Big water park to be built near Baltimore locals not welcome

Recommended Posts

A massive indoor water park is set to be constructed near Baltimore Washington International Airport (8 miles from Baltimore's inner harbor) but the residents of Baltimore and the surrounding area will not be welcome there. American Resort Management is expected to complete The Crosswinds Indoor Water park Resort in 2009 but the only way to gain admission to what they are claiming will be the "East Coast’s largest collection of water slides and attractions" will be to stay at one of the four attached luxury hotels.

From About.Com - "The Crosswinds Resort Indoor Water Park Admission Policy: The water park will be open to registered guests of the resort's four hotels. At this point, passes will not be made available to the general public."

Information about this project can be found at the following internet sites

http://themeparks.about.com/od/findindoorwaterparks1/p/GrandIsleWP.htm and http://www.thecrosswindsresort.com/

Thank you for any help you might wish to offer and please don't kill/flame me on this, I really enjoy water parks and was quite disappointed to learn of this company's planned policies. I sent this info to all my local newspapers and television news departments.

By the way HersheyPark's new Boardwalk area is fantastic and I will put up some images soon (although both times I have visited they had to close down the main play area due to someone going number two in the water...) Adam

Um, your claim is totaly misleading and completely wrong.

You and the residents of the area are more than welcome at the resort, you just have to stay at the hotel. This isn't any different than many other "resort guest only" indoor water parks built in the US.

It makes the park more exclusive and lines shorter.

I'm sorry, but we are all for this and you will NOT be getting any support from Theme Park Review.

Yeah, if I was a local resident, I'd be doing backflips about this place opening! This place would be a great alternative to jumping on a plane and heading down to Orlando when the weather turns miserable. The only thing it would need is a world class casino to make it the complete package deal for me.

I started reading this post and all the sudden all the words turned into...WAH WAH WAH WAH PITY WAH WAH BOOHOO PITY WAH WAH..... I mean come on, do you think residents of Sandusky can just drop by their waterpark resorts for a day or people near Kings Island can just drop in the Great Wolf for a few hours? These resorts are offering amenities to their GUESTS!! Not to the general public. Would you swing by your local Hampton Inn to take a dip in their pool on hot days? These places are self contained, exclusive places. Yes, they are pricey, but get tons of amenities for staying there. Suck it up and deal with it.

I live in Baltimore, and think that the hotel's policy is an excellent idea. No way should people who are not guests at the resort be permitted in this place. A place like this wants to market the exclusivity of the water park to their guests, and they're not going to be able to do that if the park is clogged full of locals. Plus it keeps it from becoming another local babysitting service, like Six Flags America.

I have no idea whether or not we would ever stay there (when we vacation, we like to leave the area), but it is a cool idea.

As long as the resort doesn't discriminate against paying guests regardless of race, creed, color, or ethnic origin, there's absolutely nothing wrong with their policy.

Locals will just have to pay and and stay there like any out-of-town guest, so there's no discrimination here. Plenty of folks in Williamsburg give weekends at the local Great Wolf Lodge, which has an indoor water park, to their families as Christmas presents.

They are building one of these in Reno, Nv. also. I for one cannot wait. I will gladly stay in the hotel and be able to go to an indoor waterpark, no problem. I think these are awesome ideas, as stated by several people above me. It's like a small getaway vacation of sorts.

You have to think of it as like a hotel pool, just because your local doesn't mean you can just go through the hotel and use their pool. You have to be a hotel guest, this goes the same with the waterpark.

Plans look great! We are huge waterpark fans & usually have to head down to Great Wolf in Williamsburg during winter for our fix. BWI is certainly a lot closer ~ will make a wonderful weekend getaway. I just signed up for email updates. Hoping for a good promo down the road!

And, yes, I too agree with the above posters that it SHOULD be restricted to paying hotel guests only. 'Nuff said.

I think what they should do is offer daily admission but in a very limited amount (maybe 50 - 100 maximum a day) when the hotels are not booked to capacity that way locals can enjoy the park and pay less than staying at the hotel but it won't have much of an impact on the hotel guests in the water park.

Well, what will probably happen (this is my guess, not based on any factual information), is that during off-peak periods the resort may offer area resident discounts for staying at the hotel. This isn't any different from what Disney and Universal offer Florida residents during the off season.

