  1. With today's technology, incredibly easy. All you'd have to do is just play around with the pulleys so that you get a 90 degree turn instead of a 45 degree one or so, and increase the wattage of the motor by a good deal and you would be okay. Personally, however, my preferences would be with train mounted LSM's. It may or may not require more power but at least it's more simple from a mechanical standpoint. EDIT: This can also be done with a normal chain lift motor, except the motor would have to be a lot more powerful because of all that extra metal being the chain.
  2. ^^The reason why it appears to be that you think that they have given up on thrill seekers is because they haven't addressed them in any of the recent additions, but the reason that seems most obvious to me is not that they are forgetting thrill seekers, but that they are trying to even out the package. Sure, we have not gotten a *real* thrill ride in 13 years, but at least we have a good collection of thrill rides. We had nothing in the way of a family coaster; there needed to be a stepping stone between Brain Teaser/Hoot N Holler and Predator, and Motocoaster filled that need. That was aimed more at the medium range group. Though the new additions are still family rides, they appear to be emphasizing that kids are the main target audience. Although the park still has those older kiddie/family rides, they aren't really marketable due to the fact that they are old. To get the families to come to the park in the first place, they need to build a few family rides and advertise those so that the families will know that at least something is there for them and then they will discover the other family rides as they roam throughout the park. Darien Lake has been established as a thrill park, so the park needs to round out its package and repair its reputation before we get in enough people to bring in enough cash to build something big again. I have confidence that another coaster will come to the park eventually. Since they fixed the immediate need of kiddie and family rides, they now have to satisfy the "lesser" need of thrill rides, but they need something that can be put up relatively quickly to prop up the park in the short term, so the guests can be held over for when that new coaster would come around, which takes time to build. Since it typically takes about two years to build a coaster from start to finish, my guess is that 2013 will be Pitt Fall's reopening over here. That will bring a fair amount of thrill seekers back into the park to hold over everyone. 2013 could be spent on fixing up the park in terms of lights, paths, etc. and the 2013 off season and 2014 "on season" will be spent conjuring up proposals for the next coaster, and we could be seeing groundbreaking by nearing the end of the 2014 season. I know, more waiting. Yes, we have waited a long time for a new coaster, but it looks like we finally got a reputable company that can actually take care of the park. I believe we may finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, even if the light is fairly small at this point, it is light nonetheless.
  3. ^^^An interesting possibility, and it probably would solve the vertical clearance issue without having to make the drop tower feel cluttered against the Chicken Ranch Cafe's southern wall, and would actually provide a little more queue room for Pitt Fall, as well as meaning that those trees between Raging Seas and Corn Popper wouldn't have to be removed.
  4. ^^I'll just repost what I said a week ago: There is 102 feet of clearance between Skycoaster's center line of travel and the Giant Wheel. If Pitt Fall were placed directly the center of Raging Seas's current spot, the center of Pitt Fall would have to be about 20 feet northward of Raging Seas' center if the same amount of clearance is needed. There's enough room between Chicken Ranch Cafe and Raging Seas to allow that, as Pitt Fall's actual diameter (minus the queue line) is only 30 feet, so it can go right next to Chicken Ranch Cafe, the queue line could be simply directly in front of the ride instead of making a ring around it like it did at Kennywood and we would be all set. Note that Raging Seas has a total diameter of 60 feet, whilst without the queue, Pitt Fall has a diameter of only 30 feet. But you aren't taking into account the fact that at that point, the skycoaster's vehicle is much higher than Raging Seas, whereas it would definitely not be higher than Pitt Fall, which is why I theorize that Pitt Fall would have to be moved to where I previously stated because of the remote possibility that the people in the skycoaster could sway to the right a fair amount after a really nasty and unlucky gust of wind. With Raging Seas being so low to the ground, clearance isn't an issue, but with something the height of Pitt Fall, this could be an issue as those people could collide with Pitt Fall's tower, or with even unluckier timing, collide with the vehicle as the ride is going up or down, injuring 7 or 8 people, which would also mean that the cable could get snagged up in the machinery of the car going up which would mean significant damage to both the car and the skycoaster.
  5. ^It's a good idea, but there are problems with that: 1: The Illusion Coaster is not for sale on Vekoma's website. 2: If the Illusion Coaster is a specific layout model, then there's no way it will fit in the Galaxy Theater, though a custom one would easily fit. 3: If they decided to go with Vekoma for a family coaster inside the theater, it would probably be better to go with a custom layout and themed roller skater as the track dimensions would be smaller so it would be a bit easier to fit in the theater. And for my non-strictly-engineering opinion, (though it is probably on the minds of the management of the park and of HFE as well,) they recently got a good family ride (Motocoaster) new water rides (the water park expansion) and new kiddie rides (the new expansion this year.) DL hasn't gotten an adult flat since Top Spin in 2000 or 2001, whenever it came. We need something from the thrill department. People have noticed; it's one of the bigger reasons why the park's attendance dropped by half from 1999 to 2006. Pitt Fall would be a great addition that could be planned out and constructed pretty quickly to give the thrill seekers something new to look forward to in the near future as the rest of the park is cleaned up, and if/when HFE decides to stick with Darien Lake for the long run, that will give them time to plan out a nice big major coaster. We haven't gotten a marquee attraction since the freaking Y2K scare. It's time for another one.
