Why are my videos CRAPPY?

Yeah, why are my videos so crappy?

 

I mean they just seem so dark, and when I use slow down 1/2 speed, its just frames!

 

Im ususing Winodows Movie Maker.

I mean, quite honestly, when it comes to video editing software "You get what you pay for."

 

I've used Abobe Premiere, and I've stuck with it for years. I'm sure there are other really good, less expensive options out there, but off hand I'm not experienced enough in those to say what is good and what's not.

 

And remember, you don't make great videos over night. You should see some of the crap I made in '98 and '99. Hell you should see some of the crap I made last week!!!!

I've never used Windows Movie Maker and I have no desire to do so.

 

You might want to start out with some sub-$100 video editing software and then move up as you get more experience. Pinnacle Studio is pretty good for beginners. If you can find rebates for it, you can get the software for cheap.

Yeah, pinnacle is a great software for beginners. I used that for two years then last year upgraded to Vegas Studio 4.0 for $99 which I love...

i used to use Windows Movie Maker and i noticed that it wasnt that great. Then I got Pinnacle and it seemed to work much better. now i am saving up for.....

-new camera

-adobe premier

-external drive

 

so now its either these things or go to Europe.

Oh, so that's what program you use, okay I'm a fan of Adobe's, maybe I'll have to go buy it.

 

Right now, I have Ulead VideoStudio 9... I believe it's the newest video editing software on the market, I love it to death. It is what I used to make the SheiKra video on BGTguide.com

I use Magix Video Deluxe. I have Pinnacle also, Studio 8 to be exact, but I don't like how the program is setup. On Pinnacle you only have one video track, one audio track, a track for title effects, and a track for additional sound effects. I like Magix better because it has 16 tracks that you can put anything on. On Pinnale Studio 8 you can't do much special effect wise. On Magix I can do almost anything. But that's just me.

I also used Adobe Premiere before and it works quite well. Got the job done nicely. I took an 8mm of Batwing for a project I was doing in HS, imported it onto the computer, and at the time Macromedia's Flash (which I LOVE!) didn't allow you to insert videos directly into a project, so Premiere had this sweet option to break down the video I took into a JPEG sequence. It made the file size a LOT smaller and it worked pretty well.

OK, My lappy came w/ WMM, and it's OK, not grat, but OK. It helped me do a film for school, that i'm really pleased with. I just got Avid Express Pro, and it's great. My film teacher said that it was the BEST (There are CRAZY discounts online-mine was like 295 for the whole program), and she is so right.

 

BTW, her dad invented the 32mm camera, crazy, no?

Windows Movie Maker is not great, but it honestly provides all the abilities you need to do a coaster video. The only features I wish it had was picture in picture and the ability to superimpose two or more shots. But other than that, I use it, because I am too cheap to do otherwise! It is JUST FINE for coaster videos.

 

With the video you posted, a lot of what was wrong, IMO, was your shots. They were very rough and not steady, and also lacked a certain balance. A tripod can not hurt at this point.

 

I have only been making coaster videos for about 6 months now, but just a few tips of my own:

 

-Song selection is critical! You need the song to match the feel of the video. For example, if you are going for a fun, lighthearted video, dont do rap, techno, or soft music. Do surf music or ska or something.

 

Heres an actal, tested example...lol. I am currently making a video of Viper, at SFMM (an Arrow ). Everyone knows that it is a bumpy ride, and even with the steady cam, there is considerable shaking. So, I selected a punk-rockish sounding song, with fast beats and hard guitar. I have actually succesfully turned a bumpy pov into a furious feeling pov! As if I purposefully made it bumpy!

 

-Timing in critical! Your shots didn't always line up with changes in the music. And dont change on a bass beat. Cymbals and snares are much better to transition on.

 

-Shots are critical! After you realize what you are making a video of, pick a song to reflect that feeling, and then make sure you shoot the video's shots with that same feeling (not always possible, when on vacation, but still, try). You had a rap song (a very consistant and formulaic music) with shakey and unpredictable shots! With music like that, I sugguest smooth following shots, still tripod shots, and far artistic shots. When doing rock music, I suggest faster shots with more room for shakey shots.

 

 

 

Now, I dont want to sound like I know what I am doing. Because, I dont! Every one is right, in that, it would be benificial to upgrade your software. However, I feel that it wouldn't improve anyones videos by itself. It takes practice and a lot of pre-shoot thinking. A problem with a lot of expensive software, is that it causes the editor to place in a demonstration of, what I would like to call "look what I can do!" syndrome. That is, placing in effects because "they look cool", and not because they contribute to the feel of the movie in any way! Example A? The "liquidy" title on your video. It made the video seem a bit cheesy, no offense ( ).

What about DivX?

 

I mostly mean, comparing my video to the CoasterSims.com vidoes, theirs seem very, crisp, clean, and really clear. Is this because of DivX? If so, how do I put in on/in my video?

I'm not sure about that question. But coaster sims does make really good videos. Which made me thinking that I should redo my Valleyfair! video. So I did, and it turned out alot better. you'll be able to see it soon.

Is ther anyway to put the "Super Stableizer" like on a sony cameras on to mine? (Panasonic) Because I really dont wanna pay $500 for a new camera!
