Gutterflower Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Hey all Im just wondering what peoples thoughts are on American Airlines? Im flying Heathrow to LAX in the summer and American Airlines is currently around £70 cheaper that Virgin Atlantic. (£335 and £405 respectively) I've heard bad things about AA's long haul service when compared to Virgin and BA. I've flown Virgin Atlantic to Florida before and thought the service was excellent but the £70 is tempting. Anyone here had good exepriences with AA?
hyyyper Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I have flown 3 times with AA, I had nothing to complain about, and the food was better than Delta.
mcjaco Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I fly American all the time for business. They're no worse than any other airline. They're no better either. Go for the cheaper fare, it's more money you can spend on the actual trip.
gerd.muller Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 i´ve flown AA several times from FRA to MIA. they´ve the lowest fares, a friendly service and like hyyyper said before, the food is much better than the one served @ delta or united. one more importend thing is: the economy is more spacious than many other airlines. that´s a big bonus if you´re a tall person like me (1,95m = 6.4 ft).
Ed Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I flew Heathrow to LAX and had no problem with them at all. Just don't get put into the middle of the 5 seats!! That was possibly the most uncomfortable thing ever.
Cameron Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I don't mind American Airlines, it's United I have sworn off forever. I think the real truth is that all the big US airlines are equally bad, it's just that people will hate whichever company wronged them first.. (In my case that is definitely United). Cameron.
Carnage Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 the food is much better than the one served @ delta or united. I don't know, the $8 snack box I had to buy was crap. But I've only flown AA on shorter flights. Long haul inter-continental would probably have better food.

Long haul inter-continental would probably have better food. you get free food and drinks (even alcoholic) on longh haul inter-continental flights. it probably even depends on from where you depart. in munich or frankfurt/main for example, most of the airlines are catered by "lufthansa sky chefs" especially the star-alliance members.
supertrooper Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 ^American carriers no longer offer free alcohol on international flights. Northwest is the last American carrier to offer it, but they won't after Feb. 1.
packfanlv Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 ^This is true. I flew American from Tokyo to Los Angeles in September and while they served two meals, no alcohol was included.

Northwest is the last American carrier to offer it, but they won't after Feb. 1. sorry, my fault. my last flights to the usa was with lufthansa or air france. but anyway, AA isn´t really that bad on long-distance flights!
SharkTums Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 One of the other problems with American and the other US Carriers is that even on their longhaul flights you're not guaranteed to get an in seat video entertainment system. Almost all of the international carriers offer this, but they're still in the process of redoing all the planes in the US. We've been on quite a few VERY long flights with no personal entertainment system, it's annoying!
packfanlv Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 ^That is a great point. When we flew from Tokyo to LA on American, we did have video entertainment, but instead of doing the On Demand type in coach, you could only start the movies every 15 minutes and the pause feature was disabled. (This was a brand new system capable of On Demand) On international carriers, at least on the ones I flew with the new systems, everything was fully on demand for every passenger. IMO this is just another way that they nickel and dime everyone and is very short sighted.
holidayworld08 Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 ^^Remember ATA Airlines? I flew on them once to Hawaii. Three words: Worst airline ever! It was worse than my former least favorite, united. No Video entertainment on the longest flight i've ever been on. And the stewardess was a little witch. She talked about me like I wasn't in the room. She said, " I can't believe he wants another soda, he really doesn't need another, I feel so overworked!" Ugh! But, luckily that airline is gone for good!
Gutterflower Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 Hey guys Cheers for the input. I think i may go for the AA flight (its up to the 2 other guys i fly with). A lack of an entertainment system would be quite annoying. but it sounds like its a hit and miss. I've always heard the american airlines are generally worse on atlantic flights than the european ones such as KLM, BA and Virgin. The review sites ive seen generally seem to agree. but from what you guys say it does sound it might not be that bad.
TheHulk Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 If you want to fly with American, I'd say now is the time to buy tickets. The local news just said they lowered their air fair rates to keep up with competition. I believe they said it wouldn't stay like this for long though.
Crazy_Behemoth_Lady_Jess Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 several years ago I flew AA to Dallas for my cousin's wedding. Service wasn't the best, attendants were pesky. I got yelled at by an attendant just for going to the washroom during turbulance... But i really needed to go! I'm not happy with their service...
ebl Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I've only flown American a couple of times, and I really don't have any complaints about them. JetBlue is nice, though, but their destinations are limited. Eric
Swimace Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I've flown across the Atlantic on both American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic, and I have to say that Virgin is SOOO much better. As a cheap college student, I cut corners wherever I can so I'd take the American Airlines flight, just realize if you book that flight that you're not going to be as comfortable as you will be on the Virgin flight.