  6. It took me a while to figure out why the brake run is so ridiculously long, but I eventually did figure it out: They wanted three train operation, but for some reason they didn't want to have an MCBR (possibly due to variety as Behemoth already does, otherwise, after studying the ride's property on videos an MCBR could have been placed right after the overbank at the far end, but it would have required quicker transitions that B&M generally doesn't seem to prefer to build) and had no other choice as there would otherwise be too few block sections to safely allow three train operations.
  7. ^That and all the additional theming that would have to be put in as well as the electrical and computer systems. It would be more difficult than one would guess, so it would likely have to go through a similar method of construction like RotM and have a section of wall ripped open during construction and then have it patched back up afterwards, as well as exterior overhauling, seeing as whatever theme they come up with may be difficult to remain cohesive with the current facade. But if they went the route of dark ride, seeing as there's so much vertical space available, they could possibly put a multi story ride in there; something interesting to consider, regardless of whether or not HFE will do something like that.
  8. ^Go to customink.com and they will make individual shirts that you customized yourself and will ship them to you for about $25 or so. It's awesome. I used it for my best friend last year and made him a funny Halo (video game) shirt. No, I'm not affiliated with them. Just sayin'. Still totally wish that I could have gone, but my allergies would probably go haywire.
  9. ^^^^There is 102 feet of clearance between Skycoaster's center line of travel and the Giant Wheel. 10. ^The Clown Fish, Lion Fish, and turtle were my personal favorites. Very nicely done. I'm saving those to my good pictures folder.
  11. Very possibly, at least in my opinion and based upon my inferences. DL really does need a good size drop tower as a modernized adult flat ride, and although they are tall, they shouldn't take too long to construct seeing as they are just a single tower.
  12. ^^Add in the possibility of Pitt Fall. http://triblive.com/x/dailynewsmckeesport/s_756913.html#axzz267wAYlv5 It says here that it isn't going to a park in the Palace Entertainment chain, but I very specifically remember seeing somewhere (can't find it; tried looking) that it was sold to a park in New York State, however it was quite quickly redacted. The only park that needs and can afford a drop tower of this size is Darien Lake. And better yet, I did measurements on Google Earth. Raging Seas's land plot size without the queue is a 60 foot diameter ride. Pitt Fall with the queue has a diameter of 63 feet. So make a slightly smaller queue and reroute it a bit to utilize Raging Seas' current queue and you have a perfect fit. Obviously, without finding that article (which it was probably edited) I cannot give one hundred percent validity to this, but it has been firmly implanted in my memory.
  13. I305. Nuts airtime. Nuts G's. Nuts transitions.
  14. ^Care to draw that coaster? I can't do .3DS, but I need something to do, so I feel like making it in Newton.
  15. I just had one a night or two ago that I was at Yokohama Cosmoworld, taking a look at their new hyper coaster and B&M wing rider. There were also some parts where I was at another Japanese amusement park which only existed in my dream, where I was in the back seat of a one car train, the front of the train crumpled and fell under the track, killing the two people in front of me, while I was fine.
  16. TTD's launch, between the viewing seats and the ride's entrance. The "power down" sound (like the Death Star) followed by the wicked loud, airplane-like rush of the train going by... *drools.*
  17. ^I never did it. When Amber said that I "wasn't invited" I made the mistake of taking her seriously. That and it was another $30 that I didn't really want to spend. For those who have said too much saturation: In hindsight, I do see that some of them were too much and the people did appear discolored. But for the rest, I want more of a pretty picture than a realistic one. I generally try to crank up the saturation right to the point before detail gets lost or coloration becomes unnatural. I believe I am pretty good at looking for the former, but the latter still needs some practice.
  18. 1: Roller Coaster - Hoffman's Playland. (Rode this when I was three, apparently. I don't remember it, but that's what my mom says.) 100: the Bat - Canada's Wonderland. (This was unintentionally my 100th coaster, though I still had a lot of fun.) 200: Wacky Worm, Lake Winnie. (This, however, was intentional.)
  19. In four days, I'm going back to college a week early for band camp (I'm actually looking forward to that though.) But starting August 27th, I have vector calculus, statics, thermodynamics, electromagnetic physics, and marching band again. I'm also going to try to look for a job on campus... This is going to be a lot of work cut out for me.
