Photo TR: The Quest For Grover's coaster credits.

Recommended Posts

While I already earned the very first Grover themed coaster at Sesame Place a couple of years ago I still needed to ride his two newest coasters which are located at Busch Gardens Tampa and Williamsburg. I thought it would be cool to go ride them both in the same week (which probably will earn me a Grover FanBoy label but what do I care). This report will include a few other surprises later so keep checking back.

Update One includes: Busch Gardens Tampa with Air Grover and New Coaster construction photos.

Update Two includes: Busch Gardens Williamsburg With Grover's Alpine Express.

Update Three includes: East Coast Bash

Update Four includes: Knoebels with Black Diamond construction

Update Five includes: Hersheypark

Final Update: Dorney Park

Just in case you needed to be reminded who Grover is:

There is Air Grover, the newest roller coaster in Florida.

Here would be all the rules of the ride.

DSCN6021.JPG.12bc2fd514b353edb65a01e1249708f4.JPG

The station is themed to a desert tent.

DSCN6023.JPG.cbf21b030a1903c2efd0ab660a203710.JPG

Yes, the front of the train does have Grover on it.

DSCN6024.JPG.7be7a7cc8f884eade063136aebdf4fa8.JPG

How many trains have you seen that has a huge camel on the back?

Here is a full shot of the coaster doing it's thing.

For you real coaster fanatics.

I wonder where these footprints will take you.

Well sure, it takes you to a place where you can spend more money.

Everyone loves Grover, right?

DSCN6003.JPG.b202f8a649aa24ef4c70674c394cfbf6.JPG

Well, maybe some of you actually prefer Big Bird, but he does not have any coasters named after him.

Even though the paint is only a few years old it looked really bad up until they recently power washed it.

It no longer has the rusted look anymore....well, other than the rails themselves.

I think it is awesome that they brought these back.

East Coast Bash at Kings Dominion.

It simply was an amazing event and yes I really think that Imtimidator 305 is a top ten coaster. Out of the my three visits to the park it was certainly my favorite visit. The park is in MUCH BETTER shape than it was 2 years ago. Plus the two new addtions to the park (Dominator/Intimidator 305) really improved the park's collection of roller coasters. Thanks again Robb and Elissa, as well as the park staff, for the really great event this year.

Has anyone else figured out why there are two handrails on either side?

My guess, and this is the liability claims adjuster in me, they had to come up with a way to keep idiots from climbing the outer railings and possibly falling in.

So, you don't need a child to ride the Grover coaster in Tampa? I know I read that somewhere and thought it was odd that Tampa would do it one way and Williamsburg would do it the other way. Glad to hear that's not the case!

Williamsburg seems to like keeping old coaster stations around, don't they?

DSCN6249.jpg.f36f068c5e6f5aa2c6c741cb13cfdd2e.jpg

Here is some Halloween information for you.

DSCN6250.jpg.2faa6b37b593040aad7c73c4efde4a21.jpg

It has been a long four years since I have been to this park.

DSCN6252.jpg.daeccce3c911b7dd8638944538eaaad0.jpg

The Grand Carousel is really awesome.

DSCN6251.jpg.7c98cdffa36ae01b15ae70c90ff5ea13.jpg

I try to ride the carousel at every park I visit.

DSCN6254.jpg.61be87a6ea88fe9146e2311bd9026f9f.jpg

The Phoenix is still one the absolute best wooden coasters in the world.

DSCN6255.jpg.52399e56de80999d9be999d9bb03f49a.jpg

To experience a stand-up wooden coaster you enter here.

DSCN6257.jpg.e9b50b6712954aec49ce2de60c27a2ca.jpg

It is not very tall or fast, but you get a tremendous amount of airtime.

DSCN6260.jpg.ac43e0d2782db47b6f0fa3a353ad1a2e.jpg

Weeeeee!

DSCN6262.jpg.938fb8577339815a625b6ed6820ba8b9.jpg

We did not forget about you Twister. Twister is much more about laterals than airtime.

DSCN6263.jpg.6e07df8e74e4ee9b59197b38a88eeddc.jpg

Not counting The Phoenix, The Flyers is my favorite ride in the park.

