Rugged One
All this talk of hops has got me in the mood now. Busted out the Hercules Double IPA from Great Divide Brewing tonight. Wow, this is some good stuff. My taste buds are still taking a beating. And with a pretty strong ABV of 10%, let's just say I'm having a pretty good time right now. Louise
Call me alcohol ignorant...but what was the blue drink!?!? You're not alcohol ignorant, they aren't sold in the US as far as I know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WKD It's an acquired taste, ridiculously sweet. I'm not an alcopop fan but after all the cocktails and shooters it was all I could stomach. I'll buy you one when you're over here. And then drink it when you don't like it. DerekRx
Started off the day with something I was really anticipating, the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. Conclusion: Not very exciting. Its no Storm King or Heresy No taste of hops, no taste of chocolate, no taste of black (whatever that tastes like), just stout Look at me, I'm a beer! DerekRx
Eureka! I've found a way to drink this to make it pretty good! Its like a root beer float, only without the root. Pure dessert goodness Eat an Eskimo Pie, THEN take a sip of the (not so) Black Chocolate Stout Aha! I've discovered the goodness way!

Rugged One
Cram it in while you can Wally. I did the same thing when I was off at Christmas. So today was my first Saturday off of the new year and I didn't want to waste it. What else to do, than drive up to Harrisburg for some Brewery fun. We hadn't been to Troegs since last fall, so we figured we were due for a visit. While we were in the area, we stopped at one of the local beer distributors I like and low and behold, look what I found! A case of Lagunitas IPA. Bonus! It was a little pricey but I've been wanting to try it. All in all, it was another great lunch at the ABC! Next, it was time to dip into this months specialty release. The Zoigl Star Lager. This had a nice reddish color and a fine malt finish. Hoppy Trails IPA. This just went from seasonal to yearly and it deserves it. I very serviceable IPA. Here's a shot of the nice big bar and what's on tap. I think I'll start out with a..... The ABC also has an upstairs Belgium beer bar that I haven't been up in yet. One of these days. I really like the ABC because the place is just massive. It's one of these former abandoned factory buildings that got refurbished into a brewery and restaurant. It just feels like there is some massive kick ass brewing going on in here somewhere. Next stop, the Appalacian Brewing Company, right down the street from Troegs. ....until we said "screw the tour, we've done it a bunch of times before anyway". Just way too many people going on it. After finally being able to breath in the room, we bought some merch, got another sample, and headed out. ....and more crowded..... At this point it started to get more crowded.... A little too light for my tastes but it was refreshing and most importantly, it was a Troegs beer and that means that it was damn good! Next, I tried the enigmatic "Mystery Pils" that they had on tap. Let's give it a try. Kim asks, "Will I get my daily allowance of Vitamin C from this?" They also had on hand their Nugget Nectar, which is an Imperial Amber Ale. It is supposed to be more of a hoppy ale but I found it to be the most citrus tasting beer I've ever had. It actually smelled and tasted like grapefruit juice. The best part of visiting Troegs on a Saturday is of course the free samples in the tap room. First one I tried was this years Oatmeal Stout. Not overly strong for a stout but it had a great taste. We knew it was going to be a packed tour because of how crowded it allready was a full half hour before it was scheduled to start. DerekRx
Someday I'll visit Troeg's Brewery, and I'm sure Tom will be extremely interested in going to ABC just for the Abbey room! Nothing to drink yet today, but last night I went out for a friend's birthday to some club and had a few Labatt's Blue, Screamin' Nazis, Captain Morgans, and Brain Hemorrhages. No pictures, 'cept for a crappy camera phone picture of the birthday girl getting assaulted by the good captain. Poor Gail turns 25, gets poked by the Captain's sword, and then has to drink a whole shaker of Brain Hemorrhage by herself
DerekRx
Started off the day by going out to a bistro with mom for lunch. Turns out it was a good idea, because the place I went had a great selection of beers! I'll be heading back here for happy hours in a few weeks, thats for certain! Surprisingly it was pretty good, with a little bit more hops than most lagers. Good stuff! I got home and decided to try another Brooklyn Brew, this time the Lager There's only 3 things that put a smile like this on my face; sex, coasters, and beer. This time its the beer! Rogue's Dead Guy Ale, probably the best beer I had all weekend

