montezooma
Here is another Souvenir Book from the year that the Demon opened. A few things have changed at the parks since opening season. The addition of Pictorium & Sky Trek Tower to Carousel Plaza. The wonderfully themed Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop, Tidal Wave, was added to Yankee Harbor and of course the transformation of the Arrow Turn of the Century into the Demon. netdvn
Thank you for posting these Shane. I was waiting for this update since you announced it. However, the update is SO photo-heavy, that my computer cannot display all the images at once causing most of the pics to appear broken. I'm gonna try to view the rest of the pics on Monday from my school's computer. And again, thank you for posting these. Its so cool seeing both MGAs back when they first opened. Keep it up. Dan Thanks Dan. Yes this is HUGE (insert "that's what she said" joke) and there is still more to come. Lots of pictures, information and video and it really takes a LONG time to download all this stuff on my computer too. I am hoping that Robb of one of the moderators can do a page break between each one of the posts so it wont be so much information on on page...is that possible????? larrygator
^Shane - unfortunately I don't think the mods can do anything to help in that regard. Robb may have an idea , when he returns home and has full internet access. He has special administrator powers that the mortal mods don't.
montezooma
That is fine. I forgot that Robb was out somewhere exploring the world. Do those guys ever just sit home and watch TV?
Olsor
Great stuff, Shane! This really brings back memories. I grew up going to the recently un-Marriotted Great America in Gurnee. I still vaguely remember things like the Eagle's crew wearing old-timey outfits with pinstriped shirts and sleeve garters. And I really miss how Tidal Wave used to look at night with its cool light package. And I really miss Sky Whirl...

I was away form the computer (or Blackberry) for over 24 hours in a row until I got back from Knoebels yesterday. No I really watch TV, without the laptop booted up at the same time. cycamps
That was the best post you've ever made (in my opinion ) I absolutely love seeing old GAm stuff, and that was full of it. I was surprised by how much I hadn't seen before. Thank you very much for posting!
montezooma
Thanks so much Shane! I love your updates! -Tatum "How much longer 'til the Astroworld stuff? " Sorry Tatum, I know you are waiting for the AstroWorld stuff. I was waiting to get it all together and do one HUGE post but I have just moved and things are still in boxes. Maybe for the Season Finale of Shane's Amusement Attic this year I will do a portion of what I have on AstroWorld.

montezooma
Can't get enough Marriott's Great America???? Well here is another Souvenir Book from those GREAT Marriott years! So many things about these two parks were GREAT when they first opened. They truly were a full themed experience. You can see from these souvenir books how each themed area offered rides, shows, food and merchandise that were unique to the theme. You wouldn't see a Panda Express in Yankee Harbor back in those days.
redfoot12
Love the old pics. Does anyone know what the Great America park would have been like in the DC area, or even where it would have been located? I wonder if there are any old blueprints... netdvn
^ I believe it was supposed to be located in Laurel, Maryland (which is where my aunt and uncle live).
montezooma
^^ and my guess is that it would have been exactly the same as the two other parks.
Mark Rosenzweig
^^ and my guess is that it would have been exactly the same as the two other parks. And probably would have also been purchased by SF/Bally.
netdvn
Shane, I've tried viewing the update from my school's computer and I've encountered the same problem with extremely slow load-times and broken picture links. And on top of that, my school's connection is high-speed. I suggest you follow the format of your previous updates and you should continuously post updates once a day for a week or two instead of uploading a huge amount of pics at once. That way those of us with slow connections can view the pics with no problem whatsoever. Dan

I wonder if there are any old blueprints... A wee-bit of Disney's America Research here... which DOES apply... There were TWO sites selected for GAm DC- One in MD and One in PRINCE WILLIAM county, VA (West of DC Metro Area)... NOT too far from where Disney's America was to have been based. The same NIMBYs as before- but two plus decades earlier. It's a shame, too- as I think had GAm been built, DC would have been spared SFA! (Sorry- couldn't resist!) I think Wild World would have still operated as a small waterpark/amusement park back in the '80s, but odds are it wouldn't exist today.
