However, we did take the time to check out our favorite German restaurant, Old Heidelberg in Bethel, CT. And German restaurant means great beer and great food so here are a few shots. It took me my entire meal to finish the stein but I did it! Next German experience? Perhaps the Festhaus at BGW in a few weeks? Can't wait! Giant Beer and potato pancakes GOOD!! Apparently Wally shipped one of his Warsteiner glasses to Old Heidelberg. Here you can see the clear separation between beer and syrup. Gotta love the pretty colors! Ellen tries something different- Berliner Weiss mit Schuss. Essentially it's a wheat beer with raspberry syrup added. Gotta say, I absolutely loved it! The Germans love beer in excess and that's why I love the Germans. Here is my giant stein of Schwelmer Bernstein, a German amber ale served on tap.

Yesterday I couldn't keep anything down, so I didn't even bother trying a beer, didn't want to waste good stuff. Today I'm a little better, so its time to go back on the bottle! Chicken soup as the food, HopDevil as the beverage My medication, "Take 12oz of HopDevil at least once a day as needed"
Rugged One Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Tried another one of the Brooklyn brews that Derek hooked me up with. The Brooklyn Winter Ale. This one was pretty much par for the course as far as winter ales go. Malty and a little sweet. Decent enough I suppose.

First time I had one of those it was filled with Spaten Oktoberfest (a top 10 in my book) and I was in my glory (it's also quite a work out). Still, I don't think anything can top the German "boot". A friend of my fiancee's once downed one of those on his own. As seen in the Dells at the Essen Haus, it's supposed to be passed around the table and each person takes a sip and passes it. Anyone interested in a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA Boot Challenge?? Good God!

Hot Shot ESB was pretty much like every other ESB I've had, its pretty much as light as I'll go, though this one also had the screwed up super-foam head. It must be from the change in altitude. It was just an "meh" beer. But thanks for the brews, Heath! No, that is not whipped cream on top of my beer

Tried something new from Flying Dog Ales in Denver. A brewery that I happen to really enjoy. The Gonzo Imperial Porter. This is the tribute beer to late, great Hunter S. Thompson and was quite tasty as well. The Gonzo Imperial Porter. Complex and crazy. Just how I like 'em.

Then it was on to something new. The Hoptical Illusion IPA from Bluepoint. This one kind of toned down the hops in favor of some tasty citrus and floral notes. I'm definitely going to have to revisit this one soon. First I knocked back a Pyramid Hefe.

I ended up selecting the Spaten for the evening, with a glass of pinot grigio with the meal, lobster cakes! And frozen Gran Marnier souffle for dessert! mmmm, Lobster cakes Free beer sure hits the Spaten!

Then it was over to Tom's for some drinking! And I finished off the night with a Dogfish Head 60 Min. Then I went with Tom's summer selection, Hoegaarden! Back at Tom's I started out with a Hop Wallop, since my supply is gone Going from IPA to Belgian White to IPA has my taste buds all confused
DerekRx Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 On Saturday we went to Victory because Tom was sad he couldn't join us 2 weeks ago. We didn't stay too long though because the weather was too nice to spend indoors drinking. On the way home we stopped at Shangy's, which is like the Pennsylvania SuperWalmart of beer! Finally the Smith's have visited Victory. And Tom couldn't decide which he liked the most; HopDevil Cask, jerk chicken sandwich, or homemade french fries Leann didn't realy enjoy the HopDevil Cask Somewhere in this room there is a Yeti on a beer run I then tried their pizza, which was decent We were starving, so this bruschetta didn't last long I was happy to start out with an Uncle Teddy's Bitter Tom wasn't too happy until after he got his Mad King's Weiss We arrived just after a bus tour had left, lucky us!
DerekRx Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 After returning home, we enjoyed the warm weather, and since we were in the US, we couldn't possibly visit an amusement park! So, we sat around outside for a bit, drank, and then went to a party when it got dark out! Crazy Jake decided to host a party because it was a day ending in a Y, and thanks to Tom, he's been converted to a beer enthusiast. Definitely something I like, just add lemon and warm weather. Time for me to try this "amazing" beer Crazy Jake knows what it takes to get on TPR...beer! More specifically, Paulaner!