I have some beer updates from this weekend's tastings coming tomorrow. I'm glad everyone enjoyed the pics. I wish we had gone on the tour now so that I could have taken photos of the behind the scenes stuff as well for you all to see. Tried a new Belgium tonight. The Reverend, which is a Quad from Avery Brewing in Colorado. I'm not too much of a Belgium beer fan but I'm trying to get into them more and I have a few in the fridge that I'll hopefully be trying soon. This one was pretty decent. It had a taste of cherries and a nice malty sweetness to it. The wife actually liked this one and helped me finish the bottle. She's more of a wine drinker than I am and not a big fan of the overly hopped up stuff I usually drink. Say your prayers, it's The Reverend from Avery Brewing. Let the sermon begin! Well if it didn't take SOME people 4 months to buy a house, we could have gone to Troeg's several times already! I think I'll have to go up there in early March, before the coaster season starts up again. Maybe we can do an unofficial TPR Beer Thread meet. FlyerACE1
So it's been a crazy few days, closing on our new house on Thursday and then starting the long process of cleaning starting this past Saturday. Of course, the weekend wasn't without some brews so here we go. Again, nothing to write home about here but enjoyable nonetheless. Perhaps slightly better than the White Hawk I think. For me, it was a Snake Dog IPA brewed in Denver, CO. Ellen is exhausted from cleaning but she really is enjoying one of her all time faves! On Sunday, Ellen and I enjoyed our first beers in our new house. Luckily, I hid one Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale away for the winter. Here it is! Gotta say, not bad but not great. A very average IPA that's hoppy but not very complex in taste. I decide on the White Hawk IPA from the Mendocino Brewing Company. Saturday night back at my parents' house, we celebrated with some other new brews. Ellen enjoys a unique Apricot Wheat from Ithaca Beer Company! How about the taste? We have a winner!! Nice taste, heavy on the wheat with some vanilla, clove and a hint of banana notes. Look at the apricot colored greatness. To counter the anticipointment of the Storm King, I did a complete 180 and popped open a promising Ayinger Brau-Weisse from Germany! As you can see from my reaction, I didn't agree. Not a fan of this very dark, coffee in character stout. Perhaps I'm just not fond of the style. First up, Victory Storm King. I had to try this after some good words on here and from Derek and Tom. DerekRx
I came home from work today to find my grandmother had painted my living room for me while I was out. To reward her, I felt it only appropriate to give her some liquor. She prefers wine, so I pulled out something or other that I had. Nothing better after a hectic Monday than chewing on some beer! I stuck with the Alpha King Pale Ale Grandma says "will work for booze!" Some sort of wine, it was on sale, some friends and family drink it
CoasterFanatic
3Floyds is THE pale ale of choice for this BeerFanatic! Adam, if you dig the Apricots and haven't tried it yet, Dogfish's Aprihop is a nice selection.

I would be pretty cool to meet some of you guys on here. Speaking of Troegs, I enjoyed my favorite of theirs tonight. The Dreamweaver Wheat. Dreamweaver Wheat. 4718
Today was my 22nd birthday. How did I celebrate? Well, had the typical special family dinner, bratwurst this year, and some freakin' good carrot cake to go with it. Of course, a couple hours later, I celebrated on my own. 1. Tonight number one was a Young's Double Chocolate Stout. It had a great first sip, and genuinely tasted like cocoa.....but wasn't quite as good by the bottom of the glass. I'd say it's worth trying, but don't think I'll get it again: get's a "okay" from me. 2. Number two was a bit of a curve ball for me, Wyder's Apple Cider. I was kinda weary of getting this because I thought it'd just be a sissy drink, but it was actually VERY good! After the glass of Young's, it went down super smooth, and there was almost no alcohol flavor........just apple-y goodness. Seriously, it's like getting buzzed from Martinelli's, sweet! This one get's a "great" in my book, will definately have to get again because of the super smooth flavor and easy drinkability.
