I went in May what you got to do is

1. See the White House

2. Visit Arlington Cemetary and see the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the unknown. ( They are real strict when watching it. If they see you chewing gum they will kick you out.)

3. Visit the monuments

4. Visit National Zoo

5. Visit Smithsonian ( I wanted to but I was on a school trip and it was not in the plans )

Off course if you go with your school you will probly not get a choice on where yoou go.

I don't get it. Outside of central florida DC is probably the cheapest place you can possibly visit.

Every museum and monument is free. A day pass on the metro is like 8 bucks. A sheet of $1 bills at the mint is less than $10. What did you guys spend all of your money on? LOL

Monica and I go there all of the time. Parking is cheap at metro stations, there are tons of parks in the area. We always enjoy it. Plus where else can you stand in an actual holocaust railcar (outside of nazi germany anyway )

Go to DC, it's awesome! Be sure to moon some government buildings while you're there!

I have only been once so far...January 2006. It was work related so pretty much all of my daylight hours were spent at the hotel, but I did get out at night and I have to say that fell in love with the city. There's a lot to do. Lots of little "details" to discover which is something that I love about visiting a new city. The Metro was probably the most user friendly public transit I have ever used.

The big stuff is free, but I could see how it could get expensive. The biggest costs would probably be hotel. I stayed at the Doubletree, really nice boutique style hotel. I'd definately like to go again in the spring or fall and check out the parts of the city I missed.

I've been twice. The first was a family trip in '04 and the latest was a school trip last year.

You'll love it. If you are indeed going with school, it's more than likely that you won't have freetime. Our schedule was packed to the limit. We basically saw about everything there is to see in DC in four days including a day at BGE.

Do you know what company this trip is planned through? If it's World Strides it will probably be the way I described.

Living next the DC nearly my entire life, it's lost any special meaning in my life. Field trips galore to the museums all through school, gets really boring and such. Though I do have some favorite things in DC:

Washington Monument, cool views from 500feet in the air through tiny windows though I haven't been in since the renovation and new gift shop...?

WWII Memorial is one of the nicest monuments in that little area (if you need something that is visually interesting and not a deeper meaning like the Vietnam memorial).

Air & Space Museum Certainly the most interesting of them all. Has IMAX

Natural History Personal favorite also has IMAX

American Indian Museum don't know much about it, brand new and haven't been inside yet.

Holocaust (if you're interested)

And the Museum of American History is getting major work done and has been shutdown, not sure for how long... Also the Modern Art is always interesting. Have fun.

Being that I live in DC (Well, 15 minutes away). I'm going to say, its a great town, when it's light out.

Most defiantly stay in groups at all times. Especially if you leave the hotel at night. It's very easy to get mugged. The Monuments at night are sometimes even better than in the day. If you can, hit up DuPont circle for some of the BEST food around. La Tomate is a great little Italian restaurant in DuPont. If you plan on going to the top of the Washington Monument make sure you have some sort of major ID and get their early as they only give out a limited number of tickets each day. They usually sell out fast.

All the monuments can be done in a day and the Smithsonian museums can be done in a day. I found nothing special in them except for the Holocaust museum (which isn't even run by Smithsonian, its run by the park services I believe). It's an extremely depressing and graphic museum but its REALLY interesting.

Erhh, I'm not sure what else. Try to get your teacher to talk to your state representative person thingy (I'm not sure of their correct political name) to get a tour in the Capital Building or White House. They're both VERY interesting.

Hmm, if you want to spend loads of money, go to Union Station. GREAT shopping, and if y'all are up for a 20 minute bus ride go to Tyson's Corner. Some of the BEST shopping that isn't crammed into a mall.

Thats really it in a nut shell.

My favorite thing to do in DC is take pictures, and EAT EAT EAT! They have a great selection of food. My favorite monument is the Korean and Vietnam memorial.

There ya go

Oh and...

American Indian Museum don't know much about it, brand new and haven't been inside yet.

It was HORRIBLE. Sorry All it was was Totem Poles and fancy shmancy sculptures. It was really a let down.

Blar! Well at least the architecture on the outside of the building is kickass to look at

Oh, and the food at the museum is crap (or at least it was 4 years ago when I last had it) not to mention overpriced. Stay away...

I second this motion, half of the American Indian museum is a giftshop...check out the other Smithsonians, the National Gallery and the monuments (especially at night).

Most of all, have fun! D.C. is a great city, I just wish my dad was still working there so I could visit it more often.

I loved my trip to Washington D.C. Of course I was only around 8 or so, so I'm sure if I was to go back I'd find it a lot more exciting. But nevertheless it was a great one day trip. When I do make my way back to the east coast I think its one of the places I would like to go back and revisit.

  • 1 month later...

I just got back from Washington D.C. on Friday. I had a blast. I went to many of the places that everyone mentioned and suggested. Some of the places that I went were the Capital Building, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian Museum of National History, and many other places. But we hardly got to shop for suveniers because our schedule was so packed.
