Now lets see a Guitar Hero: Slipknot with an Expert+ mode!

Are you kidding me?!?! No one, and I mean no one would be able to beat the first song. The only person who could 5-Star any song would be Joey Jordison himself. I'd love to play the guitar cause Mick and James make it fun to play, but Joey makes it torcher. It would be just as bad if they made a Guitar Hero: DragonForce.

Guitar Hero: Metallica Hands-on

Get ready to Ride the Lightning.

by Chris Roper

January 26, 2009 - Right from the moment the first Guitar Hero was announced, fans have been clamoring for Metallica tracks to hit the series. Their dream came true with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and the inclusion of "One", while last year's follow-up of Guitar Hero World Tour brought a couple more tracks. But that's nothing as Guitar Hero: Metallica is prepared to bring the thunder in a big way.

Similar to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith in design, the game is focused around Metallica's music, style and so forth, and also includes bands that influenced and were influenced by the metal legends. However, the comparison can only be made on a surface level as the Metallica title looks to offer a ton more content and goodies for fans of the band, such as myself.

The most important bit of course is the track list, which will include some 28 songs from Metallica (including staples like "Creeping Death", "Battery", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and "Master of Puppets") while more than 20 other bands are set to contribute tunes as well, including Slayer, System of a Down, Mastodon and Motorhead. The track list is most certainly very impressive and does a good job spanning the band's career. Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are especially showcased nicely here, which is great news.

One important bit to note here is that if you happen to have already purchased the Death Magnetic DLC for Guitar Hero III and World Tour, it will carry over into GH Metallica. If you haven't bought it, PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will find "All Nightmare Long" from the album included on the game's disc, while Wii and PS2 gamers will also get "Broken Beat & Scarred", "Cyanide" and "My Apocalypse" included with the game as said versions don't support downloadable content.

The band itself is represented quite well in the game. There's still that sort of exaggerated look to the guys like we've seen in the other titles, but they look pretty close to the real members and are easily recognizable even out of context. The most impressive bit by far though is the animation sequences that Neversoft has been able to translate from the mo-cap sessions into the game. Everyone's movements are dead-on, especially Lars' signature head movements. Great stuff here.

For the most part, the gameplay formula remains the same as what we saw in World Tour, though there have been a couple cool tweaks and additions. The Expert+ drum option will make use of a separate kick pedal (which can be bought separately or picked up for free as part of a pre-order deal) and will add back in the double bass notes that would normally have been removed for a single kick pedal. I saw "Dyer's Eve' demoed for this and the only applicable description is "holy @#$%". Imagine a regular allotment of cymbal and snare notes slathered with as many bass drum lines as can possibly fit on the screen, essentially creating a solid block of gray, and you have an idea of what I'm talking about.

Another new mode being added to the game is called Drum Over which lets you to play a track without any drum notes, allowing you to play whatever you want without penalty. The drum samples are based on the drums for each individual song, so if you can manage to play along correctly, it should theoretically sound just like the album. Or, you could go crazy and try to mix up John Bonham's solo in Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" over top of "The Unforgiven" and see what happens.

The progression has changed a bit since World Tour, and is actually more in line with the original Guitar Hero titles. Instead of playing gigs, you now work down a grouped list of songs like in the first few titles. However, you no longer need to complete every song to move on. Each venue has a star requirement, and once you've earned said number of stars, that venue and its attached songs are unlocked. However, if you just want to jump in and rock out, you'll find that the Quickplay option starts with every song unlocked this time around.

Back up at the beginning of this article I mentioned that Neversoft has offered a ton of goodies for the fans. Every song in the game will have a handful of bonuses attached to them, with one of the biggest being Metallifacts. Here, you watch the song played in the game (you can't play in this mode) while facts about the band, song and anything else associated with the track pop up on the screen. If you're thinking this sounds like VH1's Pop-Up Video, then you already know exactly what the expect.

In addition to this, all of the Metallica tracks in the game will include some sort of video component. This ranges from well-produced stuff down to handycam footage shot by some fans in a 200-person club with the band playing cranked up to 11. Very cool stuff. You'll also find tons of images, lyric sheets, posters, gig notes and pretty much anything else you can think of. If it can be scanned or photographed, you'll probably find some form of it here. Of course, you'll also find behind-the-scenes footage and other making-of stuff tossed into the mix. In other words, it doesn't look like we'll be running into a shortage of content with this one.

With Guitar Hero: Metallica, it looks like Neversoft has figured out how to focus the Guitar Hero franchise around a single band (and some supporting groups, of course) while appeasing both fans of the franchise and the band. The game is set to ship in just a couple months, so get your ear plugs ready.

