ParkTrips Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 To be fair, they were the only team in Florida when they started
coolhandluke Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 They won't be claiming the whole state a whole lot longer. They'll be the Miami Marlins once they move into their new crib where Scott's beloved Orange Bowl once stood. My Reds seem ridiculously young this year. They have some skill, but I'm not looking for a whole lot from them yet.
Hercules Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 As far as the Yankees talk - I grew up with tons of Yankees fans around me. Every year the same thing was said. "They spent so much money this year! They are totally going to win!" I hate that crap. As a Redskins fan I learned that you can spend all the money you want on a bunch of names, but when they are over the hill, choke under the pressure, or don't gel as a team, you won't win. The Yankees are still a circus. As for my Mets - They will go back and forth with the Phillies all year with the new bullpen doing a little better, but then choke down the stretch with K-Rod and Putz struggling along with the offense in September, missing the playoffs yet again.
AllenA07 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 As has been stated I'm going to wait to see if the Dodgers get Manny before I even attempt to make any predictions. Dodgers without Manny will be decent and have a good chance at the NL West and nothing more. If the Dodgers get Manny and some of our kids step it up a little (Kershaw is said to be a future Cy Young) then I think that we very well may be a real threat this year.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I hope to see the Pirates do some nice player development this year. I would like to see our guys in the minor leagues move up to the show and have the guys who are already in the show to start playing good baseball.
Jew Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 The Tampa Bay Rays won that division with how big of a payroll? The Yankees have been horrible with the most important aspect of the game: scouting/talent development. They can pay all they want for all of those names but they STILL have no pitching, and therefore still will not win crap. The funny thing is that once the Yankees (and Red Sox for that matter) saw the success other teams were having with young/cheap talent, they invested a ton of money in their minor league system. They actually have some decent talent in the minors now. The problem is they are too impatient to reap the benefits. If you are going to invest in your minor league system, you need to stick with that plan. You can't do what the Yankees do and trade away prospects or keep signing so many type A free agents that they don't have top draft picks. The Red Sox have had the most success sticking to their plan. The Rays broke out this past year. The Marlins always stay competitive sticking to that. The A's stockpile talent for runs every few years. Those are teams that all stuck to their plan of focusing on player development.
BeemerBoy Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 ^ Exactly. And if MLB ever implements (as it should) a cap, those would probably be the teams leading the way after it's in place because they understand how to use their whole system efficiently.
Sir Clinksalot Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jtdJJ5xdPmHiDwRVCRXWiAzZb7twD96J96KO1 LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers made a fourth bid for Manny Ramirez on Wednesday, this time offering the enigmatic slugger a $25 million, one-year contract with a $20 million player option for 2010. The player option came at the request of Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations who requested anonymity because talks are ongoing. The latest proposal is similar in dollars to Los Angeles' first offer to the free-agent left fielder this offseason, a $45 million, two-year deal with a buyout or a club option that was ignored by Boras and later withdrawn by the team. This offer, however, gives Ramirez a chance to determine his fate in 2010. He could stay with the Dodgers for a $20 million salary or decline the option and become a free agent again. Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch confirmed that general manager Ned Colletti, owner Frank McCourt and Boras met Wednesday in Los Angeles and an offer was made, but Rawitch declined to provide further details. The Los Angeles Times first reported details of the offer on its Web site Wednesday. Ramirez rejected a one-year, $25 million proposal from Los Angeles three weeks ago. The team also offered him salary arbitration in December, but Ramirez turned that down, too. If Manny turns this down, he's an idiot. The Dodgers should have stipulated that this was the final offer.
Crazy4Coasters! Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 ^ If you only knew how I'm keeping my eyes open for the words "finalized" on this contract agreement. Dodgers got lucky no one else jumped in and got Manny sooner. I just hope Manny comes to play and does not start acting like he did his last year in Boston. Just twiddling my fingers until this thing goes through
Chris Benvenuto Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 Another question I have for everyone: What is your opinion on people who bandwagon when teams start to win? Believe me, my opinion is not TPR friendly in terms of vocab I have to use. SO, I'll save everyone the explanation. Unless, I edit it
ParkTrips Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I hate the majority of Braves fans for that reason. My favorite team struggles to sell tickets even when they do win, yet alone create a real bandwagon sensation
Sir Clinksalot Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 ^^^ Nobody else was really shopping for Manny. Sure there were rumors about the Giants, Angels, Yankees, Cardinals, etc. But I don't think any of them were actually serious. Did any other club even make him an offer other than the Dodgers? I don't recall any. IMO, if Manny doesn't take this offer, it's possible he won't be playing anywhere when the season starts.
sugart Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I reaally dont have an opinion on bandwagon fans. Here in Philly we love our teams to death, and the rest of the country hates us. Dont have to worry about people hopping on.
