. Overall, this is the best coaster I've ever ridden. It is short in duration, but there is NO downtime on this ride. Heck, in the front row you even get airtime cresting the lift hill! Great meeting Robb. He mentioned that the wind in the front was messing with his contacts on media day. And later in the afternoon I heard a lady say one of her contacts blew out of her eye! Just something to keep in mind. Also, glasses straps are required, although, I saw many slip by. Or as the PA announcer said on my first ride "Glasses and Sunglasses must be removed. Unless you have a strap-on..." You can't make this stuff up! -Big_Al
JEAPUgrad Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 OMG, people are finally talking about the actual time length of the ride. It's high, it's pretty, it's intense, we get it. But it's SHORT and uneventful! Uneventful is one thing this coaster is not. I'm totally not impressed. But if all it's going to do is zig-zag, I can do the same thing on I-95 here in south Florida, where everyone has $100,000 cars. And go FASTER and be more thrilling! I'm with the minority, the OTHER Intimidator looks way better! Since we're forming opinions based off looks and not the actual ride...well, I won't bash you...but you can see where I'm coming from.
Homeboy23 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 ^^ That was my complaint in the afternoon. When I went into the single rider line about 3 I saw this group of six in there, a group of three and two friends. Definitely not a single rider lane there, but that is not all the line assigners problem. It is the problem of the employee at the entrance of the line. In the morning the employee at the entrance stood in front of the line, while in the afternoon it was left wide open.
Lenaapple1974 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Come on dude, don't try and rain on their parade. They're excited, let them have it. Well, I was. But the complainer thing just always gets my goat. /And also, there's no Santa. LMAO Erik...I loved that comment. I will be nervous as all nelly going on this in August. (Yes, really!) I am not a big drop person. I finally just accepted the drop on Nitro last summer. This is what, 100 ft more? LOL. I will get on it... seems to be quick enough down the drop. My worry is of course, the grey/blacking out. However, for all those that said the same of Manta's last row, that is where I was put when I got to ride, and was fine. Looks great!! Lena "who also loves the twisssstttyyyyyy elements" Messana
robbalvey Posted April 3, 2010 Author Posted April 3, 2010 Here's the official Press Release from opening day and a downloadable version of the POV: http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/kingsdominion/43350/ --Robb Alvey www.themeparkreview.com
robbalvey Posted April 3, 2010 Author Posted April 3, 2010 I've also just posted a bunch of offride shots taken from all around the ride: Enjoy! --Robb
KDCOASTERFAN Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Nice work Robb,in just a couple hours I'll be at the park riding this thing.
Ledgy Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Awesome footage. Thanks Robb I affiliate! As good as always or even much better in HD! Looking forward to the "Roller Coasters in the RAW - VOL5" (hopefully in HD footage)
OldJJman Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Love the latest offride shots Robb!! Nice looking ride, though I need to get used to watching the 8 car trains. Love how they navigate the "twistys". Looks cool.
jmicha Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 This ride looks a lot better than it did in the rendered POV. The pacing is ridiculous looking. I wish I was closer to Kings Dominion...