DSCN6264.jpg.5488284dec46dc730887227ff20f260c.jpg

Though they discouraged any kind of "snapping" or "bouncing" during this visit.

DSCN6266.jpg.46ebe7bb7b390b67d2bf4a28c5750001.jpg

But that is ok, since it still is a really fun ride.

DSCN6272.jpg.7a23fa6b737bfbb139f1a3cb1805e4ad.jpg

Let us take a ride on the Sky Ride.

DSCN6270.jpg.1dd3025be07ac0b12d98c806499d1863.jpg

Space Mountain, Knoebels.

DSCN6275.JPG.630892a593584d5e2f442b904a147eb5.JPG

If there is a walkway back down the mountain, how does someone get down from the ride?

DSCN6277.JPG.35576f299015c4edd5a1b8cf15a0eaab.JPG

Oh!

DSCN6278.JPG.ea30302ba54a747d485f7fdecda28ee7.JPG

Almost to the top.

DSCN6279.JPG.4dfab67eee88e7360ee016d393fb7568.JPG

This would be the very top of the Sky Ride.

DSCN6280.JPG.fd3123bd88a407b6627bbdc5b0f9e734.JPG

Time to make our way down the mountain.

DSCN6281.JPG.6b024138f95bf56fea6c9438d8f16091.JPG

Twister.

DSCN6286.JPG.668d614fdb00c4f6fab8e2080b11fef1.JPG

Phoenix.

DSCN6288.JPG.c2836401bb77670602fae1b58eecfb01.JPG

Kozmo's Curves, which is the newest coaster in the park.

DSCN6296.JPG.bb3e36e22ddc59d1962770344337b72f.JPG

High Speed Thrill Coaster finally had to be retired after 50+ years. This would be the replacement.

DSCN6295.JPG.3d03ab38f264fb7d22b5801e65e24dc9.JPG

Yeah, it is not nearly as awesome as the older one, but at least they added something to replace it.

DSCN6294.JPG.c3eb5cfb0e62f0f50455ddc684c5d1e0.JPG

Weeeee!

DSCN6298.JPG.b53085ca4c7d95872b88a814215cacbe.JPG

You can still drive a boat under the coaster.

DSCN6301.JPG.166a9072a775da60c4e918132af7b8dd.JPG

Simply the best I have ever ridden.

DSCN6300.JPG.02f405b2f4570b829f784a06b98281f4.JPG

Well deserved.

DSCN6303.JPG.85ad43ac42b9368d56e0c834558228e2.JPG

These are not your simple bumper cars.

DSCN6304.JPG.f181adc5444ed93ec39d528d25194aba.JPG

These things are fast and hit very hard.

DSCN6312.JPG.4198215ebac15541fdd4af3b65920f42.JPG

Just two weeks after my 2006 visit, the park had a bad flood.

DSCN6313.JPG.576d204a63c41a931bbc2eb8929989e5.JPG

Pretty.

DSCN6315.JPG.377787e9212900b7c66f53e692c54797.JPG

I am embarrssed to say that I have yet to experience The Sky Slide.

DSCN6316.JPG.4870c13baeb00d32c896425837c566f4.JPG

The Sky Slide.

DSCN6318.JPG.fdfc292d7515f85b3a44ed9c4d466246.JPG

No trip is complete without a visit to The Haunted House.

DSCN6319.JPG.b2a2fe702079feb09368d9786ed89c5f.JPG

It does not get much better than this.

DSCN6320.JPG.796bb70b7bd79e706455599a33b1e466.JPG

I spent some time in here.

DSCN6321.JPG.bb657cf4943e4650638eecf9632ee25f.JPG

Yep, wooden horses.

DSCN6322.JPG.f70eeb32f126c0a1ae6e234275536131.JPG

It is not very large, but they do have quite a few in here.

DSCN6323.JPG.642a97660532f4d760ddeeeff6c78824.JPG

Close up!

DSCN6326.JPG.7e8e5eb98643d602c9cf98f8a92154fb.JPG

Here is one from a Derby Racer.

DSCN6328.JPG.464b304af616a20bd99e39f6a8103534.JPG

This would be the new attraction for next year.

DSCN6327.JPG.aa30e4c865098e37c9e342d13c1656a1.JPG

It sits right next door to the Knoebels Museum.

