Tucker and Dale vs Evil

OMFG ... one of the funniest damn movies I've seen in awhile. I had heard some awesome things about it but for one reason or another I just kept putting it off. Not sure why. Certainly recommended.

YES! That movie was friggen awesome! I was totally surprised and blown away.

Finally got around to watching my Dark Knight Rises blu-ray, thought it was OK at the cinema but actually liked it a lot more the second time around. At least as good as Dark Knight, and definitely a better third act.

I watched two movies over the weekend.

The first one was The 12 Disasters of Christmas. I love watching Syfy Channel movies; the sillier, the better. But lately, Syfy has been having a trend of them taking their movies waaay too seriously. The trailer for this and even the title itself practically guaranteed this would be an enjoyably stupid movie. Well, for the first half, it was. There were ridiculous deaths complimented by the crappy effects, and it was all bound together by the premise that the "12 Days of Christmas" song was tied in with Mayan Calendar event that was tied in with Biblical end of days prophecies; and to save the world, our heroes needed to find five golden r-i-n-g-s. It was genius! But, at around the halfway point, the movie began to focus less on the disasters and more on the totally bland human antagonist. I really don't understand why Syfy feels the need to put a bad guy in every movie! Shouldn't the titular phenomenon be the designated bad guy? But I digress, the ending was as clichéd, predictable, and as boring as a Syfy movie can get. Even the 12 disaster were disappointing; some were hardly "disaster" worthy, some were off screen, and I only counted a maximum of ten! Finally, the Biblical references were PAINFUL! The parents names are Joseph and Mary, their daughter (the "chosen one") is named Jacey, the bad guy is Kane, there is a traitor named Jude, and all the disasters happen in the town of Calvary.

The second movie I saw was Inglourious Basterds. I'm not too familiar with Quentin Tarantino's style of directing (I'm ashamed to say I have not seen Pulp Fiction and I've only seen bits of Kill Bill). While the plot is solid and it's an interesting take on history, what really captivated me was the storytelling, particularly the dramatic moments. Tarantino took his time with the film's tense moments, and they really felt more unnerving than if they had been rushed just to get to the next plot point. The first fifteen minutes was probably my favorite part of the whole movie. The acting choices were also really well done, particularly Mélanie Laurent as the runaway Jew. The only thing preventing me from loving this movie though is the ending. Our heroes are in a tight situation, but it really seems like it resolved itself too easily, especially for having such an intimidating antagonist. Also, some of the stylistic choices were...questionable. But overall, it's a good movie. It's not something I'd watch often, but the violence alone should guarantee a second watch from me some time in the future.

^I also watched the SyFy movie and I agree with you. Come on, it's December 2012, I was really hoping for some great apocalypse cheesey blow up the world flick...this was pretty bad.

Well, there's always this for you holiday-viewing pleasure:

Or, perhaps . . .

^I finally streamed it via Netflix earlier this year. It makes Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space and Bride of the Monster look like tragic works of genius.

^Yup, I saw it and I was really impressed. I have even higher hopes considering it is Christopher Nolan.

Nolan's just producing it. Zack Snyder is directing it.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Disney made the film to show how they're not just animated kids films. The motto of the film is "Every wish has It's price" and that's all I'll say. Not for kids!!!

The Hobbit

LOVED it. Maybe even more than any of the previous LOTR movies. Overall, very faithful to the book. I only have 1 or 2 MINOR quibbles. Some stuff not from The Hobbit, but stuff that fit's in the story line well from the ROTK Appendix.

"Riddles in the Dark" was absolutely amazing, just the way I always pictured it in my head. And the crowd reactions in this scene are just what you would have expected.

Anybody seen the Man of Steel trailer yet? Now I HATED the other Superman movies but this might change my opinion:

This is the only action hero movie I have wanted to see since Spiderman with Tobey McGuire.

Why would they call The Haunting in Connecticut 2.... The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia? It is happening in a completely different state!!!! I can see why a second was made, the first one made over $77 million but really they could have came up with a better name. Either way the trailer looks good.

I caught the "flat" version of Life of Pi today and really enjoyed it. Rather nice to see a "fantasy" flick that doesn't involve super heroes or orcs (although I am looking forward to The Hobbit).

One of my friends has been raving about Pitch Perfect so I watched it last night, pleasantly surprised. Kind of Mean Girls meets Bring It On meets Glee, except without Glee's relentless emotional angst and 'learning moments'. Very, very funny in sports and most of the musical numbers were solid.

The trailer for this has seemingly been in front of every film I've seen for the last three months, and based on that I got the impression it might be overly mawkish/sentimental - is that the case?

^ really been curious to see Pitch Perfect, might have to swing by red box and rent it soon for a laugh.

Toy Story 2 - probably my favorite of the 3 films, and as always a fun watch.

Going to see it tomorrow. Audiences seem to be singing their praises for it, so hopefully that is a big F-U to the critics. It didn't feel to stretched out? That's my biggest fear for it, I don't want to get bored because Peter Jackson just decides to have them talk for an hour between action scenes.

^ Didn't feel stretched out AT ALL. Granted, this is movie one, will be interesting to see what happens when it get's to movie 3 though.

I actually felt that the previous LOTR movies should have been 2 movies each (especially ROTK) so I'm glad they are doing it this way so we can get the full story. They didn't gloss over any of the important plot points from what is really only the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the book.

Being that the 2nd movie is the "Desolation of Smaug" and presumably movie 3 will begin with the battle of the 5 armies it will be interesting to see how they handle that. Hopefully the 3rd movie won't drag on like the last 45 minutes of ROTK.

You were right. Didn't drag on at all really. I was expecting them to make it much farther into the quest before the end (Thought they would end as they entered Mirkwood). Really loved the more lighthearted feel of the movie and no so dark and brooding. Can't wait for the next film!

I know that Les Miserables has had several screenings now. Has anyone found a site that compares the differences from the show to the movie? I kinda need to know what "surprises" may be in store for me before I see it.

^I would be interested in this information also. Movies of musicals can be a bit hit and miss - Chicago was great but Rock of Ages managed to ruin a very fun stage show.

The Les Miserables film soundtrack is now on iTunes. I've listened to it twice already and Les Mis die-hards be prepared for it to be very different from the show cast recording, but WOW, it's REALLY GOOD!

I absolutely love the new song!

I really was expecting to totally hate the soundtrack, but Eponine absolutely nails it (as she should since she's from the West End production), and the rest of the actors seem to pull it off better than I would have expected.

Looking forward to seeing the movie...

Glad to hear that! I haven't heard anything about it, and was pretty cautious given the casting, so I'm glad to hear a really positive review of it.
