Valleyfair (VF) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I don't know why it's so hard for everyone to believe that a B&M is possible at VF. I mean Leviathon... NO. Gatekeeper....NO. Banshee....NO. Patriot... Yup! Talon... Yup! Hydra... Yup! Hydra was FOR VF. How soon we forget that but it was destined for the very spot Renegade is in today! Matt Ouimet stated that every park was evaluated and the needs of each park will be addressed one by one. He knows each parks shortfalls. I'd imagine VF's shortfalls were/are a Family area (check), water park (two attractions bordering the waterpark have been removed this off season. HINT, HINT.), and lack of a big time thrill coaster.

Agreed. I know that Valleyfair isn't the kind of park that will receive a Banshee or a Gatekeeper, but I don't think that they would stoop down to the level of a Vekoma SLC, like some people think.

On the topic of an SLC, some people say that it would satisfy the GP because they like coasters with lots of "loop-de-loops", but I think they are sensitive to roughness too because, for example, if a park posts a picture of it's SLC on it's Facebook page, there are many comments along the lines of "This ride hurts your head" or "I hate this ride", so I don't think the GP would end up liking an SLC in the long run.

As for a B&M wing coaster, while it's not exactly what I want, I would not complain if we got one because begging Valleyfair for a B&M and then complaining when we get one is almost hypocritical. Besides, I think that enthusiasts' expectations for wing coasters are high enough that they're setting themselves up for disappointment. If you're expecting a "body-glued-to-the-seat" type of experience, then I guarantee you'll be disappointed. I kept my expectations low for X-Flight, but I ended up having a really fun ride. That's similar to how I felt when I moved to Minnesota a few years ago. I hadn't heard many good things about Valleyfair, but when I visited for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised.

Too bad you have to lower your expectations to make a ride fun. Sounds like your trying a little to hard to enjoy it but to each his own on why or how you enjoy a ride. Everyone is different. I just prefer thrilling rides. X-Flight is fun and I like it better than Gatekeeper by just a little bit but neither are thrilling. Fun yes, thrilling no. I am not begging VF for anything and I can complain if I feel like it, CF is just a business and I am one of their millions of customers. As a customer I am just stating what I think the park needs after visiting other parks in the CF chain, a thrilling ride with some intensity because the park has never had one and preferably one with inverts because the park has not had a new one with inverts since 1980.

I've never seen that. I have seen

"Great ride"

"Fun"

"wanna ride"

"Looks great"

"Smooth, fun ride"

Of course, there is always that one person who thinks even the smoothest rides are rough

And the roughest rides are the smoothest.

This is my first time on this discussion thread. I wanted to chime in and say I think VF is doing all the right things right now. Of course I want a new coaster like everyone else and we will get one soon. Personally I think that after we get a huge water park expansion next year we will receive a new coaster in 2016 and possibly 2018 or 19. We are also due for a major new flat ride such as a giant Frisbee.

I don't think you want a gatekeeper

Unless you want a dull boring ride

Agreed. A B&M coaster has just as much possibility as any other manufacturer for VF's next coaster. CF has a good working relationship with them and VF is one of the only two parks in the chain that do not have a B&M ride. Wild Thing cost 11 million back in 1996. In today dollars that would be upwards of 16 million and CF in 2013 has indicated VF is one of their top 3 potential growth parks for the near future. Would that get a Gatekeeper or Banshee? Nope. But it could get them a Raptor clone or something between a Batman invert and a Raptor design. I just hope IF they do decide to go with B&M as a manufacturer for VF's next coaster it would be a Invert or Floorless instead of their Winged or Flyer models because this park is overdue for a thrilling ride that provides some forces.

Okay, maybe not many, but there is still a decent amount of GPs that know whether or not a ride is smooth or rough.

And, on top of that, are SLCs that cheap?

I totally agree. VF has been neglected for a bit but the last 3 years have seen some great additions and improvements. A new kiddy area was the #1 need and Camp Snoopy filled that need. They had rides their since the 70's when I was a kid and it needed a refresh and it received a pretty sweet one. That part of the park looks great now and is a joy to walk through now. That part of the parks is so much busier than it used to be also now. The surprise Route 76 area looks to be another great addition. Old refurbished classic flats, the comeback of the AA's and the new Northern Lights ride. Hopefully they can redo the Monster next year like CP did this year and move that over there too. Next thing that needs to be addressed is the weak water park, every other park in the chain has a better one. With IMAX being demolished and the other moves in the park it looks like this will be the next addition after Route 76. It is needed and will be welcomed. Once they address that need the only thing left will be a new coaster and hopefully it will be a thrilling one. After that they will need another new flat or two, since Chaos left nothing has been added. The area next to Route 76 where the defunct amphitheater sits looks like a nice place to place a new flat or two. A family coaster would not hurt either.

