Double0Kevin
My friend went to a local guys house who collects oddities around the area and opens his house up once a year to visitors to check out his collection for $10 per person. I'm told he donates the money to charity. One cool thing is the old High Roller train from Stratosphere. Check out the photos he sent me.

Mr Stratosphere
Just a heads up, I will try and take photos, but the first observation pod for the High Roller Observation wheel was installed last night and it is currently sitting on top of the wheel. Very Interesting!

For some reason I thought he owned the entire coaster, but it's cool that he was able to snag the train.

jray21
Interesting. I wonder how many more are going to do that now. bert425
http://www.vegastripping.com/news/blog/5173/tropicana-to-undergo-stunning-retail-and-dining-expansion/ Tropicana is getting in on the shopping center game now too... as much as I'll miss the vast openness, of that corner, it's been a long time coming. Trop, in particular, had a LOT of wasted space in front of Casino Entrance, and it was more obvious in that it was right across the street from MGM & NYNY -- both of which come right out to the corner. truth be told tho, we hated the re-do, and preferred the old-school Vegas feel of Trop before all the remodelling. but hey, progress is gonna happen. Jew
I liked the renovation, except for the fact the place now has an identity crisis---they brought it up to "mid tier" levels and tried to charge "mid tier" rates, but at the end of the day it is still the Tropicana and can't ever have a chance of competing with the MGM monopoly on that section of the strip. jray21
Yeah, I've always thought that was a weird property.
Philrad71
But who's not going to miss the Tropicana's 80's Miami Vice style rooms with the mirrors on the ceiling above the bed and various unknown stains all over the carpet??? That's classic Vegas right there, people!
gisco
I remember years ago that there was talk of imploding the hotel and build a new one more out on the strip. Moot point when they did the remodel.
Double0Kevin
So High Roller has nearly all of it's Pods installed now. I'd expect it to be done by next week. Then comes all the testing, tweaking and polishing I'd assume before it opens in early Feb (from what I'm hearing anyways). It's looks great, I can't wait to see it all lit up at night. Also, The Linq is going to start opening locations next week, so hopefully we can get some new interesting shots of the wheel. On a side note, I've heard a rumor that the name "The Quad" is on the way out already. Apparently people just don't get it and it's not tracking well. Apparently they plan to rename it just "The Q." It's simple, but it's not the second hotel in vegas with just a letter designations as we also have "The D" downtown. Only 24 letters to go to have the full alphabet! Mr Stratosphere
Yep! Only two more pods, just drove past the location and they are on the ground awaiting installation. Along with The Quad, I thought that was a terrible name because the number 4 is the most unlucky number in Asian culture.

Along with The Quad, I thought that was a terrible name because the number 4 is the most unlucky number in Asian culture. That's funny on the name. Don't know if it was true or not but years ago the entrance to MGM casino was through the mouth of a lion. That was viewed as superstitious or something like that to some Asian cultures and the entrance was redesigned.
Jew
^That is true. The current lion statue/strip entrance was added in 1998 to replace the old lion entrance. Here's a picture!
jray21
I didn't like the Quad name at all. I also think "Q" is terrible. Probably some guy thinks he's all hip and clever to come up with those names.
Double0Kevin
^ I think "The Q" was just born out of the ease to change the signs rather than re-brand the whole resort. The Quad name from what I understand and was told was born out of an attempt to cater to young people based on the idea that the college crowd always meets at their school's quad. ^^I never realized that the MGM used to be shorter and they added the cap where the hotel name is later. Looks weird.
Mr Stratosphere
Yeah, it looked very odd, and the building used to be lit in a purple light before the emerald green it is today. The cap was added in 1998. My problem with the Quad is the fact that the hotel tower itself looks like Imperial Palace still. I don't understand why that hasn't be taken care of along with the rest of the property. I had friends stay there recently and they said it was terrible. Casino Royale has a Best Western Plus inside of it and that is way nicer than the rooms at the Quad.
Double0Kevin
^ My friend also just stayed there. Their Casino looks fantastic and the Linq will really add something special. But, the parking garage is AWFUL, their small shopping promenade is still really cheap and tacky, and the rooms are nothing special at all. The room really just looks like they put some paint on the walls and called it a day. The door seals around the sliding glass door were falling apart, the bathroom was old feeling and the roof had the popcorn style ceiling. Those towers need a major overhaul before that resort is anything special. They also need to implode that parking structure and start from scratch. Hoppy
^ Probably got the old crappy tower...I forgot the really nice ones where they wanted like $200+ a night just to stay there! I would just say 'screw it' and pay $35 a night across the street, especially because I wasn't going to be in the room much so why drop all that coin?! Ok, I digress...for a special occasion you have to stay at the Venetian. I'm spoiled and only paid $110/night, but it was the room that was amazing, especially the 6ft tub I could lay down in and soak! I flew in on Spirit (never again!) they lost my luggage so the nice receptionist upgraded my room to a nice view on the strip overlooking so many gorgeous people while I waited for my luggage so I could change into something to go out! Jew
But they do have Hash House a Go Go!
Mr Stratosphere
^ This is a bonus, but honestly would rather go to the M and have the Hash House there with an amazing view of the city! I am more interested to see what happens with SLS (The old Sahara) Work is going on at a steady pace there, and construction on the new rooms is progressing nicely. They basically gutted the entire hotel tower and started from scratch.