^ I'm so excited about GH:Metallica It's going to be brilliant!

It would be just as bad if they made a Guitar Hero: DragonForce.
I wouldn't buy that game, now don't get me wrong I think Dragonforce are great, but I just don't think there is a big enough market for them to put that game into production. It'd be too insane, and you'd have to be either really sad or just damn lucky to be able to play it...

Double bass is the most epicly stupid drumming item ever created. Back in the day, I could kick out 16th notes on one foot.

I'd rather see them expand the drums to include a hit hat, then use the other pads for crash and ride.

At a tempo of 200 BPM? (That would be 800 notes per minute for non-drumming nerds) Seriously, I'm all for using one pedal when you can, (or when you're playing blast beats) but at higher tempos you cant kick that fast with one foot unless you're George Kollias, Derek Roddy, or Hellhammer. Plus playing double bass is just plain fun!

Also, I agree for the drum expansion, but it probably won't happen because most people don't know the difference between a Hi Hat, Crash, and Ride cymbal.

LMAO. At least no one is asking for a Guitar Hero: Nile, or Guitar Hero; Dimmu Borgir. THAT would be torture. DB's drummer (Hellhammer) does 16th notes at 292 BPM (1,168 (!!!) notes per minute) on "The Chosen Legacy" and Nile's (George Kollias) does 16ths at 256 BPM (1,024 [yes, these values ARE correct!] notes per minute) on "Cast Down the Heretic"

How many songs are at 200 BPM?????

The whole idea of the double bass just makes me giggle. For a drum that's really supposed to lay down a beat, and accent the bass line, why do you need thunderous rapid fire bass drum beats?

Yes, it's cool, but in the pantheon of awesome drummers, how many of them relied on the double bass?

Well, Matt, we both know that we have COMPLETELY different music tastes. I listen to a lot of Death, Speed, Power, and Black metal where songs DO go into higher tempos. Now I'm not saying single bass is lame or anything, because it is in no way lame. Some bands use it, most don't. I, personally, like the way it sounds.

^Guitar Hero ABBA! Now that would be epic, and you could have Meryl Sreep be a playable character!!! But they would mix it with DDR so you have to play/sing and dance at the same time! But they would make a dancing solo on Dancing Queen that no one could beat.

^ I just went straight to medium drums, Easy is really boring. It's just alternating between red and yellow. Going to try hard soon

I took GH:WT to my friends house so we could play together because personally I think games like these have to be played with more than one person. That's why I bought the full kit. But we played for a while and when he took the guitar off he got the strap caught on his ear ring and ripped his ear It was pretty funny though If anyone's interested in playing Wt with me on 360 PM me and i'll give you my xbox details

I can't wait for GH:Metallica! Expert+ sounds like a lot of fun, and I'm quite excited to start trying out a double bass!

For the record, my Rock Band 2 drumset has four pads, three cymbals, and two foot pedals (one for now, one set aside for GH:M). It's the closest I'll ever get to a real drumset, so it's good enough for me!

Anyone else get Guitar hero Metallica? I just got it on Saturday and all I can say is its awesome. They could have done better with the set list because the hardest song i on expert I beat in one try, and they should have had them look like they did in the 80's not how they look now, and then my biggest complaint was that when James should be playing guitar hes moving his hands all around and when he should be playing!

Being that I love heavy metal, Guitar Hero Metallica was my favorite music game so far; and Guitar Hero Smash Hits looks like it might be a must-buy as well. Although Ive heard rumors that Rust in Peace by Megadeth is going to be DLC for Rock Band, which is just pure win in my book.

Anyone want a copy of GH:WT? $20, haha.

Seriously though, I picked it up at Circuit City when it was $25. To me, it wasn't even worth that. I thought the Tool songs were going to be fun, but on Guitar and Bass they're EXTREMELY repetitive. Assassin is the only song I really play on it. I will admit the charting of the songs has gotten a lot better since GH:3

The DLC (Downloadable Content) that has released for GH:WT hasn't caught my interest except for 3 songs so far.

GH:WT has been releasing DLC for about 31 weeks now, and there are only 3 songs that I would *Want* to download.

Rock Band, in it's first 31 weeks, I've bought 86 of the songs released for download. Including two Full Albums (Pixies - Doolittle and The Cars - The Cars)

Rock Band just has a lot more songs that I really want and enjoy playing. Big surprise for me this past week with Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" becoming DLC.

Here's a list of Rock Band's DLC: Rock Band DLC

Here's Guitar Hero's: GH:WT DLC
