thrillgeek Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I have a roller coaster book that shows all the coasters and what parks they are at in the United States. It's called Roller Coasters Enthusiast Color Edition by Mike Schafer and Scott Rutherford. The problem is it's from 1998. I've been trying to find an updated version of this or a book that's similar and cant seem to tell from reviews and info if any books are at all similar. I'm just curious if anyone on here might know what book might be the closest to the book I already have or could recommend any books? Here's a link to the book I already have. http://www.amazon.com/Roller-Coasters-Enthusiast-Color-Schafer/dp/0760305064/ref=pd_sim_b_6
DBru Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 I can't help you out on your question, but I just want to say that I HIGHLY recommend this book. While it is now quite outdated, the pictures are fantastic and the short descriptions of every coaster in the country (at that time) are really neat to read. Definitely pick up a copy if you don't have one already!
robbalvey Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 What's the newest coaster book? It's called "The Internet."
monsterfan99 Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Unless you want books about the history of roller coaster or theme parks you are down to Disney stuff and books for kids.
mightypotato Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 It's called "The Internet." I hear they have the internet on computers now...
thrillgeek Posted January 19, 2010 Author Posted January 19, 2010 Yea yea yea. I guess books are becoming outdated now. Thanks though.
CorkscrewFoley Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 The internet's on computers now? Wow, I'm really far behind now. Tim 'who's still waiting for the book on Anton Schwarzkopf to come out' West.
robbalvey Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Yea yea yea. I guess books are becoming outdated now. Thanks though. Seriously though, I really think one of these books hasn't been printed lately because as soon as the ink hits the paper, it's outdated and all the up-to-date information is online. It's really hard to compete with the Internet on something like a reference book that is already out of date as soon as it hits the store shelves. --Robb
Simon Baynham Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 For 500 park/coaster-related books and films in chronological order of publication: www.rollercoastermedialibrary.com Simon
gisco Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 The problem with roller coaster books is like Robb said, they are outdated by the time they are printed. The only think they are good for is a conversation piece on your coffee table.
coasterbear30 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I have a book called "Roller Coasters: The Thrill Seekers Guide to the Ultimate Scream Machines" and it is pretty awesome. It has a ton of pics and is a nice hardback coffee table book. You should be able to get it at Barnes and Noble for around 13 bucks. I just picked up 3 more copies of it for some friends on a discount rack there for 4 bucks each!
kidcoaster 2 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Well depends on what you are looking for in a book. (History, Coaster, Amusment Park, Trip Planning) But I personally enjoy the Images of America Books I have a pretty goo collection of the books and they are fun to read. But i suggest browsing EBay as you can find some interesting books on there.
larrygator Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 ^^I got 3 copies of that book one year for Christmas. I have since instructed family and friends to never buy me a coaster book ever again.
thrillerman1 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Anyone have a copy of the Werner Stengel book willing to sell? It's out of print and the reprint date keeps getting pushed back further than forever. Edit to add I'm not paying anywhere even close to $1000 bucks for it like it's listed on Amazon in used condition.

When it comes to up-to-date information, an old-fashioned book simply can't compete with the internet. However, if you're looking for a coffee table book about coasters (such as this one, mentioned above, which isn't TOO outdated: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Roller-Coasters/Robert-Coker/e/9780760776155), the internet simply won't cut it. I've got that book sitting on a the coffee table in my living room, and I can't even count the number of times that guests have picked it up and started a coaster conversation with me (such as "Which of these rides have you been on?" or "What's you're favorite coaster in this book?"). Also, it's a great way to have my love of coasters displayed in my home. I mean, honestly, my wife would not be too thrilled if I started hanging up roller coaster posters around the house -Doug
