DerekRx Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Next in line was one of the Mad Mex's nearby. Mexican food and awesome craft beers, 2 things I love so! afterwards, it was time for a Fresnonian Dance Contest with a Mariachi band and everything. And Ted drank something too, because he drinks beer like us, even if he doesn't post it While Heath drove 3.5 hours to have something that is brewed 1 hour from his house, the Stoudt's Winter Ale For me, it was all about Flying Bison, this time the Aviator Red Not too far from Bocktown is one of 3 Mad Mex's in the burgh
DerekRx Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Our final stop for Saturday (woohoo!) was the Sharp Edge Creekhouse, not too far from the Mad Mex (at least I don't remember it being too far). Pretty good assortment of beers, though I prefer their Emporium location better. and finally, to finish the night, some Lindeman's Framboise Look at all the people enjoying Bell's Two Hearted on draft! Janna enjoys some Cherish Kriek, nice and cherryish Great Buffalo bites Pretty good food too and some hoppy mystery beer! More Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald porter Some Anchor Steams and Edmund Fitzgerald Lots of taps to drink from, they're bound to have something for everyone Creekhouse, finally
DerekRx Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Sunday would start us out at another Mad Mex location in Pittsburgh before going back home to watch the Eagles defeat the Giants in the Wildcard game. Of course, we did it with some brews. Nice and citrusy. And that was our weekend. Pittsburgh may never be the same again Halftime, Eagles are winning, the stout growler is gone. Next up, Big Hop! A very good stout, pretty much tastes like a good worn boot, all leathery, smokey, and bitter Then it was back home to watch the Eagles game while enjoying some of the East End growlers we picked up. Black Strap stout first Which was a bit too hoppy still for Kim Followed by his own glass of Hairy Eyeball and some Rogue Morimoto Pilsner for Heath, highly alcoholic Thirsty Dog Hoppus Maximus for me, pretty good In Monroeville is the newest of the Mad Mex's
niiicolaaah Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 ^Derek looks totally possessed in that picture!
mcjaco Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Why do I feel like I'm being mocked in this picture??? Late on Friday, after our little company soiree, we stopped at Coopers. It's a new tiny little bar on the Northside, awesome food and a pretty good selection of brews. I was served a Three Floyds Alpha King in a Bell's pint glass.....I just can't win.
CoasterFanatic Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Here are a couple shots I took of this weekend's Pittsburgh BACT Attack. Noon. Time for a beer. Carribbean Wings sound harmless, but these things that Greg ordered were just brutal. Catrina looks excited to be drinking water all day Sierra Nevada ESB goodness. Zombie Ted approves. Derek demonstrates the proper way to take a self-portrait. I'll give it a try Derek drinking a MCJaco Jealousy Stout HopDerek and the HopDevil Entering the "No Mans Land" of East End Brewing Derek and Heath dig on some Snow Melt Delicious The rest of the BACT enjoys their samples Scott (East End's Owner) filling some growlers Derek shows off his coaster porn Catrina poses in front of the growler fill station Preparing the next batch The cheese and meat tray at Bocktown and Derek on BA. More fine beverages at Mad Mex. I opted for the 2006 Anchor Christmas since I had yet to taste it on draft. A Leffe Blonde at Sharp Edge to close out the night. You can view all the photos at:
Rugged One Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 ^ Nice pics as well Ted of the weekend's festivities. I'm allready looking forward to the next Pittsburgh trip! Tonight I tried a winter ale that Derek was really fond of and I must say, I have to agree with him. The Mendocino Winter Ale 06-07. Wow, this was a rather tasty Oatmeal Stout. Lots of roasty but sweet coffee and chocolate in this one. I just might need to get some more of this!
DerekRx Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 ^Glad you enjoyed it. Tonight for me was a different Winter ale, Geary's Winter Ale, from D.L. Geary brewing up in Portland, Maine. This is another odd winter ale, as it wasn't very malty at all. It was more along the lines of an English IPA; bitter but not citrusy or piney. It was easy to drink, but the taste was just meh. Ahh, now this is what I need to watch the Gators tonight Time to alleviate with some real hops, Stone style Weak in winter, more of an English bitter Its finally winter again, so its time for a "Winter Ale" from Geary's
FlyerACE1 Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Looks like BACT had a truly excellent time in Pittsburgh! Nice to see the 'Borg contingent meeting up as well. I'll have to hit some of these places during the summer when we come out for Kennywood or whatever. Any way, been a while since I posted so here you go... A very solid stout with notes of dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee and caramel. Nice choice! This beer had a great pour! Hope it tastes as good. Time to crack open the Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout.