BeemerBoy Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 IMO, if Manny doesn't take this offer, it's possible he won't be playing anywhere when the season starts. Japan?
Crazy4Coasters! Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 ^^^ Yea no one gave a serious bid for Manny other than the Dodgers, but I was a tad nervous of some club popping out of the blue to offer Manny a deal. I heard that if the deal were to go through they would probably wait until Friday to announce it for some reason.
Jew Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I hate Frank McCourt. Speaking of wasting talent...the Dodgers just threw any potential Blake DeWitt had by signing yet another washed up veteran that serves no purpose (Orlando Hudson). It's a good thing the NL West is still a complete joke of a division....
Crazy4Coasters! Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 ^I agree, Dodger management is pretty much a dud with their operations. And signing Orlando Houston will probably do diddle squat for us this season, but I hope I'm wrong. And yes our saving grace is are weak division that we are currently in... I need Manny to sign soon so Dodger Blue can run rampant through my veins!
themeparkman25 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 ^Tell me about it, its almost depressing. Rockies traded their offense away and their closer...not going to be a good season.
bigstevet07 Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I'm looking forward to this season as the Phils defend the crown. They are pretty much the same team with the exception of Burrell gone. Ibanez is a pretty good replacement though. I'm not sure who will be the 5th starter. Kendrick should be if he can keep his walks down. I like Carrasco though and I hope he has a good spring. I predict they will either win the NL East for the 3rd straight year or take the Wild Card.
Hotlanta Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I hate the majority of Braves fans for that reason. My favorite team struggles to sell tickets even when they do win, yet alone create a real bandwagon sensation Most Braves are not bandwagon jumpers, they were just apathetic. I don't care how bad the Braves suck but my butt will be in the Terrace level at Turner Field for at least six to eight games every year. But i hate the fact that this year the Braves are forcing me to shill for some package to get ticket access to the Redsox and Yankee games.
Sir Clinksalot Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=ApQxVLFUr5s.VG0s9DK2fEMRvLYF?slug=txdodgersramirez&prov=st&type=lgns It’s back to the drawing board for Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers announced on Thursday that they had received a letter from Ramirez’s agent, Scott Boras, rejecting the club’s latest contract offer. This is the fourth time this offseason that Ramirez and Boras have rejected an offer from Los Angeles. “We love Manny Ramirez,” Dodgers owner Frank McCourt said, “and we want Manny back, but we feel we are negotiating against ourselves. When his agent finds those ‘serious offers’ from other clubs, we’ll be happy to re-start the negotiations. The Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday that the Dodgers had offered Ramirez a one-year deal worth $25 million plus a player option for 2010 at $20 million. “Even with an economy that has substantially eroded since last November, out of respect for Manny and his talents, we actually improved our offer,” McCourt said. “So now, we start from scratch.” The player option on the second year reportedly came at the request of Boras. I'm not a big fan of McCourt, but I liked his comment (bolded above)
Crazy4Coasters! Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I'm actually starting to hate Manny now... What does this bloody guy want??? Sheeeezzz
BelizeIt Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I bet Manny wants 4 years at $27.5 per.(equal to A-Rod per year). But, he may 'Settle' for 4 years at $25 mil per. I think we may see a three year deal worth $70 mil. 25/25/20 With that last year being Mannys option. That way after completing 2 years with the Dodgers, if he's still producing he'll opt out and sign a better contract elsewear. If his numbers decline, he can still finish out that 3rd year at a high $$$ rate.
ParkTrips Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Most Braves are not bandwagon jumpers, they were just apathetic. Compare crowds and support from a few years ago to that of the 80s, and that's what I'm talking about bangwagon*. * Yes I caught that typo but it was too funny to edit out

He's already come out and said he is done at 40, isn't he like 37 now? I'm not sure if all this is Manny's fault. I think a lot of this has to do with Boras. Remember Boras was the guy who had A-Rod opt out and then couldn't get what he wanted so A-Rod did the negotiations without him.
