DoinItForTheFame
... I didn't lose (or gain) at all in the last month... But the important thing to remember is that you didn't gain any!! That's a good thing. I think it is a testament to how well you are doing that you can make it through all the stress at home, broken sleep, and more and NOT gain any weight! I know a lot of people who would be gaining faster than they can count if they had all those added stresses going on. I hope the new medicine works for you, and allows you to get back to the healthy habits! You got this!
anonymouscactus
I just got back from Wegmans and took Bert's advice and bought a lot of fresh fruit to snack on. Oranges, bananas, and an expensive fruit bowl. I also decided to try some yogurt which I don't normally eat. I find my biggest issue though isn't necessarily that I'm eating bad things (though I do eat bad when we go out to eat) but the quantity of the food I eat. If it's in the house it's always available to me so I want to eat it. That's my biggest issue I need to fix. And though I've got my calorie count down with drinks by 1/2 by drinking iced tea (sweetened) instead of soda (baby steps) I know I really should be drinking more water. boldikus
Drink water, drink water, drink water. Sweet teas are just as bad as soda. I cannot stress how much better you'll feel once you cut sugar out of your diet. Sugar is a drug and people are addicted. I know that sounds dramatic but its the truth. I used to drink soda and sweet teas all the time (those Arizona 99 cent green teas are my ultimate weakness) and always with 2-3 sugars in my coffee every day. I cut it all out at once, went through a very hellish withdraw, and now hate coffee with sugar and now notice how the occasional soda will make me feel. I still have 1-2 cups of coffee a day, but only with a little bit of real creamer (screw that powdered stuff - just look at the ingredients!) do have the occasional soda, like a few times a year, which I think is fine, since I'm not addicted to it anymore which I think a lot of people that ingest a lot of sugar don't realize they are. Until they cut it out of course. You'll be tired and sluggish and hate life for a few weeks but your body slowly starts to realize how to rely on energy from the other stuff you eat and then within 2-4 weeks you'll suddenly notice how NOT tired and sluggish you always are. I'm not an angel and I do have sweets - I love ice cream too much to ever give it up, and I have soft spot for chocolate. I don't believe its bad to treat yourself on occasion - but people dont realize how much sugar they are ingesting. I sure as hell didn't til I made a conscious decision to cut it out, and absolutely noticed a difference in how I felt. Another tip for people that a nutritionist friend gave me a while back and I *try* really hard to stick to and its made a huge difference in what I have in my kitchen: When you go food shopping, stick only to the outside aisles - those are where the fresh food is usually kept - meats, dairy, produce, etc. Things you should eat. Avoiding the middle of the store usually means largely avoiding all the processed crap that is loaded with hidden sugars and who knows what else. Its a small change to your routine that ultimately results in a major lifestyle change.
bert425
^ agreed. I don't use sugar in my coffee either any more, and I drink at least 2 cups a day. I find that flavored creamer makes my coffee sweet enough, that I don't even need to add any sugar substitute. that's great advice on the grocery shopping too, although sometimes buying from pre-processed foods is OK.. but the key for me is looking at the "calories from fat" content. If it's more than 30%, I put it back. luckily, my major weakness - PopTarts -- offer several varieties that are not only fairly low fat (1-2 grams saturated fat), but also are less than 20% calories from Fat. . . . so those make it onto my "treat yourself day" list of things I can eat I weighed myself yesterday morning, and once again, lost nothing this week -- *exactly* the same as last week: 187.8 I know, I know, maintaining is not gaining. . but still a little frustrating, as I continued to exercise every day thru last week I guess my metabolism is just really slowing down now that I've hit 50. we spent the day today at Fiesta, Texas, so didn't get to exercise today. We did do a lot of walking, but not consistently enough to consider it exercise. it was also a "cheat day". . as for lunch I had Bacon-Ranch-footlong with cheese tots (drank water with it tho, so could have been worse), and for the "snack" we get at Six Flags on the dining plan, i had a Johnny Rockets chocolate shake. So yeah, really wansn't that great, but back on healthy eating for dinner - large salad with chicken for protein.

RAWKIN_coaster38
Thought I'd pop in to let you all know that I'm still managing on my New Year's weight loss resolution as well! For me it's not about fitting or not fitting in the coasters. I want to fit into some of my clothing better and feel better about myself. The pictures I took last summer at Disney World made me feel really badly because I noticed visible weight gain. However, I stayed frustrated and depressed about it for the remainder of 2017 without coming up with a solid plan about what to do. I thought a medication change I made around the first of the year would kick-start my metabolism into losing a ton of weight, but nothing really happened and I became more frustrated. Then, I saw this thread where one of you recommended myfitnesspal. I downloaded the app and have kept up with my daily calorie goals almost every day since! (My struggle days include pizza and alcohol nights). I'm so busy/tired that I don't go to the gym as often/ spend as long in the gym as would be ideal, but I have managed to go at least once or twice a week and I've been walking to/from school more often now that the weather has been better. I know it doesn't really count, but my weekend job is very physical so I kinda count that as exercise too. Putting the calorie counts in the app has really helped me realize how high certain foods are. Some foods I thought were relatively healthy actually have a lot of calories, such as the vegetarian pizza I was getting every week. I've finally been losing weight in the last month and I'm feeling more optimistic. I still get really frustrated some days while others aren't so bad. Anyway, I wanted to offer you all a congrats on your weight loss and support that I'm there with you now too!

