So I recently returned from a four night vacation in Disney World, which was awesome! I went to Animal Kingdom very excited to ride Expedition Everest. I rode it and I do not think it was working properly. The projected video of the Yeti (tearing up the track) was not shown and the actual Yeti itself had no lights shined on it and was nearly unable to see. I rode it again just to make sure it wasn't just my ride but it happened again. Is this normal?

It seems odd that they would take both of those effects down at the same time on purpose. Especially during the peak holiday season. My guess is a temporary problem.

Any of our Disney regulars know what's going on?

Was there at least a strobe light on the real yeti?

I had heard that when the Yeti goes down, they shine a strobe lite on the inanimate creature, like what they do with Harold on the Matterhorn, to compensate.

There was, but it wasn't enough to see the Yeti clearly.

That is the point. This means that the Yeti (the animatronic version) was operating in B mode.

When the Yeti is functioning in A mode, it moves in full. When in B mode, strobes go off and a fan blows his fur so it looks like he is moving, when in fact, he is not.

The ride was designed with this procedure in mind, especially because this animatronic does need time to cool off from its stress of nearly clobbering guests with its hydraulic arm. B mode also allows the Yeti this cooling time.

^My guess is that the projector broke. It's why sometimes on Spiderman at IOA the Spider Signal is upside-down or the Hydro-Man water effect doesn't work. Something broke!

^^^^Did you learn that from Al Lutz...err, I mean your imagineering friend?

I don't think there is a ride in the entire history of amusement parks that can say it has been open all the time and/or had all of its effects working. That's just what happens when you cycle things every 30 seconds for 10+ hours a day.

Wow, I think I've been in B mode my entire life then!

We rode this past Friday, we being Ashley and I, the projection was going but Yeti was in B mode, or as we came to call it, "Disco Yeti". We actually liked B mode a little better. Though the Yeti is awesome, the B mode made him seem like he just suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Now, if only it could have the motion and the strobes all together. I found something even more disturbing than that however. Yeti ball seems to be an endangered species! They were all out!

I knew you were going to be at AK that day, so I called down there and told them to turn off the effects just to piss you off.

It appears like I've been a contribution to society, when in fact it's just some strobe lights making it look like I am.

Well, I'm on vacation in Orlando/Tampa now and was at Animal Kingdom on the 20th for the Disney Magic Hours.... in which during that there was a problem and overheard the lady talking to her manager on the phone telling him/her that the yeti was not functioning properly. The yeti shadow was working perfectly, and the strobes on the yeti were working, but no movement of it what-so-ever.

Not like it matters much, but it worked a-okay today, all 5 times I rode it. it's creepy how lifelike he looks and moves. That, and it was so much easier to see him when it was dark outside for some reason. Off topic, whoever made the decision to have a single rider line is my new hero. 3 rides in a hour and a half when the normal wait time is 140 minutes is amazing.