DSCN6329.JPG.0a1d2757286ef3fbb7abfa7c8ece27bd.JPG

The are moving right along with the ride.

DSCN6330.JPG.0d873f9590d296950f3295face8d3bb6.JPG

I think it is going to have a coal mine theme.

Coaster car.

DSCN6333.JPG.17dfbb3bdde9b133e42db21d42e014d2.JPG

I assume that these would be lift hills.

DSCN6334.JPG.3325e7e32a7fa2109779c731d782377d.JPG

Want to check out the museum?

DSCN6335.JPG.94e79793113aae0fe23145e251b6eb2a.JPG

They used to have a Country Bears type show in the park.

DSCN6336.JPG.7e3b5e978f81ebcf46f7df538ae16680.JPG

Not our dino!

DSCN6337.JPG.04cc907687ca753bb15c1bbb1cc78d61.JPG

In finally did the log flume.

DSCN6339.JPG.3c42ed6c4dd7f3a714acd19d6a202e17.JPG

Might as well as ride this a few more time.

DSCN6338.JPG.848354f65c7d50e44a12c3a37d3a1dd3.JPG

It has to be the fastest dispatching coaster on the planet.

DSCN6340.JPG.1a58b9b64f0b523950489eca3b300fb4.JPG

They are still working hard on Flying Turns.

DSCN6345.JPG.4077ae88a270f00408e3b2dc02c317c0.JPG

This explains the delay.

DSCN6341.JPG.d31be1e66f4b76f6670b86a6b39cf2c8.JPG

I really like that picture. Very realistic in terms of the track detail, and having the ride layout on there is cool.

Can you grab the brass ring on Knoebels' carousel? I seem to remember that you could.

This has been a great trip report.

Hersheypark! Part 1

It has also been 4 years since I have been to Hersheypark.

DSCN6394.jpg.5b40d50cf38d5af1c8f3fcd3826f0691.jpg

First things first, I needed a new credit.

DSCN6393.jpg.7425d0d6e40b2e8f55b3fa5a5ddc7dea.jpg

This would be an Intamin house.

I thought the ride was pretty good, but Storm Runner is still king in the park.

DSCN6404.jpg.1746e3a80820bf48257a76cdf98087d4.jpg

The Wild Mouse was my 100th credit back in the day.

DSCN6405.jpg.cacefb5e4c152702aa7238f0ee6ddf9f.jpg

Oh yeah, this now has new trains.

DSCN6407.jpg.05fd2eff3b2ddb886711ec1dade8b1d5.jpg

Wildcat's old trains now run on my #1 coaster, Boulder Dash.

I simply love these trains.

DSCN6482.JPG.7e5f924654958989e75b6450650d29e9.JPG

Other than that terrible jackhammering final helix, the ride ran pretty well.

DSCN6540.JPG.34b36a3959d11292f83206895b3cc6ab.JPG

As you can see, today really was not the best day to take photos. Let us head over to the tower.

While I love Schwarzys, this one is not a favorite.

Oh no! Hersheypark has one of those horrifying Tornado slides, too!

Didn't the monorail used to take guests to a bonafide factory tour?

It did, but Chocolate World ended that and now there's just an unused 2nd station in the parking lot.

I like the new Fahrenheit ride signs they added. A lot better than the big one over the station. I hope to make it out there towards the end of next week.

There is also a unused ramp at the park station to ground level behind the old arena. Does the monorail date back to before they enclosed the park?

Great Hershey TR! Great Bear really is a great ride.

What did you think of the park operations?

Last week was my first time at Hershey, and I was not expecting such slow operations. Almost every coaster stacked trains every cycle. The park wasn't very busy (went on Thursday), but for the size of the crowds, the lines were really bad. Granted, I got all of the credits, so I shouldn't be complaining too much, but I expected more in terms of the employees. For example, Fahrenheit was running 3 trains and stacking the other 2 trains every single cycle (over 1 hour wait). Heck, on most coasters, they wouldn't even open the air gates until the other train finished its circuit. Most employees we encountered were not outgoing and did not look happy. Maybe this isn't standard -- after all, it is the end of the summer. We still had fun at the park, but it wasn't all it could have been.
