CARS! The Car Super Thread

Recommended Posts

Of your choices, I've got 'em in this order: Civic, Corolla, Fiesta, Fit, Yaris. Not a big fan of Mazda, and most Nissans.

Thanks for your input...I have also been looking for a new car and some of these were my options. I currently have a 2002 Saturn SL1 that I have soaked over $2,000 in repairs in the last two months (head gasket & oil pump) and it still has a tapping noise in the engine. When the service manager at the garage basically tells you the engine is sh%t, it's time to get rid of it even though it only has 69,000 miles and is in otherwise excellent condition.They have tried to figure out the problem and other than pulling the engine to change the bearings, the mechanics didn't know what else to do.

Can you tell me your reason why you don't like Mazda? I really like the looks of the Mazda 3 & 6, but I am not overly familiar with their products. I need to do more research on these, but was curious of your opinion.

And she loved the Corolla S.

I was also drawn to the Corolla S and have read and heard great reviews (other than the Toyota travesty from earlier this year) on the internet and from people I know from work. A very sharp, sporty looking car!

So far, the cars that have caught my eye (at least what could possibly be in my price range):

* Toyota Corolla S

* Honda Civic

* Honda Accord (not really in my price range, but damn the reliability factor is certainly inviting!)

* Mazda 3 & 6

Basically, I am looking for something that is good looking, has a moonroof, power windows/locks, Sirius/XM capabilities with a good speaker system, good gas mileage, decent power (doesn't have to be a speed racer though), excellent reliability...and has the ability to fit three golf bags (cart bags) in the trunk!

^Check out the Kia Soul. I bought one last year and it is AWESOME. Since my other car is a Toyota MR2 Spyder, I needed somthing that could transport, well, anything. The Soul is quick, gets great gas mileage, has the 100K mile warranty, Sirius, Ipod, Bluetooth, Moonroof, Flashy Speakers , looks cool and can fit things in the back.

Just some food for thought.

^I was looking at either the Kia Forte or Optima. I did look at the Soul, and at first it was a little to "boxy" for me. However I've been seeing more and more of them on the road and I am falling in love with it. I think I found my next car!

Not to mention badass hamster commercials. The one making fun of the Xb & Xa is hilarious.

I'd suggest not dwelling on the sound system too much - worst case scenario, you can put together a pretty good system for $500 or so, which is less than you'd often pay for it as an upgraded option on a new car

And f*** the hamster commercials

Hmmm...I might have to check one out - my partner has a Kia Sportage and loves it. I had considered one myself except they are a little bit out of my price range unless I went used. I should definitely look at some of their other models like the Soul.

Well, I guess my answer was really more in response to what I thought Matt's needs were. In terms of just "toting around town," I'd lean towards reliability first. But now it seems that his wife is leaning more towards sportier than just a reliable quality "grocery getter." That definitely brings the Mazda 3 into play over the others, in my opinion.

I've had plenty of friends displeased with Mazda over the years. They always seemed a bit overpriced for what they offered, but they're slowly winning me over in recent years. I'd probably still go VW over Mazda, but the 3 is a pretty nice ride.

Off topic, a detailer friend of mine just finished work on a 458 Italia (scroll to top).

My grandparents are looking at a new car right now. A sales person brought them a 2010 Chevy Malibu LTZ to show them. Loaded to the max. But with how my grandpa is, he nixed it. I suggested an Equinox because it is higher up then the Malibu, but not too high I would think. He didn't like the gear shifter in the center, but I said that most cars now of days have them there. He also didn't like all the bells and whistles. Nice thing is that Chevy apparently has a lifetime power train warrenty.....wish I had that on my 2001 Malibu, would still have it.

Yeah, I am starting to lean more towards the Corolla S now...the Mazda 3 looks nice, but you are right in that it is a little pricier. Plus the Corolla is pretty well known for it's reliability (for the most part) and still has the sporty look that I like.

I actually found a nice used 2010 S online out at Metro Toyota in Cleveland. I am contemplating on driving out there on Friday morning and trying to tie in an afternoon at Cedar Point. Even though we have a Toyota dealership here, their selection isn't very good. I drove through the lot today and didn't spot one Corolla S. Everything was Camry, Rav 4 and Prius!

This is my only beef with the 458 Italia - the location of the intake makes the car look a little "Lotus-y" with the bulges

Joe, the 458 is a gift from God. There are absolutely no flaws whatsoever, and it is not "Lotus-y." Have we got that straight?

By the way, you know I'm a staunch believer in rosso corsa, but damn, black makes a solid case on this one!

Consumer Reports was able to get their hands on the first Volt to come off the Assembly line in Michigan and took it out for a drive. After the 1st generation, when the prices come down a bit more i will be in the market for one for sure.

Ditto to the rosso, but the black you posted is still "meh" in my book. I like the contrast with the yellow bbk/logos, but otherwise, its just another normal color. Like silver BMWs... WHY are there so many silver BMWs? Its such a boring color. Especially silver on gray, way to announce to the world that you are lame as hell.

^ Ah, the F40. Probably the last purpose built Ferrari we'll ever see. Those are definitely highly sought after now, with almost a "cult-like" following. I never liked the design, but admired it for what it was....Enzo's final "F U" to everyone who thought Ferrari had lost a step.

It's a shame the Volt had to be redesigned from it's original conceptual look. It looks too generic now, but I still love the forwarding of technology.

Joe, you're right about silver BMWs. Maintenance wise, that color hides SO many flaws, but it bores me to death now.

^^^^I guess living in Michigan has some advantages. Around me theres someone (who I'm assuming works for Chevy) who I've seen driving around a Volt at least 3 or 4 times now. Its actually a fairly good looking car when I've seen it, and I would consider buying one in the future.