SharkTums Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 ^Love ya Adam, but it's time to take the Christmas Tree down!
FlyerACE1 Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Last night Mark and Amanda stopped by the house to hang out for a bit and of course drink some beer. Mark also brought a gift of Dogfish Head. Sweet! But, I had a bomber to share and since Ellen isn't the biggest fan of hoppy, bitter beers, Mark was the perfect companion. Mark has a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale while Amanda gets all "Pittsburgh sexy" on us with a water bottle. Damn! This beer is *so* hoppy that it nearly knocked me over. Great stuff! Check out Mark stylin' on our new area rug with a bottle and pint glass of Odyssey. Yes, compliments of Derek, a bottle of Sly Fox Odyssey IPA to share!
FlyerACE1 Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 ^Love ya Adam, but it's time to take the Christmas Tree down! In all fairness, the photo you're referring to was taken last week. But, to completely destroy my defense, the last post of photos was taken last week. So, yes, we still have our tree up. Just been too darn busy drinking beer to be able to take it down. Our house is slated to be de-Christmasfied this Thursday.
niiicolaaah Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 My neighbors have a giant inflated snowman and santa on their front lawn, and they still light it up at night. So don't feel too bad, Adam!
mcjaco Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Don't fret Adam, my Christmas stuff is still up too. Although I don't turn the lights on anymore.
Rugged One Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Glad you liked the Siberian Night Adam. It's one of my favorite Imperial Stouts. BTW, I'm with Matt on this one. It's OK to still have the tree up after Christmas but don't still turn it on! Inspired by our recent trip to Pittsburgh this weekend (where they get better distribution of Lagunitas stuff than we do ie. draft and singles), I decided to break into some of their new to me stuff from a case split I did with Derek last month. The Lagunitas Pils. I'm not a big fan of pils and unfortunately this didn't really change my mind. Nice and crisp but was a little too hoppy in the finish, which threw it off for me. The Censored (Kronik) Copper Ale. Wow, this was really good. Very malty and sweet with lots of caramel, choclolate and fruit notes and a slight hoppiness. Reminded me alot of a stout, only not.
PhishyBrewer Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 WOW! Who would of ever thought? Anheuser-Busch and Czech Brewer Budejovicky Budvar Form Historic Alliance in U.S. MarketJanuary 8, 2007 Czechvar Beer to Gain Access to Anheuser-Busch’s Marketing, Sales Resources and Wholesaler Network After nearly a century of disagreements in certain parts of the world over rights to the Budweiser name for their beers, Anheuser-Busch and Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar have formed a historic alliance in which Anheuser-Busch will become the U.S. importer of Czechvar Premium Czech Lager, the two brewers jointly announced today. The agreement gives Czechvar, currently sold in 30 states, access to Anheuser-Busch’s marketing and sales expertise and wide-reaching U.S. distribution network. It gives Anheuser-Busch another European import as part of an aggressive push into high-end beer categories that has led to alliances with Grolsch, Tiger, Kirin and most recently InBev, which added Stella Artois, Beck’s, Bass Pale Ale and other beers to its import portfolio. The agreement does not impact existing litigation or trademark disputes between the two brewers in other countries, and they have agreed the partnership cannot be used to support either side in any trademark cases. “After years of differences, this is a meaningful step for two great brewers to form a relationship that is good for both of our businesses,” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. “For Anheuser-Busch, it also represents an opportunity to enhance our import portfolio with a super-premium Czech import. Working with our family of wholesalers, we look forward to introducing Czechvar to a new audience of beer lovers.” The imported Czechvar beer will continue to be brewed at the BBNP brewery in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic. “Our business agreement will particularly please all connoisseurs of imported beers in the USA. Experience of many brewers’ generations, who have brewed beer in our town for more than 700 years, lies behind our premium lager,” said BBNP’s CEO, Ji?