GMAN962 Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 ANTIOCH, Calif. - Kim Mayorga was confused when her 2-year-old started making funny faces and pushing away the apple juice he had ordered at Applebee's. The explanation came when she opened the lid of the sippy cup and was hit by the smell of tequila and Triple Sec.ADVERTISEMENT The restaurant staff accidentally gave Julian Mayorga a margarita Monday. He grew drowsy and started vomiting a few hours later and was rushed to the hospital. "I wasn't going to make a big deal about it," the mother told the Contra Costa Times on Thursday, "but then he got sick." The apple juice and margarita mix were stored in identical plastic bottles, and the manager mistakenly grabbed the margarita container to pour the boy's drink, said Randy Tei, vice president for Apple Bay East Inc., which owns the franchise restaurant and nine other Applebee's in the San Francisco Bay area. The Mayorgas will be reimbursed for their medical bills, and Tei said the franchise group's restaurants will no longer serve apple juice and margaritas in similar containers. "We absolutely believe it was an honest mistake," Tei said. The serving appeared to have been accidental, Antioch police Lt. Pat Welch said. Mayorga said her son is now doing fine. She said the company has been very apologetic and offered free meals, but she added, "If they think I'm going back there, they're ridiculous." Carnage Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 They might have stumbled onto a great marketing idea. Sell alcohol in sippy cups. That way when we get drunk we don't spill our beer all over the place.
IceDragon Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 They might have stumbled onto a great marketing idea. Sell alcohol in sippy cups. That way when we get drunk we don't spill our beer all over the place. Lol... If only someone would 'accidentally' give me alcohol instead of another drink...
Homer Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 2 year olds have drunk more alcohol than me. Man, babies are beating me in both park count and alcohol consumption.
texashorns82492 Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 The kid's getting a taste of college life already.
Masked_Maverick Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 They might have stumbled onto a great marketing idea. hehehehe stumbled
Blazen_AZN Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 Wow, i'ts nice to see a story like this where the affected party isn't suing them out of thier ass.
trustkill22 Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 ^ Definitely was thinking the exact same thing.
GMAN962 Posted June 17, 2007 Author Posted June 17, 2007 Wow, i'ts nice to see a story like this where the affected party isn't suing them out of thier a$$. Well, that was probably because Applebee's agreed to pay the hospital bill. Otherwise, they'd probably be sueing them.
SLUSHIE Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 The kid's getting a taste of college life already. Or Junior High... either way. Whats the deal with the similar containers. You would think this would have happened already.
moinab Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 This doesn't smell right, to me. A 2 year old is not going to get drowsy and start vomiting from a sip of margarita. A 2 year old is also not going to voluntarily drink the rest of it, after taking that first sip and deciding he doesn't like it. The first line states that the child was making faces and pushing it away. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, on the restaurant's part, but the rest seems questionable.
GMAN962 Posted June 17, 2007 Author Posted June 17, 2007 ^Well, you have to realize that this is a 2 year old we're talking about. He's not heavy at all. How much alcohol affects you is based on your body weight. While yes, one sip isn't a lot for people at our age, it is a lot for someone of that age/weight. Another factor is that it's a margarita we're talking about. It's a very alcoholic drink! -Mike
moinab Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 ^^I'm a registered nurse, mother to 2 (with a 3rd on the way,) and I'm also well acquainted with margaritas. A sip of a margarita is not going to make a 2 year old drowsy and vomit. My point is that a toddler would have to drink many sips - more than any toddler I have encountered would be willing to do, without a big fight. Of course it's possible that the child did drink more, it just seems unlikely to me, especially since the article mentions that he was making a face and pushing the cup away.
moinab Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 I don't know - have you ever tried to drink out of a sippy cup? You can only sip out a little bit at a time - it would take quite a while to get a shot down!
shesaidboom Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Applebees served me a bug in my food twice, and gave me food poisoning. This really doesn't surprise me. Maybe the kid was vomitting and sick because of their food, not because of the drink.
Carnage Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 ^ I've had really inconsistent service at Applebees. Sometimes it's awesome, and sometimes it's terrible. We ate at an Applebees twice during our trip to Cedar Point in May. First day we had an awesome server, great service, great food. Very next day we had a really apathetic waitress who seemed to not care we were there, treated us like crap, and messed up all our orders. Though it was funny watching her sing happy birthday to me alone. Considering how apathetic she was it looked like she wanted to shoot herself while singing. Most awkward happy birthday singing ever.
Disney Dood Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 "Kids, let's treat ourselves to something real special tonight" Cut to; Applebee's. Shesaidboom, you went back after they could have given you triple E or West Nile Virus? Twice?
spaceace12 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 I read this and almost immediately thought of Taladega Nights.
shesaidboom Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Shesaidboom, you went back after they could have given you triple E or West Nile Virus? Twice? My boyfriend made me
crazyrider06 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 Lol too funny.. drinking at age 2 what has this world come to!! Al jokes aside that’s pretty bad, a margarita definitely doesn’t smell like apple juice. Are you telling me he didn’t smell it when he poured it!
FlyingScooter Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I bet if the mother had checked the drink before the kid drank it, she'd have told the waitress to being her kid a double.
edh Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I have to wonder if the drink actually contained alcohol, or just the mix. I wouldn't think a place would already have the drinks pre-made with alcohol already in them. I would think they would pour the mix, and then after pour the tequilla.