Monday and wednesday I run two miles, walk for 5 minutes, and sprint for 2 minutes during lunch Friday I run 3.1 miles take a short walk for a couple of minutes then sprint for 2 minutes. As time goes on I will up distance until I get back to a half marathon. I will also be adding an hour workout class on saturday and trying to do 5-6 miles of running on sundays. prozach626
I tried a new "Stonglifts 5x5 app." It's only three days a week of lifting now, instead of five, which is just as effective since I've given up on bulking too much since I have more of a runner's physique. It's an easy way to build strength using full body lifts. It starts you our lifting extremely light. Muscle burns fat. I suggest trying especially for entry level lifters. Careful with the overhead presses. I now only do 18-20 minutes of cardio instead of 30-45 minutes on days I don't do light lifting. I work on higher intensity running as opposed to duration running which in a nut shell forces your body to retain fat for your reserves. I know a lot of distance runners who keep quite a bit of weight. Aside from one cheat meal or two per week, I don't eat bread, refined or artificial sugars, dairy, or processed foods. I avoid gluten. I only eat one piece of fruit per day, because sugar is sugar. I keep my carbs low, probably between 40-60 carbs per day. I eat when I'm hungry and I eat quite a bit, due to the type of food I eat. I use the paleo diet as my foundation, but I'm not 100% strict on it. I don't calorie count and I eat plenty of delicious healthy fats. Don't rely on bad hearsay information, which will be the vast majority of what you will hear. Don't take advice from people who constantly struggle with their weight. I've read a ton of articles on nutrition and a few books as well to get my own real information. The food pyramid is a fucking joke. It promotes obesity, diabetes, and an almost constant cycle of snacking and hunger with the abundance of carbohydrates. Your body builds and addition to carbohydrates and processed foods. Stay away from processed diet products. Pre workouts are very unhealthy and if you eat right there are no reasons to do supplements. One really good multi-vitamin per day is a good idea. Research intermittent fasting which has proven health benefits and fat burning. I only eat 8-10 hours per my typical day and I'm not hungry during the other 14-16 hours. I was obese in my adolescence. Over the past five years my wife and I have made gradual changes where the aforementioned information is completely natural and we put zero thought into it. Severe diets and quick transitions will not be nearly as effective as gradual lifestyle adjustments and not torturing yourself every workout session. Start very slow. This way of living has worked miracles for us, including getting rid of everyday problems like acid reflux, headaches, muscle cramps, fatigue, ache, and mental fog. Break the cycle of constant weight gain and weight loss and eat when you're body tells you it's time to eat, without being confused by constant insulin spikes and variations in your blood sugar. Weight Watchers would go out of business if it was designed to promote permanent lifestyle changes instead of the reliance on return customers. I wish everyone well and I can't emphasize enough the importance of gradual lifestyle change as opposed to crash diets. I have no doubt my wife and I will be able to maintain this lifestyle. Again, I'm not someone who is saying this from lifelong experience of being a fitness douche. I used to have a ton of jelly and a solid b-cup. I hated it. None of the people I socialize with now never believe me when I tell them I used to be obese until I show them the pictures of me in my adolescence. Seriously, I was a dead ringer for Andy Milonakis, but what do I know? It's frustrating to watch friends who are torturing theirselves with crazy formulated crash diets, which always fail in the long run, and no one ever solicits my advice, despite being effortlessly physically fit for quite a while. Effortlessly, as in this is now my normal lifestyle, which I actually really enjoy, since I eased into it until it became normal. I'll never be completely cut, nor do I care to be, but I'm fit and I have decent definition with minimal effort at this point. I wish everyone long healthy lives. bert425
don't agree with your comment that "Sugar is Sugar" absolutely a nutritionist or Doctor will tell someone who is morbidly obese and trying to lose weight to avoid fruit and juices (see it all the time on "My 600lb Life").. but for most people, a piece of fruit is WAY healthier for you than a chocolate bar. my Mother, who was diabetic, was not allowed sugar, but was allowed and encouraged by her doctor, to eat fruit. Her favorite desert was a cake sweetened with Pineapple Juice. so yeah . what works for some, might not work for others. . . but everyone finds their own way of managing their weight. Myself? I cannot/will not give up gluten, and I love my breads/pastas. . but as long as I'm burning off more calories than I'm putting in? I will lose weight, or at least maintain. prozach626
^ I said I eat fruit, man. It's incredibly healthy and loaded with nutrients and vitamins. What I meant is that I don't eat several pieces of fruit per day, because an abundance of natural sugar is still not good for you.
