Jumboshrmp Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Of course, this is for those who still go to school: I enjoy summer. Sure the climate may be miserable, but I certainly enjoy not having to go to school. However, every year, one thing takes away a lot of that fun. Summer Reading. Normally, I enjoy reading, especially books in the Harry Potter series. However, it seems that all of the books assigned in school are crap. Aren't they supposed to be encouraging reading? I think the best way to do that would be to assign books that I would enjoy. What book (or books, if you have evil teachers) are you required to read this summer? I had a choice between the Hobbit, and some Murder mystery, and I'm reading The Hobbit, since I like fantasy and little elves.
BiCoastal Kid Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I've got to read: Heart of Darkness Wise Blod Othello Pride & Prejudice And then I have to write some essay on them, but Im not sure what the essay is since I havent looked at it.
rcoasters Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I don't quite get why you get readings to do during the vacation ? Are you going to have the same teacher next year or what ? I just can't understand since I never had to do that so an explanation would be nice ! Is it to get some extra points to pass in a class or is it for everybody ?
pvcoasterguy Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Pick three of the following. Read and note, be prepared for quizzes on the books you read on the second day of school. During the first week back, you will apply different types of literary criticism to the novels and write a 4-page analysis over one of the books. The Martian Chronicles, Bradbury Jane Eyre, Bronte My Antonia, Cather A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Kesey Into the Wild, Krakauer Life of Pi, Martel The Chosen, Potok Gilead, Robinson Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Sijie The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck The Joy Luck Club, Tan Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, Tyler The Ponder Hear, Welty
Jumboshrmp Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 Normally, I have to do some sort of essay. Last year, I had to write 3 pages for each chapter on Huckleberry Finn, which should be called Suckleberry Finn, because that book was terrible, not to mention hard to understand. However, it seems that this year I got off lucky. All I have to do is read the book and prepare for a test.
rcoasters Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Ahh, it's too bad for you guys ! I am pretty happy that I never had to do things like that !
coasterguy618 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I have to read The Princess Bride by William Goldman. It is actually pretty good.

Well, I have to do it for AP Lit, which basically means I take a test at the end of the year and get college credit for it(depending on if the college I go to accepts AP credits, and the colleges I'm looking at DO so it's all good.)
pvcoasterguy Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I have to do mine for Honors English. Last year, I had to read four books, but only note them, with no tests. This year, I read three books, do an essay, and take quizzes over the books in addition to noting them. I don't believe that the normal level English courses at our school require summer reading. But, that's the point of an honors course. To go above and beyond normal requirements.

I, surprisingly, don't have any required summer reading this year.
obeygiant Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Well, since I'm going into Pre-AP English, I need to read 3 books. I really can't remember the books though (shows how much I care ) Every year since 5th grade I have been assigned summer reading, but the amazing thing is, I don't read one thing over the summer and I get away with it. I usually just read summaries of the books I need to read the weekend before school starts. I mean, do teachers actually think we are going to read over summer vacation?
Wes Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Last year, I had to write 3 pages for each chapter on Huckleberry Finn, which should be called Suckleberry Finn, because that book was terrible, not to mention hard to understand. Hahahahaha oh god oh god oh god. ...Are you serious?
map2 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I have to read The Princess Bride by William Goldman. It is actually pretty good. lucky you i have to read frankenstien-which is not as intresting as you think, of mice and men, and myths and legends ive read 1 of them so far

Hahahahaha oh god oh god oh god. ...Are you serious? Yes. The dialects used in that book were so hard to interpret.
BiCoastal Kid Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 ^You'll appreciate it more in a couple years. I mean, do teachers actually think we are going to read over summer vacation? If you have my AP teacher, she both expects and requires you to do so or basically you will start the year with a couple very low grades.
sfmmFREAK Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 HA! i didn't sign up for the honors english class, so i don't have to read this summer. SCORE!
Jumboshrmp Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 ^You'll appreciate it more in a couple years. No, seriously. That was the worst book I have ever read.
woah_killa Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 The Scarlet Letter and How to read literature like an english professor or something like that. Also, we have to get 5 articles from a newspaper and write some essay type things on them.
Wes Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 That was the worst book I have ever read. How many books have you read? HF is an excellent novel, especially in the historical context of when it was published. Isn't it usually considered one of the best American novels ever written?
QuakerOaties Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 You guys get to read such great novels! Try to enjoy them. Mark "Just finished Slaughterhouse-Five" Luskus
Wes Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 ^ Slaughterhouse Five is probably my favorite book of all time. Vonnegut kicks all types of ass. Poo-tee-weet?

HF is an excellent novel, especially in the historical context of when it was published. Isn't it usually considered one of the best American novels ever written? Yes, it is. Which is why I can't believe how uninteresting it was. Scarlet letter was pretty bad too. Don't get me wrong, I love reading! I have read many books, and I enjoy most of them. What are some of my favorites? The Harry Potter Series, Holes, The Hatchet, Finding Forrester (it was ok), and the books in the Unfortunate Events series (The plot is terribly sad, but at least they are well written, which I can't say about some other books! )
Swimace Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 The entire incoming freshmen class has to read Truth and Beauty: A Friendship by Ann Patchett. Between freshmen move-in day and the first day of classes, the author is coming to campus to speak about the book and whatnot. The people who I know who have started on it say it's pretty much a "chick book", but I haven't gotten around to starting it since they gave it to us at freshmen orientation.
pvcoasterguy Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 I have a reccomendation for a classic book, if you are looking for one. Anthem, by Ayn Rand It's short (only about 110 pages of actual text- the rest is her manuscript in the edition I got). A truly powerful book with a more powerful message about conformity and the abolishment of the individual. Probably one of the most powerful and moving books I have read, and it's scary how our society is moving closer and closer to this fate.