I think that a flying coaster at Valleyfair might be fun, but only if it has a pretzel loop because the positive G's in pretzel loops are absolutely insane. Otherwise, it would just be a boring, low-force ride that Valleyfair doesn't need. Although, I don't think a flying coaster is going to happen because Cedar Fair has yet to build a B&M flyer, and it's been a while since the last B&M flyer was built.

We all believe the park will be going with a new Water Park expansion. It's logical based on some of the recent additions / removals. The water park is also extremely popular, so any addition will be welcomed by a vast majority of guests.

garyman6 - GateKeeper is a nice coaster. It's beautiful, forceful at times (bottom of first drop), is quite different than everything else at Cedar Point (or Valleyfair), and like most B&M's, it is a people eater. Honestly, I'd be happy with either an invert or winged coaster. By all accounts, Banshee sounds like a fantastic addition to Kings Island. Like everyone else, I too believe a B&M will be the next addition.

So, last October I was talking with Valleyfair's GM Dave Frazier. he asked me if HydroBlaster should be part of the main park or the water park. I told him the waterpark. There was no option for just removing it outright. I believe that 2015 will see a great new water park addition as well as the return of HydroBlaster in its new home! What do you think?

Come to think of it, that may not be a bad idea. If they haven't completely sent Hydroblaster to the junkyard yet, I think that moving it to Soak City might do it some good. I've always felt that Hydroblaster was a bit out of place being in the main park, so moving it into the waterpark would make much more sense. As for where it could go, I think it could be placed in the old IMAX spot, assuming that the volleyball courts are just a one-year thing. Otherwise, I don't know where it would go.

I'm not a huge fan of flying coasters, I do agree the g forces in the pretzel loop are insane but thats really the only thing that it has going for it, I could see a vekoma SLC or a boomerang coaster coming in the near future, maybe a cheap b&m invert

With all this I've been trying to find something that bridges both ideas. This is a long shot but I was thinking along the lines of another puesdo interactive water coaster or coaster with a water element. Something with RollerSoaker at Hershey or maybe a B&M with a watersplash element. Because the footprint would be so small, I was looking at the park map and was thinking maybe something might fit if there was something that started by Excalibur, moved down along the left side of the water park and had a turnaround down by the umbrellas by the wavepool- 3 and4 on the park map. Somewhere in there maybe having a brief water splash element to bridge the gap of coaster and waterpark and slowly having it move back up by excalibur. Granted the out and back design would have to be close to each other when the train heads back to the station- almost like gatekeeper were the two halfs of the ride are almost on top of each other, but I think it could be a pretty decent idea. A longshot I know. Also they'd need to make a small lagoon for the watersplash anyways. Then a way to get people over there.

Maybe have the element a dive loop and put the splash at the bottom or a batwing/pretzel loop with something at the bottom. Thats probably tough to do with a pretzel with things reducing speed, but I'm just spitballing. Also I don't think I've ever seen a BM floorless looper with a watersplash.

This is my 'pre finals' thinking. Pardon me if that sounds a bit out there or impossible, but who know what could happen.

You seriously would want an SLC or a Boomerang over a flying coaster? I'd rather ride a relatively low-force B&M flyer than get my head banged up on a Vekoma. I don't think that Valleyfair will get anything from Vekoma because with the exception of Boomerang at Worlds of Fun, all Cedar Fair Vekomas we're acquired in park buyouts, and I believe that Cedar Fair is aware that Vekoma coasters are not the best. Although, I don't think a B&M flyer is likely either for reasons I listed earlier.

If/when VF gets a new coaster Excalibur will be demolished and the new ride will go in it's place. VF doesn't need more coasters, it just needs the quality of the coasters upgraded with new ones. I don't think VF has the foot traffic to justify a new coaster without taking out the operating expense of another one that is under performing like Excalibur. Excalibur is just a dog that will not hunt anymore. The ride does not open until noon on week days, usually only runs one train, is the only coaster in the park to be closed during Haunt and also the only coaster in the park that is NOT on the Fast Pass system because it is always a walk on anyway and just is not that popular of a ride at all. VF has flat rides on the FP system when Excalibur is not.
