Kentucky Kingdom (SFKK, KK) Discussion Thread

P. 410: Discovery Meadow details revealed!

Recommended Posts

#kentuckyseven on their facebook page (vii). Wonder what it means?! It seems like an odd time to start hinting at a ride, unless it's something like what they did at holiday world last year for the bug new coaster. Maybe it's something to do with the twins? They did stop operating after the 2007 season so it's been seven seasons they've been down?

I made a quick detour by the park while I was still in Louisville yesterday and saw they were re-fencing part of the front-side of the park. Also the grass finally grew under Lightning run!

Also this made the paper today:

Kentucky Kingdom seeks nearly $4M in rebates

Operators of Kentucky Kingdom amusement park at the Kentucky Exposition Center are seeking state financial incentives valued at up to $3.75 million to defray the cost of around $15 million in improvements they plan to make at the park for the upcoming season.

The amusement park website lists these planned new rides:

•T3, a suspended looping coaster with five "gravity-defying inversions" and that is "sure to make you flip head over heels." It calls T3 "terror to the third power — the next generation of fear."

•Raging Rapids River Ride. A "thrilling whitewater adventure. Come ride the rapids, dodging geysers and evading boulders every inch of the way."

The T3 roller coaster (a refurbished T2) and the Raging River Raft Ride were mothballed by the previous park operator.

•Cyclos, "the ultimate summertime twist. A huge swinging, rotating pendulum that loops 360 degrees in the air."

•Skycatcher. "See Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay like you've never seen them before – swinging 130 feet above the park."

•Enterprise. Described as a ride that "will surely turn your world inside out and upside down."

The Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority has scheduled a meeting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Capital Plaza Tower, 500 Mero St. in Frankfort, to give preliminary consideration to the Kentucky Kingdom application for the financial aid.

Gil Lawson, spokesman for the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, said the park operators, headed by businessman Ed Hart, seek the maximum 25 percent recovery of their planned $15 million investment in park upgrades.

If finally approved, the amusement park operators could reclaim up to $3.75 million over 10 years, in the form of a rebate of state sales tax generated by the improvements.

Lawson said that the authority's final consideration will come after a consultant study that must demonstrate that the project meets all the eligibility requirements set by state law.

Lawson said that, in addition to the new rides, the park operators plan to invest in building renovation and some new construction.

Kentucky Kingdom spokesman John Mulcahy said the park plans a job fair, probably in early February, to begin the process to hire about 800 seasonal workers this summer. The park is to be open weekends starting April 25 and then daily starting Memorial Day weekend.

Kentucky Kingdom reopened this past year after a five-year hiatus, following its abandonment by the Six Flags organization. The Hart-led group stepped in to reopen the park.

Last year Kentucky Kingdom attracted nearly 600,000 visitors and sold 117,000 season passes — a showing that pleased the park operators, Mayor Greg Fischer and the landlord, the Kentucky State Fair Board.

The operators spent more than $40 million preparing the park for its reopening.

It was on the News live a updated article hasn't been released yet. It was part of the proposal to Frankfort from Kentucky Kingdom to get 4 million in rebate. It said There will be 7 new rides for the 2015 season. Also spoke of new concession stands being built near T3 one of them called "Taco Tequila".

As of this coming season, I'd say the Twins are the last SBNO rides. There's also the Top Eliminator Dragsters, but for some reason I don't see those ever reopening. I could see the land being used for other things.

Bluebeard's Bounty is kind of in a dead end, and a lot of land was cleared near it when Lightning Run was built. The land seems like a good place for a small coaster. I've already mentioned a Maurer spinner as something I could see being a hit here, and that space looks like it would accommodate it easily.

I can't really picture a Larson loop at this park...especially since the refurbished Enterprise will also be reopening. I understand they are different rides entirely, but they both loop riders continuously.

Wouldn't be surprised if they got a couple more rides off of Larson's catalog. They seem to have the perfect system in place to build rides cheaply and quickly and get them out to parks in short notice. Either that or they got a good deal on some used rides from a broker that they plan on refurbishing.

They already had a whopping 5 new rides coming for 2015 though, why add another two more? Surely it makes more sense to space things out better to get more marketing bang-for-their-buck, but perhaps they really think they need the capacity right now.

I would bet the'yre adding some more new rides to the area around T3 to get more people over there. They mentioned a new restaurant called Taco Tequila thats going over there, so I bet a ride or two will make it as well, hopefully filling that ugly hole from the top eliminator dragsters. As for what rides they are... I hope they add some simple, fun carnival type flat rides. A tilt-a-whirl or a scrambler would be great. A zipper would be amazing since its my favorite all time flat ride! Cant believe they are pulling all this off. Its amazing what you can do with taxpayer backing haha.

EDIT: Also Zamperla also makes some WILD flats, and since they are buying something from them anyway....

I would love to see a Zamperla Air Race at KK. After riding at IAAPA a couple years ago, it has become one of my favorite flat rides. The park needs a lot of these smaller thrill rides to fill the gaps between their major attractions and entice "dry park only" visitors to stay longer than 3-4 hours.