  20. I considered doing a photo TR, but that would prove to be far too much work for me, I'll just let the other members do that. Instead, I decided to post my favorite photos I took. The famous photo spot of Loch Ness Monster, Griffon, and Alpengeist at BGW. It may be one of the most photographed coaster spots in the world, but it is for a reason. Griffon's first drop. Loch Ness Monster's interlocking loops from that pedestrian bridge that goes right under it. Intimidator at Carowinds from the observation tower. Nighthawk at Carowinds, with Carolina Cobra poking through a little bit. Windseeker at Carowinds. These rides may be kinda boring, but oh my god, their lighting package is some of the most beautiful I have ever seen; right up there with the absolute best traveling the German fair circuit. Coney Island Cyclone. It's kind of like the "Troll 2" or "He Man" of roller coasters; it's so bad, it's actually good. The famous Coney Island Cyclone sign. I don't know why it's still sideways. I am positive I rotated it. Coney Island Cyclone again, but this time with the park's residential frisbee-type ride. A large portion of the Coney Island midway from the Wonder Wheel, intentionally focusing on the metal "wall" and blurring the park in the background. Barnstormer at Dollywood, taken from the queue of Mountain Slidewinder. The famous (eventually iconic most likely) eagle sculpture in front of Wild Eagle at Dollywood. Wild Eagle at Dollywood, taken from the queue line of Mountain Slidewinder. Fahrenheit's Norwegian Loop at Hersheypark. I don't know why this one is still sideways after editing either. Again, Fahrenheit at Hersheypark. Great Bear, Hersheypark. Great Bear, Skyrush, Sooperdooperlooper, and Comet at Hersheypark, taken from Sooperdooperlooper's station. Anaconda at Kings Dominion. Dominator at Kings Dominion. Again, I don't know why these photos are still sideways. Dominator at Kings Dominion again, taken from the entrance to the picnic pavilion area. Ghoster Coaster at Kings Dominion. Don't believe me? Look at the signage on the front car. Just some guy at Kings Dominion selling glowy and light up stuff. I asked him to just get a couple swords and wave them around for a few seconds, and this was the result. I305's drop at Kings Dominion, taken during the backstage tour. Just save these sideways photos and rotate them yourselves. I already did it on my computer, and the files themselves are fine, but imgur rotates them back for some annoying reason. I305 during the photo tour. I noticed the reflection in this guy's glasses, I thought it was cool, and I asked him to pose. I305 again. Rebel Yell and I305, taken from the ferris wheel. Shockwave at Kings Dominion. I tell you, if you ride a not-wheel-seat, it is a fun and smooth ride, except for the lead in to the helix. No one believed me... Oh well. Less lines for me. Kings Dominion's Windseeker. The lighting program on these things are wicked long, probably nearing ten minutes, so you can get a huge array of different shots from just one ride. Downdraft at Knoebels. This was the first day that I finally figured out how to take good night shots with my camera. This, was Phoenix during Glow Phest. It was pitch black, so I couldn't see the lift at all, and I was less than a hundred feet away from it too. I had to guess where the train was going to be and I took the picture there, I also anticipated it's movement so it would be more centered, so that's why it's a little blurry. But the colors... omg the colors. Power Surge at Knoebels. Sky Ride at Knoebels. Twister at Knoebels. Yes, it is an onride photo. They do not have any policy against onride photos, so bring your cameras on, people! The Whip at Knoebels. I decided to add some Sepia effect to it because it's such a nostalgic ride. Cannon Ball at Lake Winnie, taken from the drop tower. Lake Winnie was the other park that didn't have any onride photo policies, so I took advantage of that. Some buildings in China Town in NYC, taken during Scott's Pizza Tour. A sideways picture is still better than no picture. I can't wait until the new World Trade Center is finished, I'll definitely take pictures of those when I come back. The Smoky Mountains, taken on the gondola ride up to Ober Gatlinburg. BTR at SFGADV, taken during the backstage tour. Nitro at SFGADV, also taken during the backstage tour of the day. Nitro again. Nitro and BTR at sunset. SUF at SFGADV. BTR at SFOG. Dare Devil Dive at SFOG. GASM at SFOG. And last but not least, Goliath at SFOG.
  21. Just saw 4 Point 0 about a week ago. They're a local ska band (like, REALLY local; I marched with half of them in my rookie year of marching band in high school) and they kick serious butt. They just came back from a tour going down to Miami and back (I live in the Syracuse, NY area for reference) from which their biggest gig was about 150 people in the audience.
  22. Hersheypark removing Storm Runner. What's worse than biting into a cheeseburger only to discover a dead rat made it into the beef patty?
  23. Granted, but they would have enacted a new rule that would close all the rides if it isn't 100% cloudless and between 75 and 85 degrees. And you go on a day where it's partly cloudy and 86 degrees. I wish I could own a shotgun. (BTW I am old enough to own one legally, but parents won't allow any guns in the house.)
  24. ^^Syracuse native, been living here my whole life. As much as we lack coasters, I have no idea what you're talking about. Sure we have our crappy parts, but that exists within every city. If you can get over the piss poor weather, (specifically the clouds and rain; I like the snow and the cold) it's actually quite nice overall.
