The 2009 MLB Season

Recommended Posts

Most Braves are not bandwagon jumpers, they were just apathetic.

Compare crowds and support from a few years ago to that of the 80s, and that's what I'm talking about bangwagon*.

* Yes I caught that typo but it was too funny to edit out

The Redsox weren't exactly selling out Fenway pahhhhhk back when we they weren't much good. Every team will see more fans when they win. Even the marlins had more than ten people show up when they were winning.

That's true, everyone loves a winner, and people'd rather pay to see their team win than lose. I think its just exceptionally bad here in Atlanta.

As for the Marlins, they were in the bottom five in attendance in 2003. Last year was a winning year, yet they were dead last

Red Sox' lowest attendance in the past 25 years has been in 96-98 when the team was about .500 - still managed to draw ~28K per game, not a bad dropoff at all

Here's the reason why Manny hasn't signed:

An apparent sticking point in the negotiations is whether Ramirez will accept part of his salary as deferred payments, the Times reported, citing an unnamed source. The newspaper had previously reported that the team's latest proposal included deferred money.

Under the terms of the contract that Ramirez was offered by the Dodgers on Wednesday, he would receive $10 million in 2009 and another $10 million in 2010, if he exercised the option for a second season, the Times reported.

Ramirez then would be paid the remaining $25 million over the next three years, without any added interest -- $10 million each in 2011 and 2012, and $5 million in 2013, according to the Times' report.

Here's the reason why Manny's agent hasn't agreed to sign:

Fixed.

Seriously, my ultimate sports dream is to see players have to negotiate their contracts on their own.

I remember reading once where one of the old Celtics (Havlicek, perhaps?) negotiated his new contract while standing at the urinal next to Red Auerbach. It went something like, "How does x amount sound?" "That sounds fair to me." They washed their hands, shook hands, and done deal.

Ahh, the good ole' days.

I have absolutely no respect for Boras/Manny turning down 2 years/$45mil, either he doesnt want to play or is seriosly dumb. Next best offer being reported right now is 1 year $15mil from the Giants, the Dodgers are overvalue-ing him and Boras still thinks he can run up the price even more

^There was never any other offer. The Dodgers called Boras bluff, so Manny is stuck only making 45 million dollars over two years instead of the 100+ million over 5 years he wanted. Poor guy.

So the saga finally ends...

Dodgers, Manny agree to two-year deal

Long negotiation process ends with $45 million contract

By Ken Gurnick and Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com

PHOENIX -- The Dodgers have agreed in principal on a two-year, $45 million deal to re-sign free agent left fielder Manny Ramirez, a baseball source said on Wednesday morning.

The deal was closed, pending a physical, at a meeting in Los Angeles attended by Ramirez, his agents Scott Boras and Mike Fiore, Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, general manager Ned Colletti and manager Joe Torre, the latter duo both flying from Spring Training camp on Tuesday night for the session.

Torre and Colletti were already winging their way back to Phoenix this morning and are expected to arrive in time for Wednesday's Cactus League game between the Dodgers and Giants at Camelback Ranch.

The manager was summoned back to Los Angeles along with Colletti for what turned out to be the final negotiating session in a 4 1/2-month effort to get the free agent to return to the Dodgers.

Ramirez accepted the same deal the Dodgers offered last Wednesday -- two years, $45 million ($25 million in 2009, $20 million in 2010), payment deferred over five years without interest, with an opt-out clause after one season paid at $10 million each for the first four years and $5 million for the fifth.

But both sides indicated Tuesday night that the deal could not be completed until all primary parties met face-to-face in Los Angeles Wednesday. Ramirez flew in from Florida Tuesday night for the meeting.

Ramirez, 37 in May, originally sought a contract length of six years at a salary in the Alex Rodriguez neighborhood ($27.5 million a year). The Dodgers initially offered two years at $45 million plus a $15 million third-year option. They also offered salary arbitration, then made a one-year offer of $25 million before presenting an offer last week loosely based on the original two-year, $45 million deal, dropping the option year and adding the player opt-out clause at the request of Boras.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, it's April 1st...It's time for a HUGE BUMP.

Well, how did everyone see Spring training this year? any improvements, any upturns or downturns??

Opening night is 5 days away!! The offseason is ALMOST OVER!!! HUZZAH!!

Believe me, I will not let this thread die during the Season. It'll only die after the World Series this year.

I'm expecting what I always expect of the Jays.

Which isn't very much. I would love just to see them make the playoffs for once in 17 years, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I was going to buy the $95 season pass, but couldn't find anyone that wanted to go to the games with me.

Well, the new season starts today between Atlanta and Philly. I'm definitely looking forward to tomorrow, because it has been a tradition for me to skip school and go to the Ranger's home opener every year.

Also, George W is throwing out the first pitch. Should be interesting.
