What will be the FIRST coaster you ride in 2013?
singemfrc replied to Wes's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Were you on the first train of the day? Thats the exact same time I was there riding...I did 5 runs right when they opened it then came back and got 5 more when it was getting dark. And yeah it was COLD...felt really good each time the train went back inside the casino where it was toasty warm. I actually didn't think it was too rough..the new trains (with different restraints) make a big difference. It's not a smooth ride by anyone's definition, but it's definitely not in the "trying to kill you" category anymore like Kong is most of the time. -

Mine was a mini marathon on Manhattan Express (aka "The Roller Coaster) at NYNY in Vegas. (If you're wondering why on earth I would ride that Togo coaster that many times in a row, I was lucky enough to end up in Vegas when Adventuredome was closed for maintenance so I made up the time on the ME...plus since it's a pay-to-ride, I got my moneys worth and rode several rows on three different trains) -
^ I've definitely noticed that. I usually find the most professional employees running X2 and Goliath and the ones that don't seem to care about anyone or anything are usually working at Riddler's and Scream. In my experience the Tatsu ops have been friendly and seemed to be mostly efficient, it just always bugs me that they don't use the other station, which is almost certainly not the ride ops' decision.

I just want to say thank you and that I think the site and it's users are better off for it, too. -

Im actually headed to Vegas in a couple weeks, so either "The Roller Coaster" at NYNY, or Canyon Blaster at AdventureDome. Love me some Arrow Looper, even if it's short! -
How well do you handle hangtime?
singemfrc replied to Vid_w's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
S:UF is really of what I've seen the ultimate in hang time in my opinion when you're in that slow roll and you're just (seemingly) literally hanging by your kees upside down, it's great. Medusa actually is the only one that always seems to make me uneasy on my first ride of the day because the OTSR's have more play than anything else I've ridden, there seems to be a good several inches of play so when the forces change it can at first make you feel like your restraint is unlocked until it hits and reminds you its still locked. Ive had that on every ride in every row on both trains, I wonder if they've always been like that, or if it's just the position theyre in when I'm in the seat and people of different sizes don't experience that. -
Just happened to have this handy from my last visit. This is of course looking out from the loading platform. Straight out and up.

They say it now and it's not true, so I don't expect it to stop regardless. SFMM, SFDK, and SCBB all have airtime if you know where to find it. Granted none have the sheer amount that is found in east coast parks, but a lot of people act like its completely non existent which isnt true. I actually got significant ejector airtime in row 5 of Superman: Ultimate Flight the other night much to my surprise and pleasure. I'll have to ride that row again and see if it happens every time or it was just something about the way I was sitting or the conditions that night.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has done an outstanding job operating Superman: Ultimate Flight. What looked like a ride that was going to be a capacity nightmare has been in reality the fastest moving line in the park. Every time I visit I'm impressed at how well the ops are moving people through that ride, opening the air gates before the current riders are off allowing the new riders to get in the car right as the previous riders leave really saves significant time, I wish they'd do the same on the other rides in the park rather than waiting for the whole platform to be clear to open the gates. (Granted the style of restraints are also a big help, it cuts the check time roughly in half not having seat belts or OTSRs). They also practice the same rules as you mentioned on Farenheit..mandatory assigned seating and intelligent placement of singles and odds. They've actually stopped calling for single riders like they used to because they've gotten better at putting them together to eliminate empty seats. X2 at SFMM is another one that has been consistently efficient in my experience. Though the line can get very long in the mid morning to late afternoon on busy days, its a testament to the solid operations that it usually clears up later on. Some people complain about slow operations on this ride, but the trains are not the type that would otherwise be conducive to fast operations, they do a good job with what they have to work with.

Yeah I took some photos of the Holiday stuff..initially I wasn't going to post them because I was in a hurry and night time cell phone pictures don't turn out well. Xmas lights on the park sign After I got my very own train, still only a few people on V2 during ERT Kinda cool to see the penguins out of their usual "pens", after I took the photo they were just letting them run around on the lawn. The fire pits were very popular later when it got cold. This is where the quality gets bad... Medusa HIP theming Waiting in line for SS just before it saw me in line and chomped the cyanide pill

Yeah even as I was at SFDK yesterday I peeked at the SFMM lines and I'm glad I was at the park I was at yesterday! Riddler's is always like that, never has more than one train regardless of conditions..even if theres 5 min waits everywhere else in the park it will be 20 for riddlers not only because of the 1 train but also because of the bafflingly lackadaisical loading operations.