I apologize if my message title mislead any of you. I appreciate the input, I was not as familiar with the "water park resort scene" as many of you seem to be on this site. I just got off the phone with the company and they expect prices to start at about $250.00 per night. My dumb ass did not figure into this the fact that you could split this charge with up to three others for each room and also the company stated that a single nights stay grants all four guests admission to the waterpark for both your check in day (starting at 12PM) and the following day (all day.) They also informed me that they do wish to be "a good neighbor" and will be offering residents of local zip codes discounts and during slow periods big discounts. So anyway thanks to the couple of you who were not nasty to me in your responses, I appreciate the info and at least I clued you guys into a cool new attraction! They did say though that there are often delays in completing such projects so we might not get to experience The Crosswinds Resort until 2010, I'll be saving me sheckles...

I like the whole idea of guest only waterpark resorts. I've stayed at several Great Wolf Lodges and had a great time, mainly because there were no lines due to only guests being allowed in. I know some other places, like Kalahari Resorts has a limited number of GP that they let in each day, thus making for more lines. It's a nice perk to ONLY allow resort guests, it gives incentive to staying at on site, instead of a nearby Super 8 and then heading over to the waterpark and paying admission.

I love the whole craze with these indoor waterpark resorts, gives me some fun stuff to do in the winter.

Don thanks for the update! That's really great news! And as you can see, when you really think about it, you can have a nice weekend at a resort hotel including a great water park with a group of friends and when splitting the cost it's really a good value!

I'm psyched! Thanks for sharing this with us.

Holy crap, one of the local tv news station reporters just called me and wants to interview me tomorrow and do a story about the fact they are building this near Baltimore but are forcing locals to buy a nights stay at $250.00 plus in order to visit the park.

How is that news? I can see it now...

"Restaurant forces locals to buy a meal in order to sit at a table at the eatery".

"Company forces consumers to purchase a DVD in order to watch the movie on their TV."

"Apartment complex forces locals to rent an apartment to live there."

Yeah, not really news (but pretty much nothing these days is). Have the news interview the Poconos, Cincinnati, Wisconsin Dells, Williamsburg, Niagara Falls Ontario, Lake George, Kansas City, or any of the other places where Great Wolf Lodge or something similar has been built and see how many locals are protesting the fact that they've got to get a room for the weekend in order to go to the waterpark.

This is less news worthy than the sock-eating washers and dryers.

^Ren and Stimpy blew the lid off that story years ago--all left socks are transported through "the hideous vortex of the black hole" and deposited on a distant planet where our physical laws don't apply.

So, rest easy.

  • 4 years later...

I will also have to agree. I live 10 minutes from the location of the intended water park. I would have no problem at all staying at one of the hotels in order to have water park privilages. I already do this for my sons birthday every year. He was born in February, so every year for his birthday party, I rent rooms at a local hotel that has an indoor pool. The fact is, it doesn't matter where you are from, if you aren't a hotel guest, you won't have access to the water park. I don't see a problem with that.

Errrrr so do we know if this waterPark Was actually built in the end, Its just this post was 5 Years old until smireland replied again in here????

Looks like a cool looking waterpark, and fair play that its only for Hotel Guests, What a great perk for The guests staying there, If I ever went on Holiday to this place, I would love to go to this Hotel for this exclusive perk,It would just make it a more pleasureable experience.I'm sure that after a year or two of operation though, rules would be relaxed for locals in that they could visit in quiet periods/months and certaintly be charged a fee for visiting of course

I'm sure I remember that the Water Park at the Alton Towers Splash Landing Hotel was exclusive to Hotel Guests Only when first built, but after the first year, rules were relaxed slightly and they let Season Ticket Holders Visit, and now they actually let anyone visit the water park if they want.

^ It looks like this whole thing was a pipe dream from day one. The guy who was going to develope this filed bankruptcy back in 2009.

This is from the securities commissionor going after him back in 2009. SGO is the developer, SANJAY GHANSHYAM PATEL

10. The Asha Companies’ website failed to notify potential investors that there are numerous court judgments against SGP, including one for $1,821,097, and that he pled guilty in August 2004 to embezzlement by a bankruptcy trustee.

I know this is an old thread and story, but I might as well share a general opinion. Aren't staycations supposed to be cool now? Even if you have to book a room, you still might be saving compared to what you would've spent going further in search of recreation. Besides, even if you're close to home you're still getting a refreshing change of scenery from your own neighborhood. And yes, this is a fairly common concept.
