ParkTrips Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 It's been a while since the last CWJ, but I hope this one was worth the wait. About 2 weeks ago my mom told me she wasn't going to be home for Thanksgiving. Bummer, since I have no other family nearby, I was on my own. Well, I decided to make the best of it and do my own Thanksgiving!! I cooked on Friday so that a few friends without lame families could spend Thanksgiving day with them and spend Friday with me instead of shopping So, a lot of money spent at Publix later... um yeah, no matter what I do, that won't work. Failure =( And thats all because I gave up, threw it away, and was content with brownies. Thanks for reading and I hope you guys are happy to see the pie fail because I was seriously bummed once I woke back up it was time to make the pie, which I totally can't follow instructions for. I sorta mixed everything together - both for the crust and the filling - at the same time. oops! Not long later, apparently I ended up in this position Corey, you sure you have enough food? Note beer #3 - Lost Abbey Inferno, great golden belgian time to sit down an eat after the bread and baked sweet potatoes were done Carving the turkey with an electric knife is so much more fun! .. take another drink first! Hm thats a big knife... I think I need to... The girl wanted mashed potatoes so she brought her own.. to which Corey added half a pound of pepper to another solid brew from Canada Time for another beer! Yup.. nice and done! ok its time for the bird to come out, cut it off Time to go inside to prep the rest of the meal, and remind certain SoCal residents where I do my shopping every week I was bummed they didnt have corn for me to shuck, that's half the fun =/ sweet, progress is being made!! Corey liked it a lot, but he's a christian, he's supposed to like the 10 commandments While waiting, I cracked open a bottle of Lost Abbey 10 Commandments, and it was an awesomely sweet and strong ale just oozing with honey flavor Somewhere around this point, I'm realizing I shouldn't have been wearing flip flops.. and that we needed to grab the cover fast! slowly dropping the turkey into the oil ok the turkeys good to go, the oil is warm... ok time to inject it with the juice "Kinda looks like afterbirth!" Found it! "It said there were two bags. Where's the other one??" .. to remove the bags of guts! Thanks God there were instructions, because otherwise we totally would have forgotten... but of course I had to give it a colon exam first Alright, time to get out the meat - we decided to go with the turkey. It was much easier to catch than the cat ok back inside to mix up the marinade.. garlic, pepper, hot sauce and some other stuff Four gallons of cooking oil and 30 minutes later, we'll be ready to cook oh crap, almost forgot to warm up the oil cat? Turkey?... or... Alright after slicing them, time to wrap them up a bit for later. Time to start preping the main course.. what will it be? FYI, peeling apples sucks. At least with an peeler, a sharp knife worked better OK back inside and I'm peeling apples for my pie. ok - apparently you're not supposed to use the fryer on a concrete surface like a driveway, yet its suggested to use it on a grassy area... which, if the grass doesn't catch on fire, the leaves sure will.. stupid I used some stuff I found under the sink to clean out the pot - Im not sure what it was, but it was strong and it worked!! Some of this stuff has been sitting outside in my back yard for years First, I needed to do some cleaning
emily>piers Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Nice one Gordon Ramsay! Dinner looks good and I always cheat and buy pastry!
Meteornotes Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 That was amazing, though I was really hoping for fire and an explosion at some point. And Wegmans > Publix. dt
disneygurlz2s Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Isn't it a little too late to make the pie AFTER dinner? Or was the delay just an excuse to drink more beer? Shari
gisco Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 This would have been so much better if the leaves caught on fire!
BelizeIt Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 As always I enjoyed your cooking trip reports. I never had a Deep Fryed Turkey before. How big was that bird, and how long does it take to cook it that way? It really looked tasty. So was 'the girl' (you didn't say her actual name) just the latest Notch in ParkTrips bed post, or are you 'just friends'.
Swimace Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Joe, that was great! I'm so hungry now, I love your CWJ reports!
ParkTrips Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 Isn't it a little too late to make the pie AFTER dinner? Did I do it wrong? I just figured dessert is supposed to come after dinner so baking the pie should too! I never had a Deep Fryed Turkey before. How big was that bird, and how long does it take to cook it that way? It really looked tasty. Deep fried is the only way to eat turkey 13 pounds - it takes 3 mins per pound to ocok in 350 degree oil So was 'the girl' (you didn't say her actual name) just the latest Notch in ParkTrips bed post, or are you 'just friends'. lol no... just look at what side of the table she sat on, I was just not using her name to protect the innocent Believe me my feet got a few nice splashes of oil.. it just hurts for a second, like a shot
TheRapidsNerd Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 As soon as I saw CWJ, I had to read it first. Glad you were able to get together with some friends and not be totally alone on TG. Always glad to see one of these TRs. BTW, did Mel and Rich ever get married, or are they still just going for that 3rd date.
BeemerBoy Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 we decided to go with the turkey. It was much easier to catch than the cat Can we also expect a Christmas edition?
ParkTrips Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 ^ Probably not because 1. My mom should be home so hopefully she will cook me a real meal and 2. cooking a real meal is far too time consuming and expensive to do it often Sorry
larrygator Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Rock on Joe, but like Elissa said blazing and blistered feet would have been nice.
dino Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Loved this TR . I just had to go eat leftovers after I read it.
DiSab Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Sweet PTR. Makes me crave some deep-fried turkey.
nay Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I'm glad that you chose to cook the turkey rather than the cat. And Wegmans > Publix. Wegmans rocks! Publix is pretty great too. Unfortunately there aren't any of either near me.
