PhishyBrewer Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 The beer at BJ's sucks, but the pizza is the best I ever had. Ignore the thumbs up. Because these beers tasted like crap!!!
DerekRx Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 ^Ahem on that! So now that I'm back home, yesterday was a day of credit whoring and beer drinking in the Delaware/Maryland area. The main reason for the trip was of course Dogfish Head, maker of some fine ales. Dogfish Head was an awesome brewpub, highly recommended if you're in the Rehoboth area, or even just passing thru on your way to OCMD And at the bottom of the beer, the 90 minute IPA (their imperial) really kicked in the hop action The bock was still good, with a little hint of hops at the end Finally, I had the Bock and Tan, half Expresso Bean, half 90 minute IPA The Zwaanend'ale was a really sweet Rye Bock The difference between the Expresso Bean Bock and the Lawnmower Light And whoa does it taste like it too! A mix of coffee, chocolate, and beer Next up, the Espresso Bean Bock, a bar only exclusive. Smells like coffee Trying the crab bisque since I'm at the shore and all Dogfish Head was calling my name, literally! First up, the Aprihop. IPA plus summer apricot goodness equals awesome I'll start off with the "Un-food Menu" Its pretty much the "Welcome to Rehoboth!" sign, being right at the start of downtown
niiicolaaah Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Mmm, coffee and chocolate flavoured beer... where do i sign up??
DerekRx Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 After Dogfish Head, I hit the amusements. But after that was over....it was Back to Dogfish Head! And I was thirsty, so I had to have a drink, this time the 60 Minute IPA. Great stuff I don't know how, but I just started walking and got back here
DerekRx Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Today on the way home, I decided to stop at Stoudt's. Originally my plan was to stop off at Victory, but my driver and the "I grew up in this area, I know where I'm going, we'll take a shortcut" mentality put us way away form Victory. Oh well, Stoudt's is always a good alternative. And that will go great with some Bratwurst and cabbage Where the Weizen was on tap for the summer Back to my local brewery
DerekRx Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I'm still missing the Victory brews I was supposed to have today, so now I'm having the Prima Pils! This'll hold me over until I can get back to Victory, or at least until 8pm tonight If only this could transform into a robot, it'd be called Optimus Prima
Robgraves Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 This evening we decided we wanted a little meade, so we ran down to the store to find some and lo' they also had a sale on a German Beer i had not tried called Warsteiner....sooooo we bought some of that too... quietly contemplating... does waiting till after 5 PM to start drinking count if you woke up at 4:30? mmmm.... fuels me viking blood it does! Warstiener.... damn good for a pilsner.
memphish Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Besides, why would I bring what I normally drink when I go someplace new and get experience new stuff. Because sharing is caring when you're with friends.
memphish Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 DRx have you had New Belgiums? I was going to ride over the river and grab some, to bring up. I'll be stopping and picking up some Yazoo in Nashville also on our way to Indiana, since I've yet to go up there and try it.
DerekRx Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 ^Oh you meant for swapping! Yeah sure, just PM me and let me know what you want and if I have it or can get it, I'll bring it. Sadly, not too many places around me carry microbrews in 6 packs, so I'm usually forced to get a case. I'll let you know what I want, I know New Belgiums Fat Tire has always been a good beer to me, but I'd be interested in trying out some other stuff, as well as some Terrapin stuff etc. But if its Lancaster, Victory, Troegs, etc that you're interested in, I've got that and should be able to bring a variety with me. I don't know if I can bring enough for everyone in the beer thread who will be at the event though!
CoasterFanatic Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I will be bringing some Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold in honor of Capt. Wally. Find me for some free samples
memphish Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Variety is good! Looks like Yazoo's tap room is closed until 4 on Sunday, so I guess I'll be grabbing whatever they have in bottles around town. I wish Sweetwater and Terrapin were distributed out here, maybe I can find some in Nashville. You like Belgian darks, or a wheat, or pilsner?