HIP TR: Awesome day at the park today, probably my best overall day so far. The ERT was fantastic, I got row 1 on the first train on SUF (Could have had my own train but told the ops they could wait for some more people) and got another immediate ride in row 6. Walked over to V2 where they hadn't launched any trains yet because no one was going over there (they were all still running to SUF) and I did in fact get my very own V2 train Rode that one front row and back row and then wandered over to Roar. Roar was only running 1 train all day today which meant 20 minute lines during ERT and 45-60 min que after about 3:00 (In fact I didn't even see the other train, in rehab possibly), so I only took one ride in the back row. Shocker of the day though - Roar was running awesome! By far the best experience I've had on Roar, plenty of airtime and not too rough, it was haulin'. I would have a much higher overall opinion of that ride if it ran like that all the time. Wish I would have had time to ride it again today. At 2pm when the rest of the park opened I headed over to the other side of the park to give Medusa some love and it also seemed to be running faster and smoother than normal. At this point I left the park right when it started to get busy as I wanted to get some night rides in but didn't want to stay all day, so I hopped over the freeway and caught Flight at Century (good flick). When I got back I headed for Kong, which was also running only one train (though merited, it still was only a one or two train wait..there was no need for a second one) and luckily it was the orange train. Sat in the far seat back row and got probably my smoothest ride yet. Coming down the exit ramp I heard someone who was on my train say "Wow that was amazing that was so much smoother than when we rode it earlier today I can't believe it's the same ride" and they were only running that one train all day, so who knows. I guess Kong is just a crap shoot, but it sure is fun when it's not trying to kill you. I got a night ride in on Medusa, the only coaster with any decent HIP theming (candy canes lit up on the side of the lift and green/red lights on the inside of the lift) sat in the back row and actually got a little bit of airtime! I absolutely love the back row of Medusa I tried to give sky screamer a whirl but once again it was not to be, I got in line and it promptly broke itself..that ride just doesn't like me. Last rides of the night on V2 and then one last spin on SUF...sat in row 5 on SUF and actually got some sustained airtime on the first drop after the roll! I was fully out of my seat for a good second or two...first time that's happened, pleasant surprise! (Maybe because the bar wasn't as tight as usual so I didn't notice before..maybe its a row 5 thing, dont think I've sat there before) Got in 11 rides overall in the 4 hours I was there, definitely not bad. Also thanks SFDK for the free cookie and hot chocolate! Incidentally..I noticed someone was actually using a flash pass during ERT which I thought was funny, but I noticed that they are currently selling FP's at half off throughout Holiday In The Park.

Legendary coasters (respecting the elders)
singemfrc replied to S. Moses's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Coasters that stand the test of time and outlast the fads are legendary, and Giant Dipper at SCBB is definitely legendary to me. It was built in 1924 and is still the best woodie on the west coast. 88 years later it's still amazing. -
Best And Worst Coaster In California

Have you never been to Santa Cruz? -
This is what drives me crazy. It's like the post office, they don't seem to care. If I were an op on Riddler's or Revolution or anything else with a long line due to 1 train, I would be busting my a$% to get people in and out as fast as possible..instead you see chatting and feet shuffling and a general lack of concern that just makes it worse. I think I mentioned this before..there's a clear difference in the quality of rideop depending on the Ride. The above mentioned rides seem to get the lackadaisical op, whereas the employees operating Goliath and X2 (And Tatsu, though it's infamous for using one station, the ops were still doing a great job when I was there) were really on top of their game. Maybe there needs to be some peer mentoring/training or maybe it's just a lack of incentives for some of them. One of the best examples of how it should be done is Superman: Ultimate Flight up at SFDK. Everything about that ride screams capacity nightmare, but the staff do such a great job there on a daily basis that even on busy days (save for Key Club like days) you rarely see a line over 30 minutes. It's clear that the park knows the potential for a capacity problem and they focus on it so that it doesn't become one.

^ This offseason, ideally, like right now. It's definitely obvious and due to the fact that it's a prominent and very visible coaster, I think they should make a priority of it. I visited the park last month for the first time in a few years, and the faded paint on Tatsu was definitely something that jumped out at me right away.
