TPR now FORBIDDEN on Navy Intranet

Recommended Posts

Thought I may bring this to some people's attention.

So throughout the summer, I have been working for the Navy, and have had access to Navy Marine Corps Intranet. Throughout the day (on my breaks of course ) I have enjoyed reading TPR to keep me sane at work.

Well, after getting back from the Behemoth trip, every time I try to access Theme Park Review, I get a Forbidden message! I know NMCI has cracked down on stuff in the past like personal email sites, and video sites, but what in the world did TPR ever do to join the ranks of this exclusive club??

Any other government employees noticed this?

WOW!!! Glad I left federal government employment before this happened! My office considered NMCI the devil incarnate anyway, but this HURTS! As someone who, for a LONG time (like almost 10 years), has really enjoyed the quiet (and the paycheck) of the overnight shift, TPR has always been my saving grace for staying awake, alert, and, well...I have to agree...sane.

Glad I rejoined the private sector when I did.

I just thought I'd add my two cents.

I wouldn't reccomend trying to use a proxy site or an unblocking site as they are usually blocked as well and when you try to get on a website and you're not allowed, the computer saves the URL to your security unit and they will keep a record of all the blocked sites you try to visit.

You're far more likely to get in trouble for using a site unblocker. Why not ask your security unit to take TPR off the list of blocked sites?

I go on TPR on a government computer all the time. At my dads office, in school, etc...

Since it has links to Youtube (Which is usually blocked on government computers) they might have blocked it for that reason.

And yes, I wouldn't use any proxy sites. The government won't stand for that and it could get you in a lot of trouble.

Same here.. My company uses site blockers, and sometimes when they update the list of sites, some sites are blocked when they are considered allowable. They do have a link to report sites that are accidentally blocked when they should be allowed and I've had sites that are blocked where they should be allowed and I reported it, and they usually unblock them.

Unlucky for you!

Luckily for me TPR is one of the few sites that isn't blocked at my school. The school normally blocks all forums, video sites, etc but somehow TPR has slipped through the net despite the far smaller forum southparks.org being blocked.

^ That sounds about right. I never never NEVER (emphasis on never) had a good experience with NMCI, and nor did I ever hear a good word about it from the active duty people in my office. Again, not all that heartbroken to have returned to the private sector.

If there's even the slightest chance of ANY site introducing something dangerous (virus, worm, security hole, Grace Jones in "View to a Kill") on to the same defense network that soldiers/sailors/marines use for vital mission info, it's likely to get blocked.

I accidentally stirred a hornets nest for downloading a few pictures from CoasterNet.com about a year and a half ago. The pics were innocent shots from 2 Frenchmen who toured the US east coast. Apparently, when I saved said pictures, this set off a flag in Washington DC, who contacted our local IT and said "Talk to this guy, NOW". A couple tense days and MANY security meetings later, I was cleared and thankfully NOT fired.

The IT guy explained that the network I was on was the same used by soldiers in Iraq. It can't have problems. Period. If it does, and they don't get vital info, it could cost lives, hence the multiple freak outs. The pictures I downloaded *could have* (but didn't after scanning) potentially virused the network and/or crippled it.

It's a bummer and I feel for you friend.

Our school has pretty much blocked everything except this site. Nearly every proxy sever we could find on yahoo (typing proxy into google came up with a forbidden message) was blocked. Even sites that our teaches ask us to go to during class are blocked half of the time. Stupid, eh.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN...MY COMPANY STARTED BLOCKING TPR TODAY!!!!

I should have known something was up when the IT guy was in the office yesterday installing an new computer looking thing from St Bernards iPrism company.

This doesn't make me very happy...thank goodness I have a valid work reason (myspace) to go to the library and use their computers. Since myspace is blocked (something about the amount of viruses) and I have a networking site on it...gives me an opp to jump on TPR...not as often as I prefer...now I have to do work.

I feel like I just lost a kidney.

(end rant)