DerekRx Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 ^I'm really a fan of IPAs, followed by regular Pale Ales, Wheats, and seasonal ales. Not too big into Belgians, not this time of year. Pilsners usually make me pee too much. I'll compile my selection sometime tonight maybe and let you know what I have. (Hopefully I won't drink it all before Friday!)
DerekRx Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Before heading out to do some landscaping, I like to unwind after work. Quite a fine Kolsch Ale, and a wonderful hint of summer Tonight's unwinding beer, the Curve Ball.
DerekRx Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 So while down at Dogfish Head this weekend, I picked up some other stuff of theirs, including some Vintage 2005 goods. I was excited to try some of the lesser produced DFH beers, so after some yard work and dinner, it was time for their barley wine, the Immort Ale. And its got a smokey finish, kinda tastes like bacon Whoa! That sure is a barley wine, talk about sweet Only released on April Fools day every year, the Immort boasts "luscious and complex, this smooth full-bodied ale reveals interwoven notes of maple, vanilla, and oak"
FlyerACE1 Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Firstly, let me say that Derek's Dogfish Head PTR has me even more excited now about our one day OC/Rehoboth Beach blitz in June! Can't wait! This past weekend Ellen and I made a Brewpub trip of our own. This place is quite possibly the closest brewpub to our house, J.J. Bitting Brewing Company is Woodbridge, NJ. It's about 30 miles door to door. Not super close but not bad either. The best brew they had was the Bitting's Black Magic, a German style dark lager known as a "Schwarzbier". For $25, I was able to take home a growler of it and 4 pint glasses. Not bad. So, on to the photos... Ellen finishes up my sample of X-Duff. She really enjoyed that one. For dinner it was a half rack of Barbecue Ribs. For appetizer we got a dish called Cajun Popcorn which was deep fried crawfish. X-Duff Beer was pretty good but I especially liked the story that Fox Network wouldn't allow them to use the original name- Duff Beer any longer. Here's a close up of the beer description place mat. The best brews in my opinion were the Victoria's Golden Ale, Avenel Amber and Bitting's Black Magic. Ellen tries the Raspberry Wheat Ale. I had to go with the beer sampler, featuring all 6 of the beers they had on top. And I'm excited to go inside! Ellen stands outside J.J. Bitting, the very standard old brick building style brewpub.
PhishyBrewer Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Anyone want to take guess at what I'm planting in my garden today?
mcjaco Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 That tiny voice in my head wants to say cannibus.......
DerekRx Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Hooray! Adam is still alive and drinking! Today is going to be another anticipated DogFish Head day! Ah! Much better when enjoyed outside on the patio Tastes good, but something is missing First up, the 90 Minute Imperial IPA
niiicolaaah Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Yesterday, I got together with some old friends from high school. Where did we go? Applebee's, of course. That's where everybody goes to catch up with friends. lol. Kelly and Missy also had the sangria, not sure what Amanda had. I had sangria, Ashly looks disgusted
DerekRx Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Continuing with the DFH theme of the night, next up will be another vintage 2005: The Midas Touch! And she really liked it! Trevor is just happy we saved him a donut I figured Nan the "Wine-o" may enjoy it, so I poured her a little... Wow! How sweet it is! Its kinda like a mead wine meets an IPA because it has some hoppiness at the end It smells a lot like honey and grapes, I think it'll be pretty sweet Supposedly this comes from an ancient recipe found in the tomb of the infamous King Midas
PhishyBrewer Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 That tiny voice in my head wants to say cannibus....... Well actually... your kind of right. Common Name: Hops Genus/Species: Humulus Lupulus Family: Cannabinaceae, the same family that includes Cannabis sativa/indica (marijuana).
DerekRx Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 Before washing the car tonight, I decided to enjoy a Troegs. Goes down easily, now to wash the car Hooray for HopBack!
DerekRx Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I needed some refreshment while watching the Idol finale. What did the Dr. order? The Devil knows how to keep me happy while I'm suffering through lots of bad singers and cheesy skits while waiting to hear Chris and checking out McPhee Why HopDevil, of course!