í Bo?ek. “At the same time, the agreement represents a historical turning point between our companies. We have managed to move away from discussions between lawyers and towards a practical dialogue, which is going to be beneficial to both sides. Our corporation has therefore gained the best importer in the USA,” added Bo?ek. Czechvar is a super-premium light lager. A 90-day maturing period and use of only top quality ingredients, including Saaz hops, assorted Moravian malt barley and pure spring water gives this beer its characteristics. Czechvar features a thick head, distinctly golden color and full aroma. The brand is available in individual 330-milliliter bottles, in six- and 12-packs of 330 milliliter bottles, in a 500-milliliter bottle and on draught. The agreement will broaden Czechvar’s U.S. distribution by giving the Czech brewer access to the Anheuser Busch network of nearly 600 independent wholesalers. The European import is an important addition for Anheuser-Busch wholesalers as imported beer is one of the fastest-growing segments of the U.S. beer industry. The U.S. import segment grew 7% in 2005 and 10% through the third quarter in 2006. The agreement was effective Jan. 5. Terms were not disclosed. BBNP brewery, based in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, has long been one of the most successful Czech companies in the food and drink industry. Thanks to its gradual and goal-oriented expansion into foreign markets and the strengthening of sales on the domestic market, BBNP managed to achieve a significant position in the beer market both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Based on the volume of exported beer, the original Czech premium lager brewed by BBNP is one of the best-selling Czech beers abroad. This beer has earned numerous medals and diplomas from domestic and foreign quality competitions. Today BBNP exports nearly half of its output to more than 50 countries on five continents. For more information, visit www.czechvar.com. Based in St. Louis, Anheuser?Busch is the leading American brewer, holding a 48.8% share of U.S. beer sales. The company brews the world’s largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser?Busch also owns a 50% share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer, and a 27% share in China brewer Tsingtao. Anheuser-Busch ranked No. 1 among beverage companies in FORTUNE Magazine’s Most Admired U.S. and Global Companies lists in 2006. Anheuser?Busch is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and one of the world’s largest recyclers of aluminum cans.
DerekRx Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 ^^Yikes, maybe we're spending too much time together! Tonight I also went with the Lagunitas Censored (The Kronic). A nice dark tasting amber ale that was really sweet with caramel and chocolate, and also had a hint of fruits and a hoppy finish. Pretty tasty stuff. Hooked on Kronic works for me Kinda stouty (like Heath says), but lighter
Rugged One Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 ^ What can I say man, great minds that drink alike, think alike! Tonights selection is one that is very, VERY quickly growing on me. The Rogue Shakespeare Stout. Wow, this is just a fantastic stout. Nice and creamy with roasted coffee and chocolate the whole way through that balances out it's extreme stout hoppiness at 69 IBUs! I could drink this all night.
DerekRx Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Tonight I was thinking about another stout, but this time a stout float. Unfortunately I had no ice cream, so I held off on that idea for now. I did discover that I hadn't tried Tom's selection for the BACT mixed case, so tonight I decided to give that a shot, and make it Belgian night. All that was missing was the Belgian Waffles. I think it tastes even better in the proper glass, even if that glass is chipped (Heath)! Since I was already feeling Belgian, why not break out a Lindeman's Framboise for dessert The taste didn't disappoint The Leffe Blonde, a nice Belgian ale, smells very sweet and Belgiany
thomas2 Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 ^Belgian beers are so good. They are the best
Rugged One Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Back to the winter warmers tonight... And check it out. Kim even joins the thread tonight with some of that ever so tasty Jolly Rancher: The Drink ie. Redbach! I remembered from last year how hoppy this was but forgot just how malty, fruity, and spicey it was as well. Good stuff! This years Pyramid Snowcap.
niiicolaaah Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Nice shirt Kim! Who's the sex kitten now????? Rawr! Mmm, Redbach. ::drools::
DerekRx Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Um, ok, now I'm really scared! Earlier this week I was drinking and thinking like Heath, now tonight I drink and think like Kim! Lots to enjoy on this Thirsty Thursday, just priming myself for another weekend. Not nearly as hot and revealing, but still sexy in my own right and finally, while enjoying Smallville, I think like Kim and go all Redbach Good and creamy, oh so dreamy Finally I give that Guinness a chance to be enjoyed, in float form On the way home I picked up some ice cream, so its now time for my Beer Float Takes me to a place where things are more relaxed, only I'm still in cold PA and didn't get any flyer miles Next to bat, the Green Flash West Coast IPA This is the look of one enjoying the "been on the burner too long" coffee flavoring mixed with lots of watered down blahness first on the list, the last of the Wild Goose variety pack, the Classic Porter
niiicolaaah Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Not nearly as hot and revealing, but still sexy in my own right Yes you is. That Guiness float looks yummy. What am I, the resident beer thread commentator?????