Ape
Had our first cheat meal in a month last night. I went a bit crazy at Mellow Mushroom lol. we had pretzel bites with beer cheese. I had the Italian Sandwich and had a brownie with ice cream for dessert. I felt satisfied and miserable at the same time. I was dreading the weigh in the morning but I am down another two pounds. I am now at 268. At the pace I am on I will be 246 by the time we go to Cedar Point.
prozach626
^pizza cheat meal for the win! Sounds legit. We went to our favorite Mexican joint on Saturday. Chips and Salsa with white cheese dip. For entree it was grilled chicken, onion, green pepper, and tomato on a bed of rice. Healthy, right? Nope. Covered with cheese! No regrets... Anyone else have any good cheat meals, lately? DoinItForTheFame
Just thought I'd pop in for an update!! Well, for some reason I've been in a bit of a funk lately, and can't seem to shake it. We've missed 2 weeks in a row of the gym... and our diet went to hell. But, we are restarting this weekend (would do today but partner is out of town) and I'll try to make it more than the 67 days we made it this previous time. bert425
I've kept up my daily exercise, so good on that front. but after 3 weeks of being at the *exact* same weight (187.8lbs), I've had a tough week staying on track in terms of healthy eating. Nick's Bday was Sunday, so we ended up going out for very heavy Mexican food, as mentioned the other day. Then, of course, there has been Bday cake leftovers (tho been doing pretty good about not eating that). Last night I wasn't in the mood to cook, and was craving Chinese Buffet, badly. And Nick liked the idea, so we did that Granted, a lot of what I ate was Chicken based, so COULD have been worse, tho there was more fried options than I knew I should have gotten. The sodium will mess up my weight, so likely will hold off until Sunday for weigh in this week. Hope everyone else is getting back on track with plans? seems a lot of us struggled in early March
boldikus
Glad to hear everyones still at it, even those that are cheating! (I have too! Meatloaf and mashed potatos Sunday dinner yummmmm) I'm still eating plants, plants and more plants. Still powerwalking the two miles everyday except for last Sunday but I bought a chainsaw and felled the dead tree in my yard (which was a ton of fun, but still very strenuous). Jeans feeling even looser, face looks thinner. Running up the steps from the subway is easier. The shirt I am wearing right now I almost couldn't fit into after Christmas is now loose. Still not stepping on the scale since I just don't want that kind of pressure and because I can plainly see/feel what I am doing is working. Not a diet, just eating well and keeping active. I can't wait til the season starts so I have more of an excuse to be out and on my feet. Keep it up, yall!

boldikus
Are you trying to get into shape in hopes of one day fighting back at Grizzly for what it did to you? More like in just a couple weeks! And I have full intentions of riding it again... just very defensively. I'm just trying to drop some pounds because I'll feel better, and it would be nice to not have to fight to fit into a ride. Back in December during our Florida trip I didn't have too many issues with any rides being a really tight squeeze, but two weeks after that @ HITP I had many layers on and it was a little bit tougher. I still managed on everything, I just don't want it to be an issue at all. Also

RAWKIN_coaster38
I've kept up with my daily calorie goals (minus the day we went out drinking, because I can barely count how many shots/drinks I had let alone the caloric value of each), but haven't seen a loss in a week or so. Haven't gone to the gym in a while, maybe that's why? It is getting frustrating but the same thing happened to me last month and then I suddenly dropped a few pounds in one week. Just gotta stay the course! It's also Spring Break now and I'm taking a trip to Branson, so I'm guessing this will end up being more of a "cheat week," just hopefully not too bad! Alcohol is my typical diet wrecker moreso than fattening foods. Anyone have tips about how to minimize diet wrecking while still being able to drink? I.e. which drinks are typically lower cal? DoinItForTheFame
Well, since it is kind of related... Because it is "health" realted... Today is day number 8 that I have gone without having anything to drink "adult beverage" wise! We use to have 2-4 drinks a night... And now we are down to zero! I must say that I am sure noticing a difference in how I feel! I feel like I am sleeping better. I am waking up more refreshed, and I have more energy throughout the day! I know it's only been 8 days... But this is the longest we have gone without having drinks in almost 10 years? The goal is to rule it out completely. Mainly just for health reasons. I.e. which drinks are typically lower cal? avoid any shots that have Schnapps, or "cream" in the mix. . . unless straight Tequilla or Crown, they are pure sugar. Safest is to avoid shots. as to which drinks are typically lower calorie? anything with Vodka (or Gin).. rule of thumb is that Clear alcohol are lower calorie counts. when used to work in a bar, the go-to for folks trying to watch calories is a Cape Cod (Cranberry juice/Vodka).
