Theme Park/Rollercoaster Documentaries

Recommended Posts

I have a Discovery one from around 1999-2000 on VHS that covers various new coasters of the time like the Thrust Air prototype (which would become Hypersonic), Medusa, Millennium Force, and Steel Dragon 2000. I'll have to hook up my VCR and go through a boatload of tapes to find out where it is.

I've been looking for 10 plus years for one documentary. It was one about Fun Houses during the original Thrills, Chills and Spills on the Discovery channel. I had it once on VHS, but no more. I know it is from 96-97.

I vaguely remember Thrills, Chills, and Spills. Why did Discovery stop doing it? Was it not all that popular?

I think they stopped producing it for two reasons: the first being that the parks were no longer able to add major coasters every other year due to the economy & post 9/11 impact on tourism & 2:Discovery channel developed an obsession with that american chopper garbage & decided to run memorial day marathons of AC in it's place.

Discovery used to have all around good programs such as their first ride/park documentary titled wild rides which debutted in 96 I believe but now the network has become just a complete waste of time what with the worldwide focus shifting from educational to reality based programming...they seem to have traded AC in for their latest obsession/craze all things crab fishing almost 24/7(cough deadliest catch cough) & I'm sick of it.

^ Those "reality" based shows are actually more entertaining than any coaster documentary that I've seen (with the exception of some of the older ones).

I've seen countless coaster documentaries and they're all the same. Sure they were fun to watch at first, but over time, as I learned more about coasters from lurking around CB, CF, and TN from watching those shows.

I can see POV footage online (or on a TPR DVD) if I really wanted to so there's no point in watching those shows for POV footage. On top of that, the POV footage online doesn't have annoying commentary to go with it.

And has anybody noticed that they pick the nerdiest of coaster enthusiasts to interview? For example they'd always pick that dude that calls every single coaster his number 1 for every single special. And I remember them interviewing a dude who loved SUF so much, he had his braces match the colors on the ride. Then there are the people that claim they've ridden the coaster 100,000,000 times and then brag about it... (I'm probably being a bit harsh here though since I'm posting here)

They'd also show the exact same specials over and over during the year or re-air previous specials from previous years. For the Disney specials, they just added footage from older specials (Doesn't Disney do this with their DVDs?).

So IMO, I don't really miss the specials that much.

^I 100% agree on the dork thing, they always seem to pick the biggest fanboys for a ride and it's always funny when I know more about a ride than the nationally broadcasted documentary about it. For instance when they say some ride had bone crushing g's and it's really forceless, or when they get the names of the elements wrong. I guess they are marketing towards the general public and not coaster nerds though.
